Jan. 24 Th most notaiile fact about trading In stocks today was the decided subsluence of activity. The totie. however, shoaed evldir.t Imp'ovemet t over that of vesterrtav and price started up ward briskiv from the outset. This was du in large rart to the less alarming view taken of the course of event in Rus sia. The Idea that an Immediate overturn of the existing government was threat ened was pretty definitely dismissed. Tn-re was some disposition to argje that Russia s internal troubles might have the effect 'of hastening the conclusion of peacp with Japan and the cutting off of tlie enormous expense of the war with the possibility ot a positive benefit resulting to the finances of the empire. But the foreign situation had iittle direct affect here, excent in a relative way a hen there was a cessation of the foreign pressure to liquidate Amer ican securities against threatened losses in other directions. Free from this Influence, there aas a normal tendency toward re coverv. In a few Individual stocks there aas a resumption of attempts to lift prices. Th- suppos-d Imminence of the nruiourice ment of the Southern Pacific refunding plan waa a contrtbutary cause to the firm ness of the llarrlman stocks. There was a disposition to attnhute the movement in Erie. whP'h wa quite conspicuous, to a supposed connection with the aide-reaching settlement of the Xorth-rn Swuritle rase, whii li Is n potent mystery for stimulating ail sons of movemens in the market Re ports of very heavy orders by railroads for 1 nriog" material acre a nei in 1 nn- States Steel preferred The Initiation of dividends on Hide and leather prr fcrred aas u favorable Influeme on the Industrial list. The market on beef sfeers could be quoted steady to a little lower. Buyers seemed to lie anxious for the more desir able grades and such kinds sold without , great deal of trouble at Just about the same prices that were paid yesterday. When it came to the common to medium kinds Ihe market was rather slow and prices unevenly lower. In a good many Instances sales were made as much as a dime lower. There was a fairly good demand for the good to choice cost and heifers both from shippers and local packers. Such kinds sold In verv much the same notches they did vesterday. but. the same n alth steers. Ill market was r.ot o good on the common to medium kinds. Th prices paid were un even and sales acre made all Ihe way from ticarlv stead to a dime loaer. Trading was not verv active on that (lass of rfTer Ings. so mat it was late before a elaar anop aas made of een the earlier arrivals. Bulls wer loa- ale and a trifle lower. Veal calves did not show much change. Except In the cai-e of good heavy feeuers. which sold about steady, the demand for stock cattle was limitfd. The cold aeather, It was feared, aould keep buyers at home, so that speculators were not at all anxious to get loaded up a'ith common cattle, and such kinds were slow sale and weak to a dime lower.
