Wheat took 4 pretty tumble today, not
only on the local market, but generally.
Demand her a much lees than yester
day and eaally lUmpul aa tooor. Withal
tha market was permeated by the same
somnolence that has marked the 'change
for tha last aeveral daya. That business
will pick up considerably after the Fourth
of July la believed by all the habitues of
the floor In both Omaha and Chicago.
The government crop report, detrimental
to wheat, coming as It did, brought Strang
pressure to' bear In slumping tha market
aiter a strong opening on manipulations of
the scalping Interest and professional In
terests at Chicago..
All through corn and oats held firm and
corn seemed Inclined to ba stronger If any
thing. Hera the bearish aatuie of tha gov
ernment crop report, which showed rapid
growth, especially In tha lake region, was
lelt but little and corn waa saved from go
ing lower In sympathy with wheat. '1 he
government reported that weather In the
Mississippi valley had Interrupted the
growth of wheat, more particularly In Mis
souri and Kansas.
Without making a single exception It msy
be stated,, and safely, that the market
here aa well as elsewhere was quiet and
very much so. Locally there waa some de
mand for corn at the opening and that
grain held strong. Soon, however, the de
mand was satisfied and on the prospect of
fair weather In Nebraska and the south
west on the forecast Ionics and holder be
gan to realise and a reaction came to lower
valuea.' Later and toward the close on a
strong unicsgo market corn held firm.
In the meanwhile wheat went with corn
and literally slumped and failed to react
wun tne more cosrse grain.
"It's a good time for grain speculators
to go fishing," remarked E. C. Twajnbley
of Twainbley, Son Co., aa he bulled
the July oats up 1 cent within three min
utes' time, sendln it from 37Ae to 2814c.
The weather map showed clear weather
In Kansas and general rains in the Ohio
valley. Light rains were experienced In
Missouri during the past twenty-our hours
and Nebraska was generally cloudy. The
forecast, however, Is fqr fair weather In
this state tomorrow, . '

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
July Holiday Proepeota Already Baring
Their Influence.
CAUSES A PARALYSIS IN THE TRADING
Very Few Storks Develop) ganteleat
Headway to Clear the Cost of

a Tats
NEW YORK. June 8. The current dearth
of orders for execution In the stock market
prompted Stock exchange authorities to
order the exchange closed for the short
Saturday session preceding the Monday
(July 4i holiday. But It appears that this
recognition of the scarcity of business is
having some aggravating effect on the
dullness. Professional operatora are ha
bitually disinclined to enter upon specula
tive rommltmenta on the eve of a holiday
on account of their feeling that any sudden
occurrence calculated to atlect tne maraet
violently would leave them at a dlswdvsn-tas-e
in the nrolnnaed interval, with no
market In which to take measures for thlr
protection or for their sdvantage. The op-
proacning triple noitaay was wiaeiy
credited with the paralysis of the trading
today.
The term staa-nant Is hardly a figure of
speech when applied to the market. Many
stocKS usually prominent were noi uran
In at all and those which were drifted Idly
U ud or U down. Very few stocks de
veloped sufficient headway to clear the cost
or a brokers commission on a turn, in?
yearly report of the Cleveland, Cincinnati,
Chicago A St. Douls presented as contend
ing Influences the Inroad upon net earnings
by reason of the heavy increase In operat
ing cost and the sanguine hopes expressed
hv the nreaidpnt of the comnanv of ad
vantage to accrue next year from retrench
ments, i s IK or retrenenmeni on oiner
lines, notably the Baltimore Ohio, and
reported heavy reduction In the working
force by a large locomotive company were
regarded as Indicative of business contrac
tion. Conclusions to be drawn from the
weekly crop bulletin proved rather baffling,
but the fall in wheat left no room for
much disturbance over the crop situation.
An advance in the price of refined sugar
met no response in the stock market.
The dwindling of the bond market is a
disappointment to those hoping for Im
provement starting from that department.
Movements of many dormant Issues sug
gested an Investment search, - but the
usually active list of bonds shows soms de
clines In prices and a number of gaps
where no transaction at all is recorded.
Total sales, par value. $2,096,000. United

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning
were not at all excessive at any point,' and
as a result the market held fully steady.
Ail the buyers seemed to be In need of
fresh supplies and everything here - was
disposed of in. good season.
The market on corn-fed steers could be
auoted steady to strong. Inferior cattle
id not show any improvement in price.
tnougn it may nave oeen a little easier
to sell them than has been the case of
late. The more desirable kinds, however,
commanded a little stronger prloes. As
high aa 36.10 was paid for some well
finished heavy cattle. Trading was not
exactly brisk, ns buyers did not like the
Idea of paying strong prices, but still a
good clearance was made by the middle
of the forenoon. A shipment of Montana
grass cattle arrived, part of which were
good enough for killers, and they sold at
very satisfactory prices.
The cow market was also steady to
strong. Anything desirable sold without
much trouble at stronger prices than were
paid yesterday, but the medium and com
mon kinds were more or less neglected
and could not be quoted any more than
steady with yesterday. There were only a
few in the yards and they sold in good
season.
Bulls, veal calves and stags all sold at
fuly as good prices as were paid yesterday.
Aside) from the Montana cattle referred
to above there were very few cattle in the
yards. The desirable grades could be
quoted just about steady with yesterday,
while the cemmon kinds were slow and
uneven, the same es has been the case for
some time past. Representative sales:

HOGS There waa a liberal run of hogs
here this morning, and as Chicago was
quoted generally a nickel lower, prices
here eased off Just about that amount. At
the opening some of the packers and ship.
rers went a rim rid and picked out the bet.
er grades at prlca only tlific lower, but
after that was done the market was right
around a nickel lower. Trading, though,
was quite active at the decline, so that
in spite of the liberal receipts practically
everything whs out ot first hands by Jl
o'clock. The bulk of the good weight hogs
sold from 35.10 to 86.124s, with t tin choice
loads from 35 15 to 35.30. The lighter loads
sold fTom 85.10 down. There were a good
many light mixed loads on snle today thai
were rattier lacking In qualltv, and thnae
rather hurt the appearance of the market
on baper. Repraaentativaales:

SHEEP There was a talrly liberal run of
sheep here this morning and while some
stuff sold close to steady the tendency was
undoubtedly downward and packers shut
down before everything waa disposed of
and were bidding arouna a dime lower than
yesterday for what was left. The Idaho
wethers and yearlings that sold yesterday
for 34.46 straight were a shade lower today.
The yearlings brought 34-55 and the wethers
34.30, the yearlings being a dime higher and
the wethers 15o lower than the average yes
terday. There were also some of the weth
ers on sale today that brought 34 40 yes
terday and today they sold for a nickel
less.
There was practically nothing on sale In
the way of corn-fed stuff with, which to
make a teat of the market.
The close of the sheep market waa slow
and weak, sales being made fuly 16c lower
than yesterday's market. Oregon ewes
sold for 33.86 and Oregon yearling ewes
and wethers brought 34.60.
