fior.iihlnt dolr.g in May wheat. The May
' 'Vnn.Oii 2 cents from IU opening this
tooming. The murk': cpened at ll.iy,. tho
otiirdey rinse having been 11 1.V-. From
.hi- opening the market advanced, with only
n fan- elei'k moments, until $1 ITS was
leached about noon. Then It sagged off lo
' nn.l later closed about $1.17.
The market ia working up near the high
p'-fnt of the year and some think It will be
rl.v surpaased. The high mark wan
lenihed last fall and was tl 18. ImH week
siew a dimlnuatlon of trade (n the wheat
pls and a hardening of valuea. Thraa
things do not come often together. Where
at the beginning of the Week the market
hovered around tl.14 at the close It rallied
a quickly from anything below $1.15. The
eastern long intereat haa become more dnm
lnent and the market la ma narrow it Is
easily manipulated. The aharp advance thla
morning waa largely due to a lark of offer-
". The talent haa become tired of telling
wheat. The contract stork are lower than
they have been In the second week of Jan
uary for yeara. In the six leading markets
the deliverable on contract visible Is H.'gl. mo
bushels. Of thla Mlnneapnlla haa K.f4i.44
huahela and Chicago l.S-ta.uoo bushel, hav
ing leaa than 2.OU0.O0O buahela for the other
market. 8t. Loula having about half this
amount and Kansas Cltv leas than
bushels. Against the l.oOO.om buahela in
Chicago It la estimated there l
buahela of May holding. The primary if
'eipta are llSO.Onn buahela against
buahela last year. The ott-puesage shows
.X9.000 bucbela, a decrease ot 2,21i,VM
buahela.
One of the. feature of the week haa been
thi Increase In low grade wheat at Minne
apolis. Tli Im amounts In the lowest gradea
to an advance of 36 eenta In a month. This
wheat waa 70 rents and la now 95 coins.
No. J northern lias advanced from 10 cents
under the May lo 4 centa. No. 1 northern
la wltMn 1H centa of the May.
The corn on passage la 19.246,000 bushels,
an increase) of Ss6,0u0. Tha receipts are
about as had been expected, nothing excep
tional, but enough to cause a steady In
crease In the visible. The recelpta for the
eek are 940,000 buahela over the shlpmenta.
The wise do not look for an advance with
out some radical change In the aituation.
Oat continue the dullest market. The
cash situation la elightly better. The vis
Ible la Increasing and the speculative mar
ket is without a feature.

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Market Opens with Animation and Values
Are Generally lifhr.
OUTSIDE INTEREST .AILS 19 DEVELOP
In the tfternn there Is a Reaction,
During Which All the Morulug
Gains 4 re l ost losing
I Hull and Weak.
NEW YORK. Jati 9 The second week
of the New Yiar in the stock market
stalled off with some animation ami brisk
advances were scored pretty generally, but
the start proved n fa.se one like that of
the first wei k of the year and interet had
almost completely elieel out by the after
noon. ,
It waa apparent that the movement
representee! very hirgeiv a trial of speeu
lative sentiment on the part of the ptofe-s-sional
operator. and n restless elaso of
traders, who nrc nursing ellssppoinlnii-nt
en secount of the fai.ure of outside Interest
to develop n the market. The ineldent
from which mot was hoped for providing
effect On the trailing was the outcome of
the conference of political party lenders
held in Vnshl;.g;oti on Ssturdiiy afternoon.
The current reports r. gardlng thia con
fcrenco were without official sanction and
varied ronside rahly in thrlr iletsil. Hut
they were generally agreed that It had been
decided thut It would not be feasible to act
during the prraent session on the subject
ot corporate legislation. Wall street is
pecullHry sensitive to ihl subject and
showed evidence of more contentment o er
this prospect (f delay than eliwatisfae lion
over the reported dissension to hold an
extra session ef congress in the fall to act
on tariff revision. Last week the halt and
the reaction In the market were attributed
to a considerable elegree to the Influence
of the tlire'ut of legislation to regulate
corporations. The Inference of the pro
fessional traders that the sellers of last
week on this account would turn buyers
on tho nrw filiation was natural, but
proved to bo hut ill founded.
The disappointing bank statement of Sat
urday was little regnrded in view of the
liiereu.slng oaee In the money 'market.
I-oans for sixty days could be had below
3 per cent, today and for six months the
rate fell to 2', per cent., with growing com
plaisance on tho part of lenders regsrdlng
collateral. The preparation for further
extensive gold exports this week were also
deprived of much of their effecf by this
condition of the local money market. With
discounts advancing In London and the
prospect of some further large loan issues
in that market, the movement of capital
to the center, with money at the present
unremunerativc rates are not to be wonder
ed at.
The routine news of the day continued
favorable to values. Railroad traffic offi
cials again reported the freight movement
limited only by rapacity of the railroad to
carry what was offered, whllo heavy car
shortages tend to congest what cannot be
promptly carried. Special strength waa
shown by Illinois Central with rumors in
circulation of an Intended Increase In the
dividend. .There was a heavy absorption
of Cnlon Pacific while last week's activity
In Erie and New York Central conspicu
ously subsided. There was a special specu
lation In the loea1 transactions, Interbor
ough Rapid transit on the curb making a
volatile, rise of nine points while the
Metropolitan tractions were weak on the
stock exchange. These movements sought
to measure the effect of the extension by
the Interborough company Into the Sub
urban truction field. The morning's up
ward movement was fairly general as was
the afternoon reaction. Many of the morn

CATTLE There was quite a lioeral run
of cattle here this morning, bul ihe qual
ity of the offerings whs Interior. That, of
course, had a depressing eftect upon the
market and made buyers rather Indifferent.
A large portion of the receipts consisted of
feeders, so that in reality the supply of
killers was not at nil excessive.
The market on beef sleera was very un
even. Buyers all seemed to be anxious for
desirable grades, and such kinds could
safely bo quoted steady. As high as $5.10
was paid for a two-load bunch of only
fair quality. When It came to the com
mon and warmed-up kinds, the inarkot
was rulher alow and unevenly lower. On
Friday It will be remembered that packers
were all anxious for supplies, and in view
of the absence of good cattle they bought
the commoner kinds at very high price.
As compared with those high FuUs the
market today was a good deal lower In
spots. The general market today eould
ateady on desirable grades, with others
stesdy o ndeslrahle grades, with others
rather sIott -nd unevenly lower.
There waa tome life to the cow market,
butt alill It was not as bruk as it was at
the clove of last week. Aa a general thing,
though, just about steady prices were paid.
Buyers all aeemed to want a few, and as
offering were not excessive it was not
long before the bulk of the arnvais was
disposed of.
Bulls, veal calves and stags did not show
a great deal of change.
There were about sixty cars of stoekers
and feeders in the yards this morning,
which la a liberal run for this sua son of.
the year. The bulk of them were western
lunge cattle. The large supply naturally
made speculator rather cautious, but still
the better grades could be e(uted steady.
The commoner kinds were tugioi ted more J
or less nnn 111 many e-nse's nun io sen i irine
lower than the name kinds brought laai
week. Representative sales:
