NEW TORK. May 4 The counterpoise of
weakness In the Lulled States bteel stocks
against strength in Union lacihcs had
tne effect of holding the general market In
state of practical Immonlllty today. The
general movement was narrower and tn
market more neglected tuan at any time
since the present period of dullness set
In. Both ot the V nued states Bteel stpeks
touched the lowest prices on the present
reaction, the common getting below 10 and
the prelerred below ii. The second mort
gage bonds were reactionary. The disrup
tion of the Bessemer (.vre association was
the assigned cause of the selling, and there
were large transactions In the preferred
stock at different times. The obvious cause
of the advance In Union I'aclflc was tn'
giving out of a statement by the head of
the system expressing hopeful views of
the -business outlook, eieclally through
the west.
The day's engagement of gold of $1.7&0,OtK)
lor expert to Fans, bringing the week a
total up to 4.76o,U, while the subtreasury
paid out today J3,J7f,ono on account of
Japanese gold deposits at Ban Francisco.
The hardening of exchange which usually
follows the receipts of Japanese gold colors
tne supposition that remittances to feu-
rope are drawn against part of lhee receipts.
1 he day's weather map was a favorable
one for. crops, but the Missouri state crop
report VnodlfUd its effect. Southern Rail
Way was not helped by its good showing
of March net earnings, and KocX Island
preferred rose vigorously In spite of the
falung off of about onc-thlrd in the net
earnings or that system for the same
period. The day's changes in prices were
insignificant. Bonds were irregular. Total
sales par value S.100,0"0. United States

packers were extremely bee. list:. Tr.ey
claimed that this market has been too
high as compared with others ajid that
the mutton market was not in any too

cause the market was very alow tvnd
practically no business was transacted
