THREE HUNDRED CARS OUT THURSDAY
4jrala Mem ImIi for Dall Cuk Market
at Sharp Deella aad Lively
Speculative Boaljaas Ala
Lower. 1
' OMAHA.. Jun 10. 1904.
The new grain rates went Into eftvet to
day. There wu practically no buMiias on
the Grain exchange, either speculative or
cash. Shippers pent out everything t;iey
could Thursday and the billing amounted
to something like 276 cart of corn and 2o
cars of other grain. This comes out of
private and public elevators in this city
and Council Bluff and outs down the
Omaha stocks largely.
The new rata makes an advance for corn
to Chicago of about 4.6 cents and to St.
Louis of 2 2k cents. The effect which w.ll
follow this advance cannat be absolutely
foretold. In' the first place, . howevir. the
isnner wui receive just so much le lor
is gram. J He oountry grain dealers have
nown this riant alona- and It is
uougnt oy . must or the Omaha
men that all available grain has
been sent through this ciiy In
order to be handled east and south before
the rate went In. They therefore expect
small receipts from now on until nearly
time for the new grain to move. In the
speculative side of the market an all around
diop Is expected. This will not bectarge for
speculators have known for an ample time
what to expect. Corn futures have been at
a discount from the spot stuff. There Is
also thought to be but a very small and
scattering tone Interest, as the crowd did
not wish to Toad up before the change.
Little business In futures has been done
since In May and the July and September
grain has been dull. The market, however,
can now be expected to broaden out, for tbe
rates as now established are expected to
stand for a considerable time, perhaps a
year or. two. This will make trading In
remote futures possible. Local grain men
therefore predict for the market during
this month as a result of the new rates a
sn ail cash business at a reduction of about
4 cents and an Increasing speculative busi
ness at a slightly decreased figure
The range in prices of omn ia ttraln for

NEW TORK- June 10. Prices of tocks
moved upward today rather more de
cidedly and more comprehensively than In
any of the movements that have de
veloped during the week. The movement
wa rather obviously In professional bands,
but the operations of the day were of a
volume and of a concerted character
which made an Impression that they wer
In skilled hands and backed by re
sources that promised greater eflVcts than
the tentative and timid operation to which
the recent market had been restricted.
The movement seemed to be th result of
crystallized sentiment which had been
forming for several days of a mors cheer
ing kind over the general buslnsss out
look. Th test of the market will bs It abil
ity to absorb th stocks thus bought when
th effort Is made to take profits on tha n.
Th belief that th expected favorable otop
report would induce buying of securities
had to contend wtlh th apparent Indiffer
ence of th early grain market to the sup
posed complexion of th oomlng report.
A favorable impression was mad by th
evidence of confidence In the bond market,
by th oversubscription of New York Cen
tral debentures. There was a renewal
also of th new control of Ontario A West
ern to neutrallie possible competition by
that company In a manner similar to th
Reading and th Hocking Valley control.
The official figures of th subtreasury
operation have not yet reflected the full
payment of yesterday's transfer of $2,67,
0U0 on account of Japanese gold, but It Is
expected tomorrow's bank statement will
have the benefit of It In It cash balance.
Th movement of cash In New York In
this week, Including this transfer, seems
to be upward to $7,000,000. Renewal of
buying" made the closing steady at th
top level. Bonds were well taken on a
rlnlnr scale. Total sale. par value,
$2,410,000. United States 2s advanced and
the old 4s declined W per cent on cal'..

CATTLE There wa a small run of cattle
here this morning even for a Friday, which
makes the reuelDt for th week a little
short of last week and about 4,000 head less
than lor tne same week 01 last year. raca
ers, though, were feeling rather bearish
and evidently were holding back in me
hope that there would be a big run the first
of next week which would give them a
chance to break th market. Trading was
slow, but sUU the few cattle In sight
changed hands In fairly good season.
The beef steer market oould be quoted
teady to a little lower on all grades,
though th choicer cattl In most cases sold
at about yesterday' price. A compared
with the high time of Ui week th market
is now close to 100150 lower In extreme
cases, but a compared with the close of
last week the market I still right around
a quarter higher on anything at all desir
able tn th corn-fed line.
The cow market today wa very slow and
a little lower all around. Buyer appeared
to be very Indifferent and would take noth-v
Ing unless thy could get It for consider
ably leas money, but there were ao few on
sale that a fair teat of th situation wa
hardly mad. Cows showing th streets of
giass suffered the worst. As compared with
a week ago th better grades of oorn-feda
are still a Utile higher, but common kinds
nd grass cows In partioular ar oonsid
...hw lower. Commission men are advis
ing their shippers to look out for th grass
cows, a they are almost certain to slump
off In bad shape at most any time.
Bulls, veal calve and atags were no mors
than toady today and not very aoUv.
The stocker and feeder market wa again
very dull and weak. There were only a few
In sight and practically non were wanted
even at the decline ranging from 86c to 60o
an compared with a wek ago. Represent.

