It in con sidered a probable that eastern longs would not want a runaway market at this time ami It whs predicted they would seil wheat today in order In cause a break. This they old. Tlie July followed the May, opening at $.K and having for a low point before noon II 01V I he tjuropean market seems to be Blisoluttly independent of American aentlment. for all of them were depressed somewhat. Thursday they showed little advance. Liverpool today closed with a lows of VafeV. Antwerp was unchanged, Hui'a Pest weakened 4.c and Berlin' dropped "tc. The wheat market this morning was er ratic and fluctuated widely on small trad ing. It la predicted the May market Irom now on wbl be of this nature ami subject to gains and losses of i or 3 rents in a day. When the crowd Is caught without any buying orders and a little long stuff comes out a break will follow quickly. The Wall street bulls did less Thursday to support the market than they have for some time-. It was the sort which did not need it. The shorts were so eager to rover they absorbed ail offerings. It Is estimated within a few days Jo.oOu.oOQ bushels of 'short w heat have been covered. Most of the shorts bad a losa of 10 cents, and the foreign shorts cot out Wilh hivsvy losses. Gates and Ids crowd 'are operating In 'Chicago through twenty-two houses, so that it Is very hard to follow his trail. Chicago market ad vanced more than others Thursday. .Minneapolis ta said to have 7.ono.mo huh ela of wheat to deliver on contracts. Du blin, has several million bushels also, and the price there is h. rents under Chicago, Whlcn makes good shipping by the lake. A question baa been raised hs to the quality of tha No. 1 northern held In these two markets. It Is rumored the grading at Minneapolis and Duluth lias been eased domn and that the grain will not grade in Chicago. Minneapolis, stocks have de creased snn.OH) this week and Iiuluth has Increased BO.floo. The northwestern cars. In cluding Chicago, are S72 today. 218 last week and 3m lust year. The primary receipts are 3S7,oou bushels, against 4ii9,00n bushels lust year nnd the rhlpments 21(i.ooo bushels. against 31ii,0o) bushels last year. The Ar gentina market is strong through good shipping demand. The Argentina visible Is 3,HsO,000 bushels, against 5.008,000 bushels last year. Thc-shlpmenta lire very heavy. Some of the corn bulls have turned hear temporarily. The lower rates on corn and oat which nro being put In by the railways from central and eastern Iowa will have a tendency to Increase the receipts In Chi cago., and altogether with the better run ning condition of the roads and (he milder weather will have a weakening effect on tha market nnd may cause a fraction de crease; ' Tho May corn did not advance any today. The Argentina corn shipments are heavier that! last week, being; 347.000 bushels, against 214.ono bushel., but much smaller than the shipments of a year ago, which ware 4ft .OM bushels. The Aruentlnu corn Is arriving In small amounts from the Interior, but Is of 'satisfactory' (pialll v. The visible there Is 994.0m) bushels, against 1.2KO.0O0 bush ela last yenr. The American primary re ceipt are 331.ono- bushels, against 40.000 bushels last year and the shipments 2SO.00O bushels, against 396.0O0 bushels last year. Omaha Cash Prices.. Kstlinatra of the quantity of long whest disposed of while the selling pressure lasted tint the amount In the neighborhood of 6.im).0"i bushels. While the general mar ket was Influenced mainly by the action of the May delivery, the extreme weak ness was due In part to bearish news. Re. reipts In the northwest today were larger than for tha corresponding day last week or a year ago. Total primary receipts were only a trifle lesa than last year. A fit. Iuls trade journal made claims that a greater area of fall sown wheat Is pro tected by snow than for many years. The market was extremely nervous the entire session. May rallied materially on cover ing by shorts, but distant deliveries were Inclined to drag. At the olose the msrket was quite weak, with Mav st fMMii. July closed at 81. mS. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 2U,UO bushels. Exports for the week as shown by Bradstreet's were equal to 637,000 bushels. Primary re ceipts were 3H7.100 bushels, compared with 4i.4ui bushels a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of 272 cars against 21ft cars last week and 2f4 cars :. year ngo. Influenced by the stump In wheat, the corn market was subjected to heavy sell ing pressure, several prominent longs be ing acrlve on that side of the msrket. Fear of greatly Increased receipts resulting from milder weather throughout the week was again a potent factor. The principal de mand came .came from shorts. NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Market is Bluggiih Both in Volnme'and Amount of Flactaationa, NEW HIGH RECORD FOR UNION PACIFIC Northern fererldes Also Makes a Sharp Jump . of Several Points Grata Hate War Affects Railroads. NEW YORK. Feb. 17 -The dimenslnns of the market diminished today to some ex. rut both In tne volume of transactions and ir. the sise or the fluctuations. A njmtwr of the less prominent stocks moed widely, but the mass of securities which usually make up the market were sluggish. L'n.on 1 acinc leusserted Its loadership in the mar ket and the strength which It developed terved to hold prices elsewhere, atier rather distinct sagging tendency had bo come manifest. The early movement upward was fairly general, although It tacked the lately prev alent demand lor Ixindon account, opera tions for that renter shitting to the selling side today. The movement was generally attributed to a covering up of short con