NEW TORK, July 2.1. A marked subsid
ence of suecuiative Interest was observed
In today's nuirket, partly aUubutabie lu
toe aiiort sesaion and the rush from the
city ior the cnuV o( the week holiday. Hut
the limit to tne preient active movement
waa pretty cleaiiy shown by the duiineaa
yeaterOay. 'J here whs the-same hexUutlon
of prices today, but the unilertutia wns
firm and there waa little pressure to sell,
simply a re.isallon of the recent Ifrge buy
ing In diftorent quarters -of the list. The
settlement of the Ruaaiari selsurea in the
Red sea seemed so well defined as to leave
li'.tle surface ground for uneasiness. It Is
probable, however, that some repressive
tifect Is stlli felt from the sudden poasmll
IHes of trouble developed by the incident.
1 tie only featuro in today s market , was
the spechil hritincas of Iron and steel stocks.
I nited rilatea bteel proterred added 3 to
Its weeks gain, and the stocks of the In
dependent companies made some sharp ad
vanffs. The stock market has been very Irregu
lar throughout the wek and Its occasional
strength lias been manifested In a very
spotty milliner. The Impression made upon
speculative sentiment, however, has been to
increaao coniidt-nco in the underlying
strength. Professional operators have lie hi
to an opinion that a normal reaction alter
the considerable rise In prices waa over
due and the attitude towiirds the market
has been one of constant suspicion. While
the week's market has ahowu many algns
of Instability and prices have wavered con
atatiily, the movement waa as constantly
stopped short on a precipitated decline. The
etlcl has been to Impress sentiment with
the strength of tha forces behind the mar
ket and to encourage hopes of an curly
redemption of tha advance. The small ef
fect produced upon prices by happenings
which ssein to have a posltlvs bearing
against values has the same encouraging
eitect. Tha moat notable features of tha
present rise In prices bus been the Indif
ference towards news ove!or,rnerjrs, '
At the meeting of the Northern Securities
directors the unceremonious refusal to even
consider a concllliutory proposition looking
to a settlement of tha dispute between
stockholders out of court gave strong
ground for. an assumption that the laaue
Joined between the two parties for the
control of Northern Pacific and of tha
northwestern railroad situation can only
be settled by the success of one or the
other party. There la no-questlon In Amer

Complalnta of dull tlmn are alwarg
heard st this seseon of the ysr In fact.
It would be regarded aa something en
tirely out nf the ususl course of events
If there should be a cessation of such com
plaints during the midsummer senenn. Julr
U always a dull month, but the weather
this year hns brointht about some changes
In the regular routine of trade.
The cool and wet weather during the
early portion of the aesson, which kept
back the forn crop, at first hindering the
planting and lster retarding tha growth,
served to make the country retail m"'
chants very cautious about ordering fall
and winter stocks of goods. The tendency
among them was to delay placing orders
until they knew more about the outcome
of the corn crop, which will govern the
consuming demand for merchandise this
fall and winter. Hence the Jobbing trad
haa seemed a little dull during the Inst
few weeka. Now that tha opinion appenre
to be general that thngs will be a good
corn crop In this section of the state, coun
try merchants are looselng up a little
and are beginning to buv more Trsetv,
lnirlng last week more country merchants
were noted In the city and more are ex
pected to arrive every day from now on,
unless there should be a change In the
present favorable outlook. It Is for this
reason that some of the Jobbera are hesi
tating about going on the trade excursion'
arranged for the nrst week In August, aa
they tigure that there will be so many of
their customers coming In shout that time.
Present Indications would all seem tr
warrant the belief that wherever there
was a slsc.k demand for merchandise esr.
iier In the season, the later demand will
be sufficient to fully make up for It. It
goes without saying that 1ohhre are ac
cordingly feeling quite well satisfied with
the present trade situation, in spite of the
fact that Just at present most lines are
rather quiet.
The retail trade of tha city has also fait
the effects of what mla-ht he termed in
aeasonsble weather. During the past three
or four weeks the continued cool and wet
weather discouraged the Bale of summer
goods and caused a good many complaints
to be registered as to the dullness of busi
ness In general. Merchants with stocks of
thin summer goods were the chief sufferers.
The hot spell a week ago seemed to start
up the demnnd and there has been more
life and activity noticeable around the big
stores during the Inst six days than for .
some little time back. The trade in men's '
summer wear, especially, has been decid
edly better.
The packing house strike hag been the
one disturbing element. While the direct
results might not be ao noticeable, indi
rectly the closing of the packing houses
at Bouth Omaha bas a very large bearing
on business conditions both In Omaha ami
Bouth Omaha. More than that, the stop-
page of the steady stream of money that
flows year in and year out from South
Omaha bRck to the fnrmere and stockmen
would before very long make Itself felt
In the country. From there it would re- ,
fleet back again to tbe wholesalers anil
Jobbers of the city.
Money continues easy and Is readily ob
tainable on first-class collateral. - Building
operations are being carried on quits ex
tensively and. taken all In all, the general
business aituatlon la very encouraging for -the
midsummer season.
