The unloading by Valentine or 1,500,000 biiHhola of wheal on the Chicago market caused a lowering of prices here today, lhe only thing that kept wheat from going lower u the belief that Valentine wa buying it up again through brokers. Considerable buying through brokers In the last few days has been attributed to Valentine, although ha had been known to sell seevral times. The linuldation of long wheat had a "ecldedly depressing effect on traders in general, as It had been believed that trie bull leader who sold today was accumu lating a big line of July preparatory to a possible "eiineeie" in that option. Outside of the trading mentioned business was of comparatively small volume owing to a de. sire on the part of many traders to await tne government crop report, t ables were steady and wet weather was in evidence throughout the greater part of the Lnltea States. At the opening July was c lower to . higher at IWuMc. Mav 10. rrlees reversed the movement of yesterday and sagged In a neavy maraet. ins only aigmncancn which can be attached to the movement was the almost total abstention from the dealings of any real holders of stocks or Hny real seekers for stocks. Tho Inability of the room traders to get prices far away irom a given level la the uuiaiitng sign or the quiescence of all substantial Interests In the market whose operations form the basis for the only successful campaign by the purely professional element. Liquida tion seems to be completed and the supply of stocks In the market Is exceedingly small. It Is easy, therefore, when the trat- Ing element takes the long side to get prlcea un as far as that element dares to carry the movement. On the other hand. any errort to market stocks even 01 a meager amount finds practically no demand and prices consequent! v run off easily. There results the wavering, uncertain tune from day to day which now distinguishes tne market. Aside from the technical evidences of the purely professional character of the' trade the shrinkage In the volume of the dealings Is clear evidence of the languid Interest now shown In stocks. On the Friday before lust Christmas there was a total of only 289 000 shares dealt In on the Stock exchange owing to the three davs holiday to follow and the seasonable absence from Wall street. With that exception It Is necessary to go pack to tne period ot summer nun ness in last August to find a parallel for to day's small business In stocks. The Initia tive came from London again, where the outcome of the settlement is awaited with some renewed apprehension, which was shown by the renewal of light liquidation tnere or American securities. In the cur rent discussion about the Stock exchange most stress was laid on the revived discus sion by the president and secretary of war or the railroad rate legislation measures. Indicating tho unchanged importance at tached to this question by the administra tlon. An impression had heen hunt up amongst Stock exchange manipulators that tne course ot tne Hearing on this subject by the committee of the 1'nlted States senate had served to lessen the probability of Its being pushed as an Issue with the ag gressiveness Indicated at one time. The tone or public addresses by the president ana a. leading member of his administra tlon served to shake the assurance felt on this point. Money was extremely easy, but sterling exenange waa strong and the question was again canvassed whether the small demand In the local money market would not per mit an outgo of gold. Paris has relaxed Its demand for that metal, however, and ar rivals In London are going Into the Bank or r.ngland. The special show of strength In Smelting was due to the report of tho financial results accomplished in connection wun the organization or Its new suhsldlary company. A few other metal stocks showed sympathy. Heading was helped by the ports from the anthracite trade. There were some recoveries from the extreme do ellne which were not wide In themselves, but the closing waa easy Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value. 11.875.000. The better grades of beef ateers could be quoted Juri about steady. Aa high as $6 waa paid for pretty good cattle. Good handy weights seemed to be In fairly good demand, with prices steady, but whtn it came to the common to medium kinds of cattle the market was slow with a. good many sales, a trifle lower than the same kinds brought yesterday. Packers did not seem to care whether tney got any of that kind ot cattle or not, so that It waa rather late before a complete clearance waa made. The market on cowa and heifers did not show a great deal of change from yester day. At the opening of the market some sales wero made that looked quite a little lower, but after the llrst round the de strable grades sold without much trouble at Just about the same prices that were paid yetserday. The common and medium kinds were dull with the feeling weak. A a-ood nviny salesmen. In fact, called any thing but the best cows and heifers a little lower all nay. Bulls, veal calves and stags sold in very much the same notches they did yester day. Trading waa not active, particularly on tne commoner graaes, dui mosi every thing sold In fairly good season. There were very few stockers and feeders Included In the orrertngs tins morning, and aa a good many of the speculators wero looking: for fresh supplies tne market could safely be quoted ateady on anything at all desirable.
