House trade with Omaha Jobbers snd
manufacturers was more brisk last week
than It has been at any time since last
spring. The special railroad rates for the
benefit of merchants brought large delega
tions to the city, and besides that n.any
stopped off on their way to St. Louis.
Their orders were large and numerous In
all seasonable and staple lines. An a gen
eral thing they had a favorable word to
say regarding the outlook for future busi
ness, and while they realise that considera
ble warm weather la needed to make a good
corn crop, they feel confident that fall and
winter business will be of very satisfactory
proportions.
Besides attending to their house trade Job
bers had large numbers of orders from
their traveling men to fill. Mall orders
direct from merchants were also quite nu
merous, so thnt taking It altogether the
total volume of business was large for this
time of year.
The markets have fluctuated to some ex
tent during the week, and particularly Is
that true of groceries. Most lines, though,
have not changed to any great extent and
the general situation Is described by calling
values on a good, firm foundation, with
Indications favorable for their remaining
firm In nearly all cases for some time to
come.
Collections are not as prompt as they nave
been nt some times, but still no serious
complaints are heard. The better move
ment of live stork Is Improving the situs
tlon to some extent and small grain will
also doubtless be marketed quite freely
In the near future, which should take con
slderable cash to the country.

Wholesale grocers report the demand for
their lines as being as large as could
reasonably be expected. The market Is also
In a good, healthy condition. During the
week under review the sugar market has
changed very little, so far as refined
grades are concerned, but rnws are a little
firmer. It Is reported that refiners are
getting well caught up with their orders,
but they expect a heavy movement of new
business this coming week. The Question
of freight rates Inst week caused some of
the larger buyers to hold ofr. but now
that' difficulty has been settled satlafac-
torllv and Jobbers expect a heavy demand
from now until the close of the canning
and preserving season.

s short time ago, owing no doubt, to the
favorable corn weather experienced the
greater part of the time for the lost two
weeks. They seem to feel now that a fair
corn crop Is practical! v certain while a
record breaking crop Is not at all Im
probable. The market for cotton goods Is In much
the same position It was a week ago the
pnly change being a reduction of 2 cents on
eadlng brands of fancy prints. Attention
Is called by local jobbers to the fact that
many lines of cotton goods are selling
cheaper than they were three years sgu,
long before the scarcity of cotton devel
oped. That being the case they do not
see how prices can go any lower, but on
the contrary, they ' consider such lines at
present prices good property.
Wire Kails Inset tied.
So far as the market on wire and nails
is concerned there has not been much '
change since the weakness which was re
ported a week ago. Jobbers are rather
Inclined to think that the reductions made
at that time will be of a temporary char
acter, as they were brought about, not
by a reduction ln the cost of production,
but through competition. The disturbing
element at this time Is the rather H.
moralized condition of freight rates on
this line of goods. It Is Impossible at this
time to state what action will finally
be taken by the railroads and until an ad
justment la made which will be satlfactory
to nil concerned the market will be rather
unaettled.
Other lines of hardware are) selling In
Jnat nbout the same notches they were a
week ago and no lrnportant changes are
being predicted for some time to come.
It is what Jobbers call a good, healthy
market.
Trade conditions are also very satis
factory. The movement of fall goods Is
brisk and covers the entire line. Trade
so far on all goods has been equal to
last year's good record and consequently
Jobbers are not doing any complaining.
They look for a continued brisk demand
throurhout the fall and winter season.
In the line of farm Implements a good
demand for wngons Is reported, although
there Is some tendency to hold back until
something more definite about the final
outcome of the corn crop Is known. With
a good crop n heavy movement Is antici
pated. Shovel boards are also selling to
good advantage. For this season of the
year there Is a srood bupe-y trade, the same
as has been the case all the year.
The demand for plows Is also good, as
considerable fall plowing Is being done and
more will be done before the end of the
season. Implement men state that so far
as their fall 'trade Is concerned they have
very little cause or complaint.
leather Goads Fairly Active.
The demand for leather goods showed
some Improvement last week, the same as
was the esse ln almost every line. Quite
a good many merchants were In the city
and bought freely. Home of them state
that they have considerable stock on hand
carried over from last winter and also quite
a lot of summer lines on hsnd. while
others are well cleaned out on all kinds.
In other words, the trade has been a llttlo
spotted, but at the same time the outlook
for the future Is considered very favorable
for both wholesalers and retailers.

In popularity. Merchants are taking hold
of them froelv and find thev meet with fa
vor In the eves of their customers. Omnha
Is getting to be quite a shoe manufacturing

There have been no changes In the
leather market to -speak of. Trie same
as prevlouslv mentioned the comparative
eosrdtv of hides due to the packing house
strike baa nut the leather market on a
good, firm basis.
Fruits and Vegetable?.
The demand for fruit last week was agnln
very heavy for even this time of the year.
There never haa been a better trade on
fruit, ln fact, than has been experienced
so far this season. The abundance of all
kinds of fruit, together with the ressonable
prices charged, are no doubt responsible in
