It Is presum able that the attention of the British gov ernment will be directed to a movement conducted officially by- the Canadian gov ernment to Induoa Immigration "from the United States to the northwest territory. It appears that the dominion Department of Interior, through one of Its assistants, has been sending broadcast throughout the northwestern states circular letters, prin cipally addressed to clergymen, profes sional men and persons of Influence de scribing in glowing terms the splendid resources of the Canadian northwest and Inviting Immigrants by the offer of 180 acres of land for eaoh, free schools and sound laws. LYONS MAN WILL BE TRIED IN FALL Cfaanares Plea of Gnlltr to Hot Gnllty and Jadae Hnngtr Remands Hit Case to Fall Term. James F. Miller of Omaha and James Brink of Lyons were arraigned for sentence before Judge Munger In the United States district court yesterday, the former on a charge of misappropriating money sent by mail, the latter for alleged counter feiting. Miller was sentenced to one year In the Dodge county Jail. Brink changed his plea of guilty to not guilty and the case was re manded for trial at the November term of district court. Brink was a printer at Lyons. A small quantity of sporting goods had been re ceived at the express office at Lyons for Brink on the C. O. V. plan and in order to get the requisite cash Brink undertook to make a 110 bill out of a tl bill and pass It on the agent, but didn't suocsed. He tried the plan on other Lyons parties with like results and then came his arrest. The raised bills were pronounced miserable botches. In ons Instance 'the bills were patched, with the figure "10" pasted over the "1," but the work was very clumsily done. In the other two cases he used sim ply an Indellblle pencil In marking the "10" over the "1" and the fraud could be de tected at a glance. Friends of Brink held be was demented when undertaking to pass the bills. He had always borne an excellent reputation. Story of miller's Offense. James F. Miller waa charged with ap propriating an 3 draft from a letter and devoting the same to his own comfort and' convenience. The letter was addressed to one J. T. Miller and the similarity of In itials caused ths letter to be given to James F. Miller by mistake. The Miller the draft was Intended for was an East Omaha man, and the money was sent him from Denver to pay his expenses out there to accept a position under the sender of the money The East Omaha Miller had gone to Denver at hi own expense In the meanwhile and upon Inquiry of his employer discovered that the money. had been sent aad the draft returned endorsed and paid to another Miller. The poetofflce Inspectors were put oa the Job and soon James F. Miller waa under arrest. He denied his guilt at first, claim ing he had been In correspondence with Denver parties along the same line of em ployment and he supposed the draft was Intended for him. The grand Jury thought otherwise, however, and Miller was In dicted and before the case came to trial he changed his plea of not guilty to guilty and he had been In Jail since, awaiting sentence.
