fldence was seneibly shaken by the sctinn
of iO'iy s stock market, which gave the
first indications of ur;nt liquidation since
the recent rise was inaugurated. Up to
this tlrr.e the action cf the market bee sll
been to show a firm undertone, even after
the evident culmination of the rise and the
adoption of a waiting attitude by the pro
fessional operators who had followed the
advance. Today on the contrary the un
dertone was weak. Thug the greeter activ
ity throughout the day was during the
ferlod of declines. Cm thai occasional sales
here wss a quick lepse Into dullness.
A retrospect of the common Inferences
to be drawn from yesterday's violent rise
In sterling echang, the. jump In London
discount rates and the' strength of the
wheat market took on a formUiable aspect
to the minds of operators in stocks, al
though, the sterling market was quieter
today. 'Wheat opened essler and the Lon
don discount msrket was more settled.
Nevertheless grave fears were felt that the
Anfrio-Hussian friction might Issue In some
oveit act cf hostility that would start an
International cmfisgratl.n In F.urope. A
widespread influence waa eierted both in
the wheat and stock market by an al
leged eatlmate by J. i. Hill of only 6SO,U0O,guO
bushels for the total whest crop.
A sudden break In Northern Securities on
the curb produced the weakest spot In the
market. Whispers of doubt continued to
circulate of the maintenance of the divi

CATTLEA half dosen loada arrived
this morning, besides a moderate number
held over from yesterday. The situation
la very uncertain and the demand very
limited
Beef steers constituted the bulk of the
supply. Packers were enabled to take a
few, and sales made were fairly satisfac
tory to sellers. The demand is, however,
very uncertain and of very limited propor
tions at this time.
A few -sows and heifers were offered, and
where they could be used by packers
prices realised were quite satisfactory.
There Is no demand, however, for cannera
and coarse stock, and the Inquiry for
butchers' stock oi! any kind Is very limited
gnd uncertain.
In the feeder division gome trading was
done, but the market is rather dull and
unsatisfactory even In that direction, and
prioes are lower than last week. The
country demand continue very limited.

HOGS Nine cars, about 900 head, were
received and besides there were about 6o0
bead carried over from yesterday. Pack
ers took on A few loads, but the larger
number sold for shipment. A fair clear
ance was finally made.
At the start shippers only were on the
market and they selected such as they
donlred at prices mostly 6 10c higher than
yesterday, or largely at $5.1(X6.15 for choice
liK'nt and medium grades or such as were
suitable for shipment. Later In the .day
packers took bold and cleared up the
heavier lots at prices Just about where
they were last Frlaay, or right around
$5.00 for decent offerings. The situation Is
not materially Improved, however, snd not
a great many can be handled as yet. Tops
today reached $5.20, or a dime higher than
yesterday, while the bulk also shows com
paratively wen.
