NEW YORK. Jan. ..-Prices of storks
were Inclined to yield again today, but
the pressure was not urgent and any evi
dence of support In the market tenned to
check the selling. Such support developed
for Erie and Heading djnng the course
of the tirst hour and a prcckally complete
recovery of the opening uecunee was msde.
There was a good demand for Illinois
Central, which was accounted for by un
substantiated rumors of an intended In
crease in tne dividend rate. At the re
coered leel of prlcea the demand be
came so languid as to csuse tresh dis
couragement over the fuliure to appear
of the. January reinvestment demand and
pi Ices saageu away again at the last,
making trie dosing weak and dull.
l'isappuintnient was proiessed over the
bank statement, but the showing was not
caicuisted to produce more than a nominal
influence with tno extreme ease ruiltig in
the money nmrk.t. The fact Is not doubted
thai lurieucy lias started to move in a
strong tide to this renter and the failure
of the bank statement to reflect it Is at
ir.buted to crosj currents in the movement
which contuse the computation by the
average system. The Metropolitan Trac
tion stocks were weak from social causes,
no.aoiy tne threat ned competition f r tnelr
suourban traffic and their sharp declines
had a sympathetic effect on the rest of the
market. There were persistent rumors,
siich ns have circulated for some days.
Unit the report of pulled States Steel
eafnlngs for the final nuarler ol tne ear
would prove less aatlstactory than pre
liminary estimates had promixed.
There was considerable discussion of the
conference of political leaders which was
announced to assemble at Washington dur
ing the afternoon to consider the program
for congria.-lonal act. on. including icfcisia
tii concerning corptraljon and tariff
revision. The weekly nit rcanllie reviews
efftrrd no grounds for selling stocks and
the enormous figure of the December an
thracite output was a fostering influence
upon the t.rmness of the coalers. The
lavorable Industrial news failed, however,
to stimulate any demand for stocks ami
the market fur bonds was also quieter
than during the early part of the week.

CATTLE Thre wer only about 100 head
of cattle reported this morning, so that no
particular change in the market took place.
For the week receipts have been a. moat
the same aa for last week, but aa com
pared with the first week of laat year there
Is a decrease of about 7.0U0 head. In viw
of the light run and a fairly good demand
from all sources, the market ruled active
and atronger. except for tha first two days
of the week. .
The market On corn-fed steera has been
rather uneven this week. It will be remem
bered thgt the market last week closed
with a sharp decllre on Friday. That was
followed by another big break on Monday,
Which made the market for the two days
around 2iyH0c lower. Tuesday prices were
about steady at the decline, but a. nee then
the light receipts have caused sharp ad
varrcea each day. so that all of the loss of
last week Friday and of Monday of thla
week has been regained, which takes the
market back to the high point last week.
Choice cattle have been very scarce and
(n fact thrre has not been a finished load
In the yarda thla week. In the absence of
choice cattle the shorter fed varieties have
I . . rpw, ,.(
advanced, aa noted above. This is quite
different from oonditlone at other marksta.
where the advance was confined very
largely to the more dealrable grades. Good
lo cho'lee cattle may be quoted frrm $5.00 to
$5.60 and something strictly prime would
nrvrta hrtne mora than that. Fair to good
cattle sell from $4 26 to $4 76 and the less
desirable kinds from $4.15 down.
The cow market has followed practically
the same course as the trade on steers,
closing prices being practically the same ss
those in force at the high time laat week.
Receipt have apparently been far too light
for the last several days to meet the re
quirements of the trsde, and as a result
buyers have been out early and bought
everything In aisht. common cattle advanc
ing as well aa the better grades. Good to
choice cows and heifers could be quoted
from $3 to $3.75 and atrictly prime heifere
might bring $4. Fair to good grades go
from $126 to $2.90 and cgnners and cutters
from $1.60 to $2.25.
Bulla are also eel' In g fully as Mgh bp they
were last week, the better grades going
largely from $2.90 to $3.60 and the commoner
kinds from $2 to $2.75. Veal calves are at
the highest point they have been In many
re on Ihs. cholretK grades veiling up to W.
The'e hss been a fairly good demand for
stockera snd feeders this week and choice
heavy feeders are if nnvthlng hither than
they were last week. St'ictly choice grades
osn be minted from $3.76 to $4 Tit.. The com
moner kinds of henvv cattle and light cattle
of all grades are only about steady foe the
week. As lis, been previously mentioned
the demand from the country Is confined
chiefly to cattle of rood nuaiity and the n
eeilry now Is lnsely for heavvwelehta
Fate to rood cult's may be emoted from
1.?R to $1.75 and the commoner kinds from
$3.25 down. Representative sa'es:

For the week receipts show a big In
cresse over last week, but as compare.!
with the same week ot last year theie is
a falling off of about 12 ts- head. The
week started In with a lairly liteeral run
and that s. em-d to gle packers the lde;
fist receipts would be heavy all the week,
snd ss a result they broke the mArk"t In
bad shspe. Since Monday, however, re
ceipts have Wen extreme, y light, un.l as a
result all of the loss of last week Kn,1y
and also of last Monday has now been
regained, which makes prices on brth
sneep and lambs at the high pel-it of the
seajton. There seems to be a g.el sirong
demand from all sources, so thst the msr
ket msy be said to be In a gooel. healthy
condition.
Comparatively few feeders have arrived
this week, but the dernanj has been suffi
cient to take evert tlnnec offered at good ,
strong prices. In fact, the demand seems
to be In excess of the riipply. so that
oerythlng sells as fast as offered.