BHEKP There were not enough on sale
today to make a market and oonseuently
there la nothing new to report. As com
pared with a week ago. prices on anything
at all deslrabls In the way of coinfeds is
about steady and packers are unable to get
enough supplies to meet the requirement
f their trade. Common stuff, thousn. Is
not moving very freely, as none of the
packer seem at all anxious to take hold
of th thin grassers such as have come
forward, as they ar too soft and do not
carry enough flesh.

Th big Mississippi liver catfish at the
New Tork nqun'rliim, after It long annual
period of hibernation, took Its first food
thl year on May 13. Thl wa the first
food It had taken sine July 7, 1903, a period
of ten month and six days.
Thl make a record for th big catflxh,
and It would rery probably b found to
be th record for flshe In osptlvlty every
where. In each succeeding year since tt has
been her this big catfish ha In the hiber
nating season abstained from food for a
longer and longer time. It was received
In December, 1899. Th following littl tabl
how when in each year It stopped eating
nd when It resumed!

This big catfish I about thre and a half
feet In length and weigh probably about
seventy pound. It ha grown somewhat
in length ana in weignt sine it wa nrst
received. It la clean and fre from fungus
and In. good condition and tt ha now ap
parently a much vitality a wken tt first
came In.
This year, when finally tt Hftn to Uk
food, It came up for It with It normal de
gree of activity, and took thre medium
slxed eels, cut up Int lengths convenient
for It to swallow. On May 17 It wa eager
for food and It at four rather larger eel,
cut up for It Into suitable lengths; and It
now move about In It tank la Its accus
tomed manner.
In nature this big catfish wemld bury It
self In the mud In winter and ther lie
dormant until spring. Mud cannot be pro
vided for It here, because mud would chok
the pipe of the-tank, which la therefor
supplied with a bed of sand on It bottom.
The catfish rub and hollows thl out to
make In It a comfortable bed for Itself, and
thl sand also serves the good purpose of
helping to keep the big fish clear of para
site. ,
A the hibernating season approach the
big catfish settle down In Ita bed of sand,
and thr It will 11 motionless for weeks
at a tlm. It 1 not an uncommon thing
for visitor to announce that the big fish
Is dead; a In fact It might easily seem
to be, for Its respiration I at such time so
very faint that the movement of It gilt
cover could be detected only by those ex
perienced tn observing fishes.'
But, as has been seen, afttr months of
seeming llfelessness, the big catfish will
come up and begin feeding again, and re
sume tt ordinary manner of llfo Just a
though nothing had happened. It would
scarcely seem, however, that It could ever
surpass Its prtsent great tasting reoord.

In hi advancement ,
"I pn sorry," said the good man, "that
you ould have chosen ihat particular

the responsibility a journalist owsd to so
ciety, the Influence of one educated youth's
example upon others of his class, th tone
a writer Inevitably took from th char
acter of th Journals h worked for, etc
"And your untarnished ns ef self-respect,
my young friend," he concluded,
"will be worth mora to you, when you
reach my time of life, than all th salaries
an unprincipled employer can pour Into
your purse."
So Impressed was th neophyte with this
lecture In moral that h oalUd upon Mr.
Hearst th next morning cad announced
that h had changed hi mind about ac

and started to leave.
"Ah," said Mr. Hearst B seated a
moment please." And turning to hi sec

to Prof. X. T., present my compliments,
and say that I should be pleased to receive
from him a signed article of 108 word
subject aad treatment t be of hi own
choosing for the editorial pag of next
Sunday's paper. Inclose check for 1260."
"Now," h remarked, with a cynical
mil, as he bade hi caller good-bye, "you
oan for yourself what corns of that."
He did. Th Sunday Issue oontalned a

reflection of a good man's fame, and spread
