The range of prices paid In Minneapolis,
as reported uy tne towards-wood com

CHICAOO. May B. F.xcellent weather
conditions for the growth of the hew crop
formed the primary cause of a weak wheit
market here today. At the close July
wheat was off if. Corn and osts are up
tc. Provisions are 2V: to 5c hlKher.
Sentiment In the wheat pit was bearish
and the volume of trading; was smsll.
llnlllnnt weather was deridedly a fnrtor
in tendine to hokl duvn tirlres. One cause
nf dullni'ss was uncertainly surrounding
the government crop report which will be
Issued next Wednesdsy and which will
give the condition and acreage ot winter
Knout. The general Impression seemed to
be that the report would be of a benrlsh
character. At the opening the market was
quite stendy and In a fair demand from
shorts. July was up a shade. Belling by
pit traders soon caused a reaction. July
declining to S2c. Poor demand for cash
wheat and flour !n outside markets had
considerable Influence In forclna down the
optional value of wheat In this market.
The market closed easy, with July st K!H'ir
K3'c Clenrances of wheat and flour were
equal to M,3n0 bti. Exports for the week,
ns shown by Kradstreets were equal to
1.279,0(0 bu. Primary receipts were 137.(
on., enrnmrw wun nz.i'i a year ago.
Minneapolis, Dulmh and Chicago reported
receipts of 91 cars, against 141 Inst week
and 4 a year ago.
Small receipts of corn caused fairly ac
tive buying by shorts, resulting In a firm
market. A mrkl decrease In primary
receipts also aided In creating bullish senti
ment. July opened a shade to h,t)ltc higher
at 4Wi'8 i6'i,r,, sold between 46Vu WHc and
47c and closed at W'iitc. Local receipts
were si cars, with two or contract grade
Oats were firm. Business, however, was
light, with trading mostly In small lots.
The strength was due principally to the
demand for the May option from shorts In
the northwest. July opened unchanged to
a shade hleher at ififi&c to 2Hc, soUi be
tween 2S7'i2'jo and 2tivc and closed at 2S
zhhc. icai receipts were 7 cars.
Provisions were In sympathy with a lc
advance In live hogs. Packers were the
principal buyers. The selling was by pit
traders. At the close July pork W'as hip

and ribs were ZHfi&c higher at I7.27v,h7.sn.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Whfat,

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Market it Strong and Lostei of Thursday
Are More Than Recovered,
VOLUME OF BUSINESS SHRINKS
Prices Have to Be Did Ip Higher
Than Before the Slams te Rt
cover an Equal Member
of Shares.
NEW TORK. May 6. The stock mar
ket was free today from the pressure of
urgent liquidation which broke yesterday's
market and recovered vigorously something
more than the losses of the day before.
There was a decided shrinkage in the vol
ume of business, showing that the bidding
up of prices had to be carried further to
it-cover a less amount of stocks than was
sold yesterday. This constitutes an excel
lent showing of the reduced volume of
stock oflering for sals' and la an Indication
of t -clinical strength in the market and of
the relief afforded by- the liquidation so
far completed, but there was a very marked
falling off In the demand at the higher
level of prices, the dullness of tne trading
showing a progressive Increase. The in
ference Is that the buying was to a large
extent forced In the same way that yes
terday's selling was. The bear traders w ho
followed the decline yesterday with free
short sales felt obliged to cover their short
contracts In face ot the evidence that more
urgent liquidation was completed. Some
fears caused yesterday by the signs of
weakness In the market or which wero
given currency by the Industry of the
bears, lost their force today and the re
lief thus afforded helped on the rally.
There was no Important change In the
news bearing on values, but there was a
decided change In the temper shown in Its
Interpretation. Yesterday's fears of a con
flict at the Union Pacific special stock
holders meeting over the proposed issue
of 3iuu,i00,0i0 of preferred stock were con
verted today In hopes of somo extraction
at that meeting of specific benefit to stock
holders. The street was without news
from the meeting up to the closing of the
market. The Northwestern and Paclllc
slocks were the aggressive leaders of the
rebound In prices, aa they had been most
acutelv affected bv the preceding drop.
The southern group was also notably strong
aa they also had suffered more than the
average from the violence of the reaction
from the excessive speculative advance.
Consolidated Gas had the benefit of the
failure of the attempt to pass a law rei
ducing the price of gas In this city.
The effect of the weakness here yesterday
had an unsettling Influence In today's foreign
market and some action seemed to be given
there also to the fears of International
friction. The foreign depression was only
of slight effect on our opening market and
the recovery set in promptly. The esti
mates of the week's currency movement
Indicated a nominal ghln In cash by the
banks. The upward rush of People's Gas
at the end was due to the report of the
defeat of a gas bill In the Illinois legisla
ture. The sharp reaction during the final
hour and the recovery to the lirm closing
were notable for the exceedingly light
dealings on which they were effected.
Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value.
32.500.OdO. United States bonds were all un
changed on call.
The quotations on the New York Stock
exchange ranged as follows:
Bales. High. Low.wiose.
anti-German articles In the British press.
PARIS, May 3 Prices on the Hours to.
day were weak owing to the unfavorable
American advices, but at the closing they
had an upward tendency. Russian Imperial
4s were quoted at 8S.10 and' Russian bonds
of 1904 at 510.09.

