M. Pellen, a racking- house striker, and
wife were struck by Union Pacific passes
ger train No. 11. the Colorado special, at
a point about half a mile cant of Avery,
about three and a half miles couth of
South Omaha, at 8:10 yesterday morn
Ins and Instantly killed.
Mrs. Pellen had been along the track
near Avery picking- up coal and her hus
band waa on bla way to meet her. Pellen
was on the east aide of the new iron
bridge over Mud reek, while his wife waa
on the west aide coming towards him.
The passenger train runhed around the
big curve at a high riae of speed and
struck the man, whose attention was un
doubtedly attracted to an eastbound freight
train en the eaat track. lie waa thrown
high in the air and nearly off the rlght-of
way.
Those who witnessed the accident say
that Km Pellen saw her husband struck
by tre train and seemed to be spellbound
At "? raw she did not make any effort
to Juirp to the aide of the track. When
the pilot of the engine struck her she
waa thrown probably 70 feet and landed
Hear the fence along the right-of-way.
People Rath to Scene.
In a few moments those residing In the
Ticlnlty were on the scene. Sheets were
procured from neighboring houses and the
badly mutilated bodies were covered,
pending the arrival of the coroner.
A message was sent from Avery to Dr.
Armstrong, the coroner, at Papllllon, and
he arrived shortly before 10 O'clock. After
viewing the remains the coroner tele
phoned to South Omaha and notified Un
dertaker O. II. Brewer to take charge of
the bodies. The Inquest will be held at
Papllllon at 9 a. m. Friday.
Pellen was' about 50 years of age and
his Wife about 48. H had been employed
as a laborer In one of the packing houses
at South Omaha but waa on strike. The
couple lived in a small cottage in "Buff
town," a small settlement between Avery
and the South Omaha city limits. The
couple leave nine children, the youngest
being 18 years of age.
Arrangements for the funeral will not
be made until after the Inquest Friday.
