Lush , wheat whs wanted yesterday by
all classes, of buyers, . and at Minneapolis
particularly by millers.' The manipulation
In May and July In that market in driving
tho trade . into September. Wheat stocks
have leor(Hcd at Mlnenapolls two.uoo btisn-
la In five days. A special to Sunderland St
Lpdike. says- that, the Texan mills are
paying tl.iotfl 16. 'lor wheat and the ter
ritory is , practically bare of old wheat.
A Chloaga. bull la thus quoted, lir today's
Inter Ui-ean: "There, la practically no evi
dence going to show that much new wheat
can pass country miller In July to fill any
sales trr this market at much under $1 per
bushel,-1 The old crop trill naturally be all
consumed before theii and practically none
of it left for millers to mix with new
wheat. September wheat Is at ill an un
born supply and prices will bo theoretical
fur sonic time to come. It in true, It Is
on an export basis, but that basis is sub
ject to many export contradictions."
The Northwestern Miller says: "There
was a decrease of 7.500 barrels in the flour
output last week. The quantity turned out
was 161.840 barrels, against 217,773 Isst year.
There was not much to vary the monotony
of a dull flour market last week. There
were somewhat Increased demands for
flour. About all the export business done
was limited sales of clears to London ami
Holland."
The condition of the May corn deal la
summed tip by the" Record-Herald today lh
the following manner: "Wet weather In
the corn belt during the last three weeks
has turned tin apparently hopeless May
- corn deal Into an Impregnable one, and In
addition has put the soil in condition to
give the, rmw crop a tine start, provided
warm and fair weather follows soon. Only
' twelve more business days of the present
' month remain, and It Is hardly probable
that conditions will change sufficiently ta
' Impair the position of the present holders'
In view of the profits that have already ac
crued from the widening: of differences on
tho trades recently closed and on the corn

CHICAOO. May 18.-Whet for July de
livery, sold today at 8c, an advance of
8c from the) lowest poult of the day. Nu
merous crop damage reports from the
southwest were apimrently responsible for
the sharp upturn. The market closed prac
tically at the highest point of the session,
with a net advance of precisely 3c. July
corn Is up S'ac. (juts show a gain of Sc.
I'rovlslons are unchanged to 10c higher.
The unusual strength In the wheat mar
ket developed late in the session. At the
opening sentiment was decidedly bearish.
Initial quotations on July were off 7c
to 'Jic at HtWisSHc. The main depressing
Influence early was Improved wesk condi
tions throughout the In I ted States, espe
cially In the spring wheat territory. An
additional factor was a severe decline at
Liverpool. I'll traders were active sellers
during the first part of the day. Commis
sion houses, however, bought In sufficient
quantities to hold prices at about the open
ing level. Damage reports from the south
west began later In the day to flood the pit
with a surplus of buying orders. Demand
became general during tho last hour, senti
ment In the pit. growing exceedingly .bull
ish. I'rlccg advanced rapidly. Just before
the close July sold at 89c. a clean gain of
3c -compared with the lowest figures of
the, flsy. The market finished almost at
the top. final quotations on July being at
89fi 89c. Clearances of wheat and flour
were equsl to 72,8tjo hu. Primary receipts
were 151,900 bu., compared with 112,900 bu. a
5-er ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago
reported receipts of 101 cars, against lis
cars last week and 64 cars a year ago.
Strength of wheat had a bullish effect on
the corn market, causing a strong finish.
Karlv In the session sentiment was rather
bearish. Influenced by Improved weather
conditions throughout the corn belt. Ixiwer
prices at Liverpool In anticipation of In
creased shipments from Argentina also had
a weakening Influence. With the advance
In wheat shorts became fairly active bid
ders, resulting In a firm tone. The volume
of business was rather small. May opened
'?ilc lower at 62'a53c, sold up to 64c and
closed at the top. July opened He lower at
48e. sold between 48c and 4c and closed
at 487k'&4!c. Iocal receipts were 85 cars,
with 7 of contract grade.
Predictions of clear weather created some
easiness In the oats pit early In the ses
sion On the advance in the price of other
grain the market became strong. July
opened unchanged to Vc lower at 21VS2tic,
sold up to 304(0 and closed at the top.
Local receipts were 89 cars.
Owing to light offerings a Arm tone pre
vailed in the Drovisions market. A small
advance In the price of live hogs stimulated
a moderate demand. At the close July pork
was up 10c at 112.75. Lard was unchanged
at $7.37. Ribs were a shade higher at
17 27HOT.30.
Kstlmated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat,
4 cars: corn, 86 cars; oats, 151 cars; hogs,
20.000 head.

NEW YORK, May 18 Loss of confidence
In values showed a notable growth during
the progress of today's trading In stocka
and a movement of great animation to
liquidate was the consequence. Professional
traders were very persistent and diligent
on the short side of the market. There

CATTLE There was another good run of
cattle here today, about 3,4ts) nead being
on sale. This makes for tne weeg about.
16,00u head received. The stuff all arrived
early and the market opened tn good sea
son. Tne general quality of the receipts
was fairly good.
There was a weakness snewn in tne traue
on beef steers this morning and there waa
no urgency to the demand, w nne tne re
ceipts of this class of cattle was fairly
liberal and included . some good stuff, tne
demand was weak and buyers did not seem
anxious for supplies. Even the good kinds
were slighted and just about steady prices
was all mat could be obtained even on the
very best kinds, Common and poorer
araries were in verv Door demand and sold
t prices rigm around a aime lower, irau-
ing was very Blow ana urasjgy ana very
little was done tin wen aiuns in ma lure-

The cow and heifer market showed a
little more strength than did the steers
especially on the good kinds and the mar-

with a little firmer tone than there was on
beef rattle. Common and coarse kinds
were weak to a dime lower, but there wa
more life to the trade and the cattle
changed hands quicker than they did In the
beef steer division.
The market on veal, calves, stags and
bulls remained In about the same condition
as it has been tor several uays, annougn
today it suffered some irom the weakness
hnwswin otner aivisions.
There were only a very few stockers and
feeders offered this morning and the quality
was only fair. Most of the receipts in tnis
class were heavy cattle, something the
soeculators did not have much use for and
ma a result, trading was slow, although the
stuff was all bought up at Just about steady
prices. Kepreseniauve saies:

as heavy as they have been the previous
three days of the week, about fifteen cars

in conditions here and the market is In
about the same shape as it was yesterday
Buyers were out early and the market
opened In good season. There seemed to
be a little better demand tor sneep than
for lambs, as the buyers picked up the old
stuff In good season, while the trade on
lambs was a Uttle slow. As has been the
case all Week,'- buyers wanted good stuff,
but common kinds were not In much de
