be audited by an expert. The requ-t was
referred to the finance committee, with tti

and ! carried out In accordance with the
wishes of the bonding- company. Nine spe
cial tax ordinances for Improvements were
passed. The first payment on tht-s spe
cial Improvement taxes Is due In fifty days
from the passage of the ordinances. Dis
trict Improvement bond ordinance for the
grading of J and I streets were Introduced
and referred to the Judiciary committee.
Clerk Glllln read a communication from
the Highland Park Improvement club re
garding afreet car transfers and the cutting
off of telephone tolls between Omaha and
South Omaha. The communication was or
dered placed on file.
There was a request from Parks, Johnson
& Parks, asking that the Arm might draw
the usual reserve held back for paving, and
In lieu of the reserve the firm agreed to
give an Indemnifying bond. Thia was re
ferred to the finance committee. There Is
being held bac k as a reserve about tT.OnO as
a guarantee of the paving laid by the com
pany on O street and Thirtieth street.
A charter revision committee, composed
of Counclimen Klewlt, Queenan, Atlklns,
City Attorney Lambert, C. W. Miller, A.
H. Murdork and Jay Laverty was ap
pointed. The committee will meet with the
city attorney at an early date to talk over
charter amendments.
Notice of appeal was served on the mayor
and council In the damage claims of Carl
and Lena Eckstrum, Theresa Stephens,
Fannie Wolf and E. Lineman.
Bonds for the grading of Twelfth street
and the grading of B street were aold to
Dan Hannon nt par.
John Condon tiled a damage claim for
15.000 for Injuries received by falling on a
slippery sidewalk. Thla claim was referred
to the city attorney.
Adkins, Klewlt and McCralth were named
as a committee to wait upon the I'nlon Pa
cific officials in regard to the construction
of a viaduct across the tracks at F street.
Adjourned until January 23.
More School Rooms Neeiled.
At a meeting of the Board of Education
last night It was agreed that more school
room waa needed and the architect of the
board will be called upon to draw plans
for a four-room addition to Corrlgan school
and a six-room addition to the Madison
school. With the opening of the new high
school building the present annex la to
be moved to property near Twenty-third
and R streets. By thla move the Brown
Park school will be relieved of Its over
crowded condition. Superintendent Mc
Lean reported that the teachers now serv
ing without pay In order to gain experi
ence are getting along very nicely. The
schools are reported to be well attended
and the enrollment Is constantly Increas
ing. There Is very little tardiness at the
present time, as pupils appear to be work
ing hard to secure the blue pennant.
Three Knnanar Boys Taken Home.
Frank Travel, George Pierce and Will
Parker, all about 14 years of age, were
taken In charge yesterday by the police
and were held until lust evening. These
lads ran away from their homes In Ne
braska City and came to South Omaha
seeking work. The chief of police of Ne
braska City telephoned Chief Briggs yes
terday morning and the youngsters were
soon rounded up and placed In the de
tention department. Last night the boys
were taken back home by an officer from
their home and they appeared glad at the
proHpect of getting back to warm meuls
and comfortable beds again.
Judge Caldwell Imposes Fines.
Justice Caldwell, who Is occupying the
police court bench during the Illness of
Judge King. Is causing a surprised look to
come on the faces of many of the old
timers here. For a plain drunk Judge
Caldwell Imposes a fine of tl and costs.
This means a total of U. No one gets
away from Caldwell these days. For be
ing drunk and disturbing the peace the fine
la doubled and a drunk with frills costs
more. Judge Caldwell is making money
for. the city while he is on the bench and
old-timers are commencing to hike or stay
under cover for a time. A mere look-In
now cost tl and costs, and resisting an
officer costs the prisoner a county tall
sentence or 113 In good money.
Workmen Instnll Officers Tonight.
This evening at Workman temple. Twenty-fifth
and M streets. Ancient Order of
United Workmen lodge. No. 66, will Install
officers. The Installation Is to be con
ducted " by Grand Master Workman J.
Jaskalek. After the Installation addressed
will ba listened to by the members. The
program Is as follows: "Newspaper Men,"
Henry C. Richmond; "Courts and Their
Relation to Fraternallsm," Judge A. C.
Troup? "The Eastern War and Its Relation
to Fraternallsm," James W. Carr; "Pa
triotism," A. H. Murdock; "Workmanship
aad Nebraska," George A. Magney; "Wel
fare of the Order," Jacob Jaskalek. Hon.
A. L. Sutton will be the toastmaster. A
banquet Is to be served to all members
of No. 66. and every member Is Invited to
attend. There Is to be no charge for the
banquet. James A. I fa 11, who signs him
self on the Invitations as a member of
the "Hash committee," says that he Is
going to give the members aomethlng out
side of the ordinary. Sandwiches will be
barred, but there will be plenty of digest
ible food 'and enough on hand to provide
for all who attend.

be drawn during the winter, and while
these are being made subscriptions to the
building fund will be solicited. It Is un
derstood that the big corporations are In
favor of the Idea and will give such an In
stitution financial support. Those Inter
ested In furthering the Interests of a hos
pital here may obtain Information by con
ferring with W. S. King, the president of
the association,
