. of find.
At the regular monthly meeting of the
Omnha Ministerial union. held Mor.day
In the Young Men's Chiistliin association
rooms, Rrv. Thomas V. Moore, pastor ol
the Westminster rrcsbyterlan church and
chairman ot the evangelical committee of
the Ministerial union, nad a paper setting
forth proposed plans for conducting the
rvnngcllral campaign, which probably will
he held from January 22 until February 12,
Inclusive.
The other Important matter brought be
fore the morning's session of the union
was certain pluns of local reform suggested
by Edward Hose water and contained In his
open letter published In The Hce a week
Ago 8'inday. Through a representative of
Mr. Ro.sewater the Ministerial union was
requested to go to the central power, the
. governor of the state, who nppolnts the
Hoard of Fire and J'ollce Commissioners',
with a view of obtaining certain needed re
forms In the matter of midnight closing of
saloons, closing of every saloon within the
proscribed district, regulations In the serv
ice of patrolmen In the "red light" district
and rotation of the city Jail crews and de
tective force. The suggestions also referred
to the eloping of saloons at least during
church hours on Sunday. The Idea sug
gested by Mr. llosewater Is to have the
ministers of the city meet the governor at
an early date and talk the matter over, and
nlso have the church members send peti
tion to the governor.
Referred to a Committee.
Rev. E. Combie Smith of the First Metho
dist made a motion that the matter be re
ferred to a committee ami Rev. Newman
Hall Burdltk of the Second Presbyterian
seconded the motion. Just what action the
Ministerial union will take In the mattei
will be made known at a meeting to be held
next Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock In the
Young Men's Christian association rooms.
After a general discussion and talk re
garding Rev. Mr. Moore's puper on the
e angelical campaign it was decided to
leave the paper in the hands of the execu
tive committee of the union, which com
mittee will meei In n day or so, go over
the various' detail. contained in the paper
and then make a report at the meeting next
Monduy afternoon, at which it is thought
the union will take some positive action as
to thu general working plans for the reform
movement now In consideration.
Rev. Mr. Mooro's paper was a thought
fully and curefully prepared presentation
of the needa for a united movement on thu
part of the evangelical churches of the
city to bring fho musses into the church
and keep thctn there. The proposed plan
Is to have tin ;e weeks' continuous serv
ices In seven districts of the city, having a
service every night In each district during
the series of meetings. The dates sug
Kcs.ad for the mcotlngs are from January
22 to February 12, preceded by two weeks
of cottage prayer meetings, and the cot
tage meetings preceded by the regular
week of prayer observed every year Just
aftr New Year's day. Dr. Moore's paper
suggewee1 the advisability of having special
classes an noon meetings.
Iloi to Do the Work.
The paper contained special reference to
tho needs of attracting the attention of
the masses to 'the fact that the protestant
clergy will be really doing something In
this campaign.
"I would advertise In the newspapers,
placard the city, post up bills even beside
the theatrical advertisements; have the
district committees make & house to house
canvass, send out handbills, use the malls;
all of which would be the means to an end,"
aid Dr. Moore in explaining his ideas of
a general awakening of the people In the
matter of their souls' salvation.
"Turn the city upside down and convince
men we are dead In earnest," was one of
the speaker's closing remarks, spoken with
such force as to leave no doubt but that
he felt the force of , what he was saying.
Rev. E. Comblo Smith, at the close of
the meeting, . called the attention to cir
culars being sent out by the Civic federa
tion and urging all to be present at this
evening's meeting of the Hoard of Fire
and Police Commissioners, at which meet
ing charges preferred by Elmer E. Thomas
against Chief of Police Donahue will be
heard.

the party went without him. Next day,
according to Mrs. Schafer, he got home at

hands. Next it was a water trough that
met Mr. Schafer, as Mrs. Bchafer relates
his story of the day. Two switchmen
from a switch tower rescued him from tho
water trough and pointed out a track
which would take him to East Oakland.
Next Mr. Schafer remembered he was lying
on some straw In a vague neutral colored
nothingness, shouting wildly to some lights
he saw In the distance for help. Mrs.
Schafer testified, Schafer might not have
really , shouted, but only thought he was
shouting. Later Mr. Schafer seems to
have arrived Bomewhere, for, according to
his former wife, he remembered the city
editor of the Oakland Tribune put him on
a car.
Mrs. Schafer testified that during; 1899
Schafer almost monthly was absent from
home for a week or ten days and returned
somewhat out of order. She also testified
he was drunk at home freqjc n'.ly. They
were reconciled In May and in September,
she says, he disappeared for the entire
month. The former Mrs. Schafer, so she
testified, became aware of his return by
waking up one night very much In need
of breath and other consolation. Mr.
Schafer, was attempting, she said, to choke
her and also oft u lug to end her life in
other ways.
