During the (trailer port of the day sentiment was Inclined the other wav. The tone at the opening was about steady, July oelng 4c lower to c hlKher at M'fcc. to H4'c. Tuere waa some KUllltiK on the improve. I diplomatic situa tion In Europe, but offering were readily taken hy shorts. A prominent tradee waa a lllieral purchaser of July. After that month liHd touched ft:ie tne price grad ually crept upward. Reports of cool weather prevailing In many sections of the l ulled States began to have an effect. A report by a Chicago crop expert made some rather unfavorable, comments on the oullook for fall sown wheat. According to the report the growth has been checked hy low temperatures and Instead or nemg further advanced than usual this aeastm of the year the crop Is now somewhat be hind hand. The best prices ol tne. ses sion were made as a result of this report, July advancing In MV8Stc. I lie upturn was aided by an excellent demand lor cash both at Mlnnepolis and Kansas Cltv. A decrease of l,6ii.noo bn. In the world's visible supply compared with an Increase of I.WO.ooo bu. last year waa also a bullish factor. lAte In the session the market lost Its bullish tone on selling by pit traders who were led to believe that a prominent long waa quietly disposing ot considerable wheat. The market closed nesr the lowest point of the day with July at S3'c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 41.3'W bu. Primary receipts were lso.Roo bu.. compared with 170.901 bu. a year ago. Minneapolis. Du luth and Chicago reported recelpta of 75 cars against 261 cars last week and VJ cars a year ago. Much confusion attended earlv trading In the corn pit owing to the adoption yes terday of a rule making No. 3 corn of till kinds deliverable on contracts at a discount of 5c per bushel. This will necessitate trading In two styles of contracts, desig nated as "old" and "new," until such time as all deals originating under the old rule have been closed up. The bulk of the small business today was In the new July. The new ruling had a weakening erreci. July (new) opened unchanged at 474c. sold off to 4iic and closed at 46ff 164c Local receipts were lis cara witn seven or coo trsct grade. Liberal receipts and wet. weather had a depressing effect on the oats market. Trading was very flulet. Julv opened un changed to 4o lower at 294c to 294c stood between 29(&294o and J94C and closed at 294c Local receipts were 11 cars. Provisions were steadv on moderate sup port from packers. Pit traders were In clined to sell owing to Increased receipts of live hogs. The volume of business, how ever, was small. At the close July pork was unchanged at 112 3:. liflrd was a shade lower at $7. 306 7.324. Ribs were off o at 17.25. SHORTS BID UP A FEW ISSUES Roylag la Generally lalanpnrtaat and Aggregate Dealings la the Smallest of tha Year. NEW TORK. May I -The advance In storks today represented a readjustment of the price level aa an Index of conditions rather than a response to any Important new demand. The readjustment was ef fected for the moat part In London before trsdlng had commenced here. As a conse nuance the rlrst prices made here this morn ing showed yesterday's losses rather more than recovered. Changes during th rest of the dBy were unimportant. The change In condition which this was designed to measure was the quieting of apprehension or an emnroiiment or ureal nrnain ana France, with their respective allies. In the present war over the disputed question of neutrality. The purpose of the two govern ments to avoid friction was made so mani fest by today's event that little fear re mained of a hostile Issue tn the discussion. There it reason to believe. In fact, that money differences had more to do with yes terday's weaknesa In Indon than waa sus pected, while the hope of avoiding conae quences had to do with the vigorous re covery there today. American Securities seemed to have been oversold by the bears In connection with yesterday's foreign weakness and their ef fort to recover stocks was the Importsnt factor In today's rally. Aside from this buying the dsy'a business was unimportant and the aggregate transactions In fact fell to nesr the lowest figure for the year thus far. Only a few daya early In January show a smaller total. The movement of prices was a creeping one, In accordance with the small business doing. While the buying became little more than nominal there was small pressure to sell. The ex cesnlve dullness at the advance Is a warn ing of the unwillingness of operators to em hark Immediately on new ventures on tha long aide of the market. Borne fears were felt that there mav be liquidation yet to be completed and which may sppesr from time to time, as In the case of Ixindon selling yesterday, or which may be Invited br any effort to put up prices. The approach of the period for going Into effect of the stock transfer tax had some Influence In dls couraglng the new commitments, as It Is generally expected that professional trad Ing operations will be hampered by thn operation of the new law. Pennsylvania failed to share In the strength of the day"s market. Th weeklv croi) report offered nothing to disturb the present feeling of confidence over the grain crop. There was some discussion of the president's remsrk In hl Denver speech on federal supervision and regulation of corporations and the con slderstlon of the coming dlscusalon of this subject In congress was thus revived.
