NEW YORK, May I. Rather a larger
volume cf official buslnes ws transacted
on the Stock exchange today than th
average done last week and fluctuation
wer rather wider. The specific cause f
th heaviness of the market were not easy
to discover, but the desire to see the oper
ation of the Panama canal pavment ter
minated hs an Influence In keeping senti
ment unsettled.
The additional call by the secretary of
the treasury upon government depositories
makes evident slso that the full amount of
the Panama purchase will be withdrawn in
effect, from government deposits with
banks. Another result of th additional
call on government depositories were the
release of government bond held for th
securities of these depOHlts. The effect
wss seen In the decline. In government
bonds today. Today's msrket missed th
utalnlng effect of the recent advancing
tendency In London, where the exchange
w closed for a holiday, while the more
Indirect effect of the Pari market was
depressing owing to the Russlsn reverse
on the Yalu river. Th weekly returns
showed no decisive Improvement In the
railroad traffic situation and the net earn
ings reported for March continued In good
comparison with last year.
The lockout of the Atchison machinists
was an adverse factor, although that stock
neid better thsn some other Pacifies Ex
pressed opinions by trade authorities' thst
urgent European demand fir copper was
probably satisfied seemed k" prompt th
selling of Amalgamated Copper. The coal
ers were hurt by rumors which later were
denied thst the attorney general hud in
contemplation an action against th an
thracite combination.
The money market wa unaffected by the
additional gold engagement. Th closing
tone of the market was easy and prices
were generally near the lowest of th day.
Bond were heavy In ympathv with

CATTLE Receipt of cattle at this point
were conoJderaoiy smaller tni morning
than they were a weea ago, but ai aome
of the other markets there waa a fairly
liberal run. buyers did not lake bold of
the cattle as lieely a they mlgnt, but
there wa very little change In the price
paid from those in ore at the close ot
iu.st week.
The big bulk of the offerings waa corn
fed steers and the quality was hardly up
to the standard of iaie. That perhaps may
account In a measure for the lack of en
thusiasm on the part of buyers. The mar
ket wa rather alow and generally steady.
Something tKat Just sillied buyer -ay
have been a little stronger, but aside trora
th more desirable loads the market was
only steady. Although receipts were not
at all excessive, the morning was well ad
vanced before a clearance wa mad.
Light-weight cattle of good quality con
tinue to be In tne greatest demand.
There were hardly more than a dosen
load of cow ar.d heifer tn th yards this
morning, and a all the packers had to
have a few, an active and strong market
was experienced. Some salesmen who had
some choice llght-welf ht heifer thought In
some cases they got oJjlOc more than they
oould at the close of Inst week. As high
as 14 2u and 84.26 was Dsid this morning for
heifers. Everything was aisposea 01 at ta
early hour.
Bulls, veal calvea and slag a. '. not show
Anv quotable change.
There were comparatively i. - siock cat
tle on al and the demand waa sufficient
tn nuia an active and etrong market. Cat-
tl of good quality weighing around 800
pound em to oe in ine greatest aemena
it the, present time. Representative galea:
BEEF STEERS.

HtKIS There wss M fairly liberal run of
hogs here today for a Mondny snd prices
continued their downwnrd course In syni
pathv with the decttrte at other points. The
market was rsther slow in opening, but
when buvers and sellers finally got together
on prices It was not long beforeMirarttcallv
everj-lh'ng was disposed of st a decllttg
of J-ist shout a nickel. Extreme Usht
weights, though, were very hard to dispose
of. as none pf the packers seemed to be st
all anxious for them, and as a result would
not buy them except st a low figure. The
bulk of the good hogs sold today from M.r
to 4 f. with Trim load selling from 84.0
to 84.70. The commoner kinds went from
$1.62 down. There was rery little change
In the market from start to finish. Repre