Wool Market.
BOSTON. May 5. WOOL The Commer
clal Bulletin will say tomorrow: The wool
market Is very strong here, with higher
prices, while the west Is feverishly excited.
Considerable speculation In second wools
has taken place and new territories have
moved well at full values. Australian and
6outh American crossbreds sold moderately
and the disposition of owners is rather to
buy than to sell. A very good business -has
been done in pulled wool. The lxmdon
sales opened 615 per cent higher and all
foreign markets are exceedingly strong.
The shipments of wool from Boston to dale
from December 29, 1904, according to the
same authority, are 88,436,574 pounds, against
70, ,98.633 pounds at the same time last year.
The receipts to date are 98,803,142 pounds,
against 65,436,138 for the same period last
year.
L,ornuor, way &. wool-The otrenngs
at the wool sales today numbered 11.994
bales. There was keen buying for all sec
tions and merinos showed an average ad
vance of 74 Per cent above the March eales.
Qualities suitable for America often ad
vanced 16 per cent. Crossbreds, especially
llaht conditioned, were In sellers favor
owing to the anxiety of home and American
buyers to secure mem. ine sirengtn is
attributed to the recent expansion in the
consumption In manufacturing centers and
to the fact that the direct imports are now
going into strong hands. The Increased
American demand for fine grades is respon
sible for a hardening tendency in coarse
crossbreds, although the consumption of
the latter is restricted by the dullness in
the exports yarn trade. Following are the

CATTLE There was a light run of cattle
!n tight this morning at all points, but the
e-.ime as has been the case of lute the de
mand was of very limited proportions, and
as a result trading was very slow from
start to finish, with the tendency of prices
downward rather than otherwise. In spite
of the light receipts it was rather late be
fore a clearance was made.
The market on beef steers could not be
quoted better than slow and barely steady.
Something that Just struck the luncy of a
buver sold at about steady prices, but the
nenrrsl run of cattle was much neglected
and hard to sell at what looked to be steady
prices. In many cases, In (fact. It was Im
possible, so thut somo pretty good cattle
went for considers biy less money than the
same kinds brought yesterday. The com
moner tne quality tne harder It was to make
a satisfactory sale. There was nothing that
could be called strictly choice on sale, so
that the market on paper does not seem
particularly high.
The market on cows and heifers was also
very dull and packers apparently did not
seem to care whether they got any fresh
supplies or not. Some of the choicer
bunches sold without a great deal of trouble
at steady prices, but the common to me
dium grades were extremely hard to dis
pose of and r.ilces were a little lower than
yesterday. There was a choice bunch of
spayed helfera on sale, but they were so
much better than anything that has been
here of late that there is nothing to com
pare them with. Although comparatively
tew cows and heifers were on sule It was
late in the day before a clearance was
made. ,
Bulls, veal calves and stags were all slow
sale, but about s.tauy.
There were hardly enough stockers and
feeueis here toaay 10 nmke a market. Tne
demand from the- country has been nothing
i hut receints have been so light this
Veek that very little change in the market
has been noted from day to day. Repre
sentative sales:
BEEF STEERS.
r
the tendency of prices co-nttntied upward.
The market here epened fairly active and
a nickel higher than yesterday. The popu
lar price was 35.S0, with the choicer loads
rolng largrlr st 85.324 and ns high as
S374 was paid for a prime heavy load
weighing 839 pounds. The bulk of the hnge
changed hand In good season, but towsrd
the close, when some of the late trains
began to arrive, packers became rather
bearish and the close waa very show and
weak. Salesmen thought they ought to get
the opening prices for the late arrivals
and It was late before a complete clearance
was made.
Today's advance takes the market well
back toward the high point of the season.
whlchTwas April 24, when the average cost
was a little over 86 35. Aa today's average
Is rlsht round 85.80. It is seen thst the
market Is within about a nickel of the
high point. Representative sales

SHEEP There was not a heavy

was there any apparent improvement In
the demand. The inarKet, though, held just
snout steady on anything at all desiraoie,
hut aside from the better grades the mar
ket was very slow, and It was late before
a clearance was made. This was true of
both sheep and lambs. Clipped ewes sold
up to $4.45, and as high as 36.60 and 36.30
was paid for Colorado wooled lambs.
