TEST 'CASE AGAINST HASTINGS MAN
Ioo1a Harris, Who Maaed a Paper
Setting; Forth tha Reliability ot
Others la Sow In Po.l
tloa to Defea.
)
Soma time In 1JU0 two men, named C. L.
Watklns and J. W. Harris, came to Omatia
and launched Into tha whirl of rife here a
company known as the Equitable Diamond
Tontine company. The gentlemen brought
with them, according to Attorney L. I. Ab
bott, a paper sotting forth tholr good char
acter and reliability a sort of guarantee,
as tbe attorney calls It purporting to have
been signed by the president of an Adams
county bank and thirteen other leading
citizens ot Hastings.
The diamond distributers did considerable
business in Omaha, but after a while they
left, and tha lads who had a hot hunch to
possess the stones that flash and fascinate
were left without any diamonds to keep
warm their regard for Messrs. Watklns
and Harris.
Now Attorney Abbott has entered suit
against one Leopold llahn, whoae name is
said to hara appeared on the Hastings cer
tificate of good character, and has secured
service on Mr. Hahn, who Is understood to
be living In Omaha at the present time.
For tha gentlemen whose names appear
on what Mr. Abbott calls "the guarantee"
shown up by Watklns and Harris, It is to
ba said that they deny ever having signed
any such paper and tlist if It la In existence
they know nothing of it or how or when It
was prepared and signed. Mr. Abbott
thinks they may have signed It, but have
forgotten. So on behalf of the contrlbu
ters to tho diamond subscription list ha Is
going to have a test In the county court of
the genuineness of the signatures aatd of
the responsibility of tha Hastings men to
the Omaha men, If the signatures ara
genuine.
