NEW YORK, Sept. 10.-More than a score of women and children were rescued from a fire In five-story tenement at 501 Tenth avenue early today. Twelve families oc cupied the second and third floors and all had narorw escapes, losing everything they possessed. The most sensational rescue of the fire was whan-a mother and two children were taken from the ledge of a fourth-story, window. It waa made after a conspicuous show of bravery and resourcefulness on the part of two 'Udder men. The woman nd children had been driven from .their apartment by the flames and were cling-, lng to the ledge, crying for help, when the firemen arrived on the scene. When a thlrty-flve-foot ladder was ' thrown up against the aide of the burning building It fell fpur feet short of the fourth story window. There was no time to make a .change and two men- rushed up the ladder. Balancing himself on the topmost round, while his 'companion firmly grasped his legs from a more secure position below, Js "radderman" caught the children as ths picthVr dropped them Into" his arms. Other firemen bad taken' positions en the ladder by this time and the rescued ones 'were passed safely dowa from their, dangerous position, ' ' Groceries Extraordinary Sale of Silks Monday Nearly every freight brlnga In new alias, and In point of magnitude and for style And beauty our stock will surpass any pre vious season. When the play "was over the general verdict was that the expected hd happened and that the champion of the Western Golf association had well earned the title and accompanying prises by clever, clean, Consistent work throughout the tour ney. . The weeding out prooess brought the big field of 131 down to Egan and Herreseooff for a final round of 3 holes today. The re port of ths game in detail shows that the Cblccgo mnn got Into a playing stride far too swift for his more youthful opponent and the first half of the match waa over whelmingly lnEgnn'a favor, as he was 9 up at the eighteenth fiole. , For the first two boles of the second round Herreshoff played an even game, with Egan halving both, but Egan won the next. Sept. l?.-8peclal Cable gram to The Bee.) The law and advisory committee of the Free Church of Scotland has issued, by order of the commissioner of the general assembly, a review of the whole case, between them and the United Free Church. The committee states that If the whole of the opinions obtained within the last thirty years ' were made public there is reason for believing that ths lira majority of the Scottish counsel consulted uviu rwws identical un tnose enunciated by the House of Lords. Especially was this the case with regard to the establishment principle of the Free Church constitution. No one acquainted with the facts could fsll tq recognise that those 'who went Into union with lbs United Presbyterian church knowingly ran the risk of rendering themselves unable any longer to administer property devoted to the Free Church Far from the United Preebyterikn church being hastily snd un aeoeaearlly dragged before the' civil courts Printed Crepea. ' On the contrary, the minor ity was shut out of the assembly hall, a guard of police was set over the entrsnee and the minority was excluded from any share In the resources of the church. The minority never disputed the liberty and duty of members of a church majority or minority to alter their creed. But those who changed were not entitled to carry .away property devoted to the use of a church holding a, creed they no longer believed. If the Judgment . appears sweeping. It must be remembered that this was evoked by the failure of the majority to agree with their adversaries while they were In. ths wsy. The -personal Judgment against the re spondents for costs was not pressed for by the appellant, but granted by the lords. Moreover, the costs were Increased by un necessary multiplication . of actions and technical formalities Insisted on by the ma jority. The committee says that It has honestly endeavored to state Its position temperately. The law and advisory committee of the Free Church further states: , "Sympathy has been claimed on the ground that the United Church waa hastily and unneeesarlly dragged before the civil courts by a small minority against whom It also sees matter of objection that are largely Highland. To this latter complaint the Free Church would only reply that, humble In condition and poor as the adherents of the Free Church In the Highlands have always been, it waa the adhesion of the Highlands In 1X43 which gave the Free Church its na tional character, and the constant stream of Highlanders sent to the great cities of the south has largely contributed In abid ing source of strength, wealth and prestige to the church. On the more serious ground of complaint the facta speak for them selves." BISMARCK AS A PROPHET Japanese Resldeat of Antwerp lays He Foretold Awakealag of Islanders. ANTWERP, Sept. 10. SOCIALISTS MAKE- A MISTAKE Reject n Resolution Which Compels Then to vtaad Alone la Coateat. BRUSSELS. Sept. 10.-(Bpecial Cable gram to The Bee.) Opinion both In Bel glum ar.d Holland confirms the French view that the socialists at Amsterdam made a false move in rejecting M. inures' motion In favor of the Dresden resolution, tor which Herr Rebel Is responsible. The Dres den resolution elms at ths overthrow of all constituted authority whose elements belong to the bourgerlss or which has tlx tslnt of capital about It. Hence It also precludes the coalition of ths socialists with any other parliamentary group whose pro grams does not exsetly tally with their own. . This "ell or nothing" policy may appeal to the popular Imagination, but would be quite Impracticable in Belrlum, where the only chance for the socialists ties In their consent to maks common cause with the other nartlea of the Left. 1. VanderveMa was fuKy aware f this In Imposing the' present resolution, and his example will probably Influence many leading socialists outslds ef Belgium.
