The wht marketa are beginning ro net

Thla la the atory of the gosslpa. Naturnlly,
- with the burden of the refrain running

expected, but the action of prices today
waa not In that direction Indeed the

Wheat receipt fell off In Omnha and
there wna aome little diminution In the de

relatively. No. 2 wheat teatlng under 60

shipper ha no right to expect anything
but a low Price, much below that actually

NEW YORK. Aug. 2-There la little to
be Haiti tor todays stock market, 'trading
during tne greater part 01 tne brlct n-s-elon
was dull and mrrow and tne ton
run rather irregular. London vent lower
prices and renewed activity In the commod
ity markets and this probaoly accounted
for the attitude of the trading element. A
private estimate- that the wneat crop is
likely to tall am.Oui.mW bushels below that
of 1901 and very much below that of last
year commanded serious attention In many
quarters.
The monotony of the day was enlivened
by gossip that L'Dlon Paciilc and Missouri
l'acnc were to engage In, rate cutting tor
ateel products, aio of a reported tight
between the l'tfltcl States Steel corpoia
tlou and the Colorado Fuel and Iron com
pany. Humors of a strike on the local ele.
valed lines were authoritatively denied.
There were fractional declines at the open
ing In St. Paul, L'nion Paciilc, Atchison and
Norfolk & Western. The -polnt break In
Canadian Pacific waa natural In view of
the proposed stock increase. The lists
steadied somewhat after the early reaction,
under the lead of St. Paul, which waa taken
In large amounts. Reading also came In
for some attention.
The publication of the bank statement,
showing a much smaller loss of caah thin
had been anticipated, was of sentimental
value, even though the statnmeiit was
based upon the so-called system of de
clining averages. Trading became rather
animated In the final dealings, with prac
tically all the active list sharing In the
upward movement. The market dosed Arm.
with prices In some Instances better than
the previous day's close. St. Paul maxla a
net gain of 1 and Heading 1 points.
Another telegraphic transfer of 5rfl,ono to
ChUago was mitde by the subtreuaury.
Total sales of bonds, par value, were

CATTLE There were about twenty-one
curs reported this morning, but eignteen
were consigned direct to local packers, n
there were not enough on sale with wnlch
to make a test of the market. For tne
week recelots have been light, there be
ing a decrease as compared with last week
amounting to about 3,uoo head and aa com
pared wltn the same week of laat year the
decrease was about th same. With a
fairly liberal demand the tendency of
price has been decidedly upward on all
kinds. . . .
There has been a liberal sprinkling of
cornfed steers in the offering all th week,
but evidently there wera not enougu to
meet the requirements of the traue, aa
price ruled strong practically all the week
and a net gain aa compared with tho close
of last week amounting to 15fc25c In noted.
The demand seems to be greatest for well
finished heavy cattle and least for com
mon light cattle. The pretty good grades
of cattle and the choice ones have shown
the most Improvement. Oood to choice
enrnfed steers mav be quoted from 85.60 to
16; fulr to good, Jo.0ixyti.60; and the com
mon to fair, from 14 to 14.90.
For the time of year the supply of west
ern grass beef steers has been very light,
and with a fairly liberal demand the mar
ket has improved, if anything, more man
In the case of cornfed. As a general
thing the murket Is right around a quarter
higher for the week, some kinds being a
trifle more than that and others not quite
so much. The pretty good grades have
shown the most Improvement. The bulk
of the steers now Bell from 13.25 to 11.
with common stuff from 13.25 down, and
strictly choice from 84 up.
There was a better demand for butcher
stock last week than at any time since the
beginning of the. strike, and with moderate
receipts values movea upwara at a rupiu
rate. Tho advance for the week amounts
to 25'80c. As would naturally be expected
with such a rapid advance, there Is con
siderable unevenness, but all kinds have
Improved. Ther Is some demand for
cannera and cuttera, but still the call for
that class Is limited. Most everything be
ing offered comes from the western ranges,
very few cornteos oeing onereu. some
thing choice In the way of cornfed cows
would probably sell from 13 to 83.50, while
choice jielfera might reach 14 or a little
better. The bulk of the gras cows sells
from 12.26 to 12.75, with choice grades at
13 or a little better, and canners and cut
ters from 11.75 to 12.26.
Rolls have Improved to some extent dur
ing the week In sympathy with th advance
In steers and cows. Cornfeua are scarce.
but sell from 13 to is.txi, wnne grassers go
all the way from 11.75 to 12.50. Veal
calves have not changed much and aell
from 14 to 15.
The aunoly of stockers and feeder was
mora liberal last week than for aome time
nut and the demand from tne oountry
also showed much Improvement. A a re
sult an active snd stronger market was
experienced until the close of the week,
when, tha snm aa usual, there was some
weakness. As compared with th close of
laat week, however, tnere is a net gain 01
10ffl5e. Oood to choice grades may be
minted from 83.40 to 83.75: fair to good.
13 to 18.40, and common stuff, from 13 down.
