GENERAL DISTRUST AND HESITATION
One Aggravating; t'aase Is Renewal
f Lleoldatloa la Erie Utocks,
With Aeate Weakness
Resoltlng.
NEW YORK, May IS. The stock mar
ket was under pressure again today and
prices grsvltated to a lower level In an
Irregular way without much resistance.
The depressing causes were the quite gen
eral dletrust and hesitation reflected In the
business world and the rapid chsnges tak
ing place in the sources of the money
market by reason of heavy gold outgo.
A special SKOTavatlns: cause was the re
newal of liquidation in Erie stocks with
acute weakness resulting. Delaware St
Hudson had to contend with a poor quar
terly statement of earning-. Persistent
rumors of governmental proceedings
against the coal combination in contem
plation are an Influence on the group. It
Is probable also that the Interruption to
coal traffic on the lakes by the strike of
vessel men enters Into calculation. The
firmer tone for United States Steel pre
ferred carried It up a large fraction early
and had a cheering effect on the general
market. The weakness becsme generally
circulated by midday. The Saturday Dana
statement and the money outlook were
much discussed, and nothing was found
In the subject to, stimulate any advance
In stock nrlces.
The engagements of gold already msde
for export were only added to by i&o.u.
of which 15011.000 was for Thursday. The
foreign trade statement for April shows
a check to all our foreign exports In mer
chandise and Increased value of Imports,
which tends to restore somewhat the trado
bslance In our favor, thus relieving the
excessive pressure for exports or goto
Rsllroari earnings. reDorts of traffic off!'
dais and a reduction In the price of cop
per failed to offer any help to the stock
market and a banking failure in Macon
had a disturbing effect on sentiment.
United States Steel preferred again as
serted Its Influence on the market by Its
late advance of a point, with a rally in the
seneral list.
