4 TITE OMAHA DAILY BEE: THURSDAY. JUNE 10, 1004. WILL BRING SE1YEY HERE PICA. " Oirto r4mt!on Gtti Poftponamint sf Draniioa Cass, Awaiting Fonntr Chisfc LOCATES DETECTIVE ALSO TO TESTIFY XL O. Brtnt Declares lie Will Prove These Mci'i Testimony that of Former Is Jfr--'- 'An unexpected development In the Den Blaon case yesterday caused the court to adjourn the further hearing of the evi dence until June 27. at which time the counsel for the Civic Federation promise a sensational discloeure as to the time that Peonlson In purported to have been under the surveillance of the detectives In this city. Under the rule of procedure It was neces aery for the counsel asking that the case be continued to show good cause for the re quest and to outline to the court what they would attempt to show. In this con nection II. C. Brome said he had succeeded la locating Mr. Seavey, who was the chief of police in Omaha at the time of the Pol lock robbery, and by him would offer to prove that Dennison was not put under surveillance for several days after the rob bery and particularly until after November t, on which date It Is alleged Dennison was In and fled from Iowa, where be had gone to dig up the diamonds stolen and planted by Frank Shercllffe. Tim Vp Detectives Too. In this connection Mr. Proms Intimated that ex-Chief Seavey caused Dennison to be shadowed on the advice of the Pinkerton Detective agency In Denver, where, Brome aid, Dennison had a bad record. A Pln kerton man, Mr. Brome said, was also sent to Omaha at this time and shadowed Den nison at the time he was shadowed by the Omaha detectives. This Plnkerton agent also has been located as now living In Pennsylvania and will be brought here to testify as to the time he was looking after Dennison and to prove by his evl dence that the surveillance was not begun until several days after the robbery, and that, therefore, the evidence given during the hearing thus far by the Omaha police officers and others to the effect that Den nlson was constantly In their sight from and Including November t Is perjured. The offer of this evidence and the con tlnuanco of the case was most vigorously opposed by Dennison's counsel, and the matter was argued pro and con for nearly the entire time of the morning session of the court. 8. H. Cochran, one of the counsel for the petitioner, and who was counsel for Frank Bhercllffe at the time he was convicted of the Pollack robbery in Iowa, was put upon the stand to show that Dennison paid him no money for the defense of Bhercllffe. as has been charged, but that his fee of $760 was pald'by a man named Hooker. He said, on cross-examination, that Dennison and Hooker were both In Logan, la., during Bhercllffe's trial. Aooordlng to the statement of C. Leaf, who has a store at 1434 South Thirteenth street. C. Landre called at his place of business Tuesday noon and explained that he was an agent for mandolins which he old for $2 each, providing the purchaser would agree to take thirty-two lessons at the nominal price of CO cents a lesson. 1 Leaf bought one of the mandolins and paid the price, but when it came to the contract for the thirty-two lessons Leaf remembered that he had been saving for time of need Smith's "Mandolin Taught Without a Master," so there was no need of Landre's services and Leaf so Informed the visitor. As the instrument la said to have been old with the understanding that Leaf would take the Instruction, trouble seems to have resulted when he refused to take the lessons. Landre, It appears. Imme diately was placed on the defensive and told to 'hike," which he did. Just what happened in the store has not yet been learned In detail, but there Is no question that Landre mover with much rapidity toward the Comenlus school, a few blocks away, and entered the seat .of learning with fear and trembling. He met Janitor Oleeelman in the hallway and asked to be locked up in a room, as he was being pursued by a man with evil designs and large fists. 'As soon as Landre had. been placed In hiding Leaf and Officer Mansfield brought up the rear, Leaf with a determined look and the pa trolman with a drawn revolver. The officer expected to meet a bold, bad man from the foothills, according to the specifications given by Leaf, but Landre offered no re ssBlance and tried to sell the officer a man dolin and thirty-two lessons at GO cents each. Officer Mansfield arrested Leaf and Lan dre on the charge of disturbing the peace by fighting. The Omaha correspondent of the Lincoln Star sends this story to that paper, in which it appeared Tuesday: With each day's proceedings there comes some new feature. The Dennison case has even made Its Influence felt in at least one of the prominent churches of the city, the St. Mary't) Avenue Congregational. Three weeks ago the Rev. Robert Tost, pastor of the church, preached a sermon on city politics, and Dennison and his sup porters came In for a goodly share of the sermon. Later Yost was called before the grand Jury to tell what he knew about the city and state laws not being enforced, and to the grand Jury he had a few things to say that would make interesting reading. Attorney W. J. Connell, who for several years was city attorney for the city of Omaha, is defending Dennison. He has for years been a prominent member of St. Mary's Avenue church, and it was In his home that Yost was entertained on a number of occasions after. the latter had been given a call. Another interesting part of the story Is that Judge Troup and Judge Day, who are two of the three jurlxts sitting in the case, are also members of St. Mary's Avenue church. Both have been prominent In the work of the church and they, as well as Connell, have listened to Yopt's sermons on law-breaking. While nothing nas been mentioned or tills in tne press, there are many people who have lieen familiar with 'the m rained relations that have resulted rom this peculiar com bination of politics, religion and law breaking. The tension was increased a few days ago. when Connell sent a letter to Rev. Mr. Yost, which the l itter read at the midweek prayer meeting. In which Connell requested that his name be stricken from the membership list of the church. Thus the case hns Invaded new circles, and with the progress of the hearing the reeling is expected 10 aeveiop mucn Ifc tlonal feeling.
