mlllra have been trying to get a draw
back established on hour made for export
from Canadian wheat. They claimed It was
ntlal to mix Canadian wheat In order
J a superior wheat for export flour.
The Dakota and Minnesota fanner have
brought miirh pressure to bear against the
meaaurc, saying It would reduce Amrr::,i:i
Wheat to a par with the Canadian.
Much Interest haa been aroused by the
Vlalt of Gates, the head of the present
wheat operation, in Chicago. He I said

action may be possibly the reverse this

the present price la 16 cents below the corn.
The northwest lias hf'gcd most of Its oats

these will have to be taken off as fast as
they Mil the cash. Increased demand for
oats la likely now and decreased receipts.

NEW YORK. Feb. 15. The volume of
dealings In stocks expanded again today
and there was a better show of strength
than yesterdav and In the Important stan
dard stocks. The strength of this claa
waa not general, however, by any means
and the Investigation which came Into
evidence at the higher level was an ad
ditional modifying factor In the judgment
of the dav s market. Industrial stocks of
the necond and lower grades were still a
conspicuous feature of the trading, with
the cooling effect on the speculative tem
per which the predominance In speculation
of these stocks almost Invariably causes.
Probably the principal Influence on the
day's operations was the' course of the
foreign exchanges, indicating quite def
initely the termination for the present of
the movement of gold to France. An en
gagement of $760,000 for shipment to South
America did not change this conviction,
although It is true that this operation in
dicates a remaining command of our gold
supply for the benefit of London. But
symptoms of relaxation In the foreign
money markets were unmistakable and
were effective In lowering the exchange
rates here. A further advance In sterling
at Paris was Indicative of the satisfaction
of the requirements of that center. I-arae
shipments of gold are to be received shortly
In London and open market discounts de
clined there, giving rise to a belief that
the Bank of England will reduce its official
rate tomorrow.
Rumors of peace negotiations were again
an effective force In foreign markets and
reflected beneficial Influence here. Prices
had the benefit as well of rumors of some
special developments bearing upon the val
ues of inllviclttal stocks. There was a
strong demand for Ontario & Western,
which was explained about the Stock ex
change by the assertion that the control
of this property, recently acquired for the
New York. New Haven Hartford, was
to be turned over to the New York Central
to harmotilie objections of the controllers
of that property to the extension of New
Haven Influence Into the trunk lino field.
Besides this movement In Ontario & West
ern cheerful reports of the trade In
anthracite helped the coalers. Reading
showed a continued effect of profit-taking.
The advance In Amalgamated Copper was
due to the current reports of the active
demand for Its product and by the rise In
the price of copper In London. The long
standing rumors of the results to follow
the distribution of Northern Securities on
sets were revived and helped to advance
the Pacifies and Northern Securities it
self. The recent movement in the Iron
and steel Industrials had some extension
but met with a degree of pressure. The
break In Pressed Steel Car caused by the
poor showing In the annual report of the
business for 1904 had some effect on the
group.
The constant departure from the Wall
street district of men influential In the
market and In financial affairs Induces
some caution about commitments by op
erators of smaller resources and begets
a suspicion that operations On a larger
scale are not to be looked for In the Im
mediate future. The reaction on profit
taking In the last hour waa partly recov
ered, but the closing was Irregular.

CATTLE The yards fhla morning had
the appearance ot a Huluruay, or, 111 fact,
of a fcunuay, as only auout twelve loads, or
3u0 head, wcte reported. The liib'l' wind or
yesteruay morning, It seems, tied up ihe
railroads In tills section ot the country,
the worst of the season, so that thiy were
In no condition to operate freight trains.
In the territory tributary to Chicago condi
tions were not so bail, as receipts at that
point amounted to 10,000 head. Another
bad feature of the present situation is die
shortage of refrigerator cars. Packers have
been able to move very little muff this
week on that account, but It is hoped that
the railroads will be able to bring cars
from the east by the time they get their
western lines clea-ed, so that pacKers will
be in shape to properly core lor the live
stock when It does begin to arrive on the
market.
The market on beef steers today could
safely be quoted strong to a dime higher
than yesterday, or generally 25c higher tnan
at the close of last week. The few bunches
that were offered this morning changed
hands in a hurry, although the quality was
not very good. Feeder buyers have not
been competitors on the warmed-up rattle
this week, no that they have not shown
quite as much Improvement as the better
grades, but utlll all kinds are right around
a quarter higher.
The cow market was also active and
strong to a dime higher than yesterday, or
generally 2oc higher than last Friday.
Buvera all seemed to be anxious for sup
plies, but of course there was not enough
here today to make a killing for even one
house. The few that were offered, how
ever, were picked up at an early hour.
Bulls, veal calves and stags could all be
quoted strong and active.
The atocker and feeder market was again
slow and weak. Practically all of the stock
cattle that have arrived this week, to
gether with those carried over from last
week, are still in speculators' hands, so
that naturally they are not anxious for
more supplies. Nothing was shipped to
the country yenterday. The few cattle sold
today were a little lower thati yesterday.

HOOS There were only eight cars of
hogs on sale tills morning, or not enough
with which to muke a fair teat of the
market. Packers ull seemed to be anxious
for fresh supplies, but there were not
enough here to make a killing. Buyers,
though, went out aa soon as the trains ar
rived and isiuglit up the few 011 sale at
what might be called steady to strong
prlcen. The lighter loads went at S4.80 and
S4. 82,, the butchers and mixed lioga at
S4.86 and one load weighing 337 pounds sold

CUT IN THE DOMESTIC RATE
Missouri Pnclflc Places Omaha on
Fooling with Kansas lt to
Arkansas Points.
The Missouri Pacific Railroad company
announces some new rates on corn and oats
to points to Arkansas and Louisiana, which
rates will have a tendency to place Omaha
on aa equal footing with Kansas. City. The
new rates go Into effect on Friday. A rate
of 10 cents Is made to Memphis, Little
Rock. Pine Bluff. Newport. Poplar Bluff.
Walnut Rlilge ami Hoxle. An 11-ceul rate
Is made to West Wego for export. The
new rate to Tekorkuna. Shreveport. M1111
roe and Alexandria will be 12 cents. The
old differential over Kansas City ha been
reduced 34 cents a hundred, making the
new differential 2 cents over , Kawvillc
Considering the difference of the locals to
Omaha and Kansas City, the new differ
ential will bring most of the rates the sam
from the two cities.
LOCAL COAL SUPPLY IS SHORT
Itnalion Slightly Improved, bnt
Danger of Famine I ol
let Passed.
The coal situation continues about as It
was several days ago. The railways ar
getting their lines open and tire working up
to the schedules again. They hsre been
bringing In enough steam coal lately just
to supply the demand and daily consump
tion. If the weather nnntinues open the
situation will become rapidly less strained.
If, on tha other hand, a storm .come, seil
ous Inconvenience will follow.
