NEW YORK, Jan. 27. The upward course
of prices in the stock market which set
In yesterday, continued quite briskly this
morning and the market tor n time snowed
stri'iigtn and breadth. t'i-nld-rable bu
Ir.a lor London sccount helped to this end.
But the force fif the demand seemed to
be fpent towards the latter part of the
day and there was a notable falling off
in the volume of the dealings and some
leactlon In prp-es. The news oiTered no ex-
filanation for the dying out of the demand.
iui the fact was noticeable tht the re
covery had about made up average loe
of the earlier part or the week. The de
mnnd hesitated at about the recovered
level.
The frattir of the latter part of the dny
wae the large number of Industrials of
all clashes which were pushed upwards
successively. The minor Iron and steel
stocks nnd those of trades allied with tho
metal Industries were sixcially conspicu
ous In the movement. Kuually conspicuous
was the fact that the premier In Indus
trials, the Cnlted States Steel stocks and
Amalgamated Copper were h-avy and lag
gards In the movement. The same was
true of the electrh-s and smelling. This
led to the inference that profits were being
sought on the recent advance In these ma
jor industrials under cover- of the move
ment in the minor Industrials. The ultl
mute yielding of Amalgamated Copper to
the realizing pressure sharpened this sus
picion. The advance of Northern Securi
ties on the curb to a new high record
stimulated the strength In the Harrlmiti
stocks nnd Erie kept up Its accompanying
moemenl as for some time past. Head
ings strong statement of DecemlxT net
earnings was a helpful factor for the
coalers. The entering upon Um stage of
rate cutting in the dispute over export
grain traffic for the Atlantic and the gulf
ports whs regarded with dissatisfaction.
The settlement of the lnierborough Rapid
Transit labor question helped the local
tractions. I'ncertalnly over tomorrow's
bank statement added to the hesitation of
the late market. The receipts of currency
on bit lance from the Interior seem sufficient
to about offset the export of gold, although
tomorrow's gold shipments will not figure.
In the hank statement. Some slight guln
Is therefore expected In the cash Item,
but the loan Item Is again a mystery. It
Is considered probable that last week'a
record expansion may have a counterpart
In this week's statement. The compilation
of the reports of the condition of rhe city
trust companies on December 31 seems to
throw light on tho movement of bank Joans.
Compared with June 30 preceding the trust
companies have Increased their deposits
over I15.iji)0.i"). while the cash to their
account In banks hud been reduced 8.-1.-674,4C4.
The trust company loans for the
same period were Increased i'll,47t.7t;2. With
the profitable money rate for the lust of
the year. It Is tlear thitt the trust com

posits, Instead of leaving them ill the
banks. With the decline in money rates
since the first of the year, It Is equally
clear that the trust companies have made
enormous re-depoelts In the banks, which
have had the rvsponidblllty of finding use
for these funds, upon whlcn they must pay
tho trust companies 2 per cent. The con
dition of the week's money market makes
probable a further enormous taking over
of loans by the banks from the trust com

7tjJskTTl.E There was only a fair run of
ralnr- In sight this moaning, bit he tend
ency of prices was downward st all points,
with buyers apparently very Indifferent. It
was late before anv business was trans
acted at this point and the day was well
advanced before a clearance was made.
About the usual proportion of the offer
ings consisted of beef steers nnd the quality
was onlv commot to fair, with a few that
could he called fnlr to good. Tlw market
was very slow from start to finish, with
prices generally 106 15o lower on all grades.
Packers did not aeem to care whether they
got inanv cattle or not, which of course
made It difficult for salesmen to get satis
factory prices.
The cow market also took a drop, the
good to choice grades suffering as well as
the common to medium kind. The general
market could safely be rpioted loedlSc lower,
with some sales even worse than that. Buy
era took their own time about atarting out
and when they did go out their bids were
so much lower that it was some time before
any business was transacted. It was what
would be-alled a slow, mean market from
stnrt to finish.
Bulls, veal calves and stags wvre also
low sale, with prices a trifle lower.
There were s good many stockers and
feeders Included In the receipts, but the de
mand for the better grades was about equal
to the surply and prices held lust about
stendv. The common and light cattle,
though, were badly neglected nnd In moat
cases salesmen had to take a little less
monev for such kinds than was paid yester
day. Representative sales:
BEES' STEERS.

HOOS There was a liberal run of hogs
at Chicago this morning, about 46.000 being
reported. A.i a result prices there broke a
dime and caused a corresponding slump at
this point, even though receipts were not
excessive. The market hero was rather
slow in opening, with bldB generally a dime
lower on all kinds. Lightweights sold
largely from II1 down: medium mixed
hogs sround $4.B2'. and heavleei largely
from $4.65 10 14.75. with a top at 14 0. Trad
ing was not active at these prices and It
was rather late before even the bulk of tha
offerings was disposed of.
The latter enu ui me iiiaraai was very
alow and weak, late sales being mostly l'X((
15c lower. Homs preiiy gooa nuge had to
sell under $4 ft) on the close. Salesmen of
.ira wrre slow to take the prices offered.
but ss there was nothing to indicate any
improvement, they gradually cut loots.