tracts put out late yesterday, largely under the apprehension that the dispute in the Equltuole Life Assurance society would prove incapable of being healed. The policy of reconi'llation which prevailed at yester day afternoon's meeting of the directors was hailed with decided relief 111 Wall street, whre a considerable, but vague, dread was felt of the ulterior consequences of the quarrel. This Influence In stocks wa short lived, but It was followed by the lively upward movement In a number of Industrial stocks, which are rarely con spicuous In the market. News to account for these movements was not fort hcnm.ng, but they were quite generally attributed to conditions In the particular trade with which the properties were connected and to a growth In earnings, giving rise to sup positions of dividend benefits to be either begun or Increased. Movements In this class of stocks aro not of strong sympa thetic effect on the general list and they spent their force rather quickly to be suc ceeded by reactions. The 2-polnt rise in Union Pacific to a new high level was of more effect and arrested the downward tendency In prices. The large size of the Individual blocks of this stock which were dealt In were testimony to the large resources enjoyed by the oper ators In It. The movement had its custom ary accompaniment In Northern Securities on the curb. The latter stock, on a volume of trading unusual In the curb market, roue buoyantly several points above Its previous record price to the neighborhood of 160. Great Northern preferred, on the Stock ex change. Jumped 10 points on very light deal ings. Further deep cuts In the rates on grain for export Jiad a disturbing effect on sentiment and witnessed to the growing seriousness of the war for that traffic. A talk of a strike of the New Haven firemen was also f)t some effect. The forecast of the week's currency movement gave promise of a weak bank statement and the rate for enll money ruled slightly higher In consequence. Tho regular movement with the interior Is still slightly in favor of New York and the In dicated loss of over 85.000,000 In cash is al together up to the gold outgo. But the gain on balance from tho Interior has fallen to almost nominal proportions, Indicating the approach of the turn of the tide. With the late reaction In Union Pacific prices else where fell back again end the closing was heavy. Ponds were Arm: total sales, par vnlue, 84.415.o00. United States 2s advanced i per cent on call. Trains were very slow In arriving, which delayed the market In bad shape. As a genernl thing, however,. Just about steady prices wi.e paid. Buyers did not take hold with any great amount of life, but they all ap peared to be willing to take a few, and aS a result most of the early arrivals changed hands In good season. Buyers were very indllterent and did not start out to buy any cattle until nearly 11 o'clock, and it was well along toward noon before much business was transacted. All markets, however, suffered, so that the break In prices here was no worse than at other points, The beef steer market could liest be de eoribed by calling It very slow and gen erally 10c to 15c lower than yesterday's average market. All of the advance of the early-esia. of Viie -week-h mnt-beenv lost In the last two days and some salesmen think that closing prices this week are not aa good as those a week ago. It was late In the afternoon before even the bulk of the cattle was disposed of, and taking everything Into consideration it was one of the most unsatisfactory markets that have been experienced this winter. The cow market also broke about 10c to 15c, as compared with yesterday's general market. Trading was, perhaps, a llttie more active than In the case of steers, an that the bulk of the offerings was disposed of in a comparatively short time, but the market did not open until about 11 o'clock. That, of course, made It late In the day before anything like a clearance whs made. All kinds suffered in the decline, the good as well as the common. Bulls, veal calves and stags were all slow snd lower. There was a fairly good demand for heavy cattle of good quality, both green and warmed up, and such kinds sold about steady, but the common and light weight cattle were very slow and lower. V 1th more moderate weather the prospects for an Improvement In the demand from the country are more encouraging. Represen tative sales: BEEF STEERS. No. Pr. No. Av. As a result prices suffered a sharp decline. Light weights here broke 10c to 15c, while the heavier weights sold generally a dime lower. Trading was not very active at the decline, as salesmen did not like to tske off that much, and besides that buy ers did not bid very freely. The hogs, thougb, kept moving toward the scales, so that It was not long before the bulk of the early arrivals was disposed of. Light weights sold largely from $4.70 down, with some prime light weights at (4-724. Butch ers and mixed hogs went from (4.70 to $4.75 and heavies largely from (4.75 to $4 85, with a top of (4 874. The quality of the hogs today was hardly up to the usual stan dard, there being s large number of light snd common hogs Included In the receipts, and that fact, of course, has a tendency to make a market on paper appear worse when compared, with yesterday than It really was. When the late trains began to arrive the nisrket grew worse rather than belter, so that Die close was slow and weak on all kinds. As hfgu as $4!'. however, was paid for a prime load. Some of the trains did not arrive until afternoon nnd some of the hogs that came In during the morn ing were carried over until uriernoon, so that It was late before a cleurance was made.
