(New Tork Her ald Service Special to The Bee. ) Joseph Scrogglns, a negro street sweeper, whose maximum weekly wage is tll.tl, was ac cused In the Harlem police court of beat ing his wife, and during the progress of the hearing admitted that he was worth st least (135,000 In bank deposits and real estate. Held In SLOW bail to keep the peace for sis months, Scrogglns unconcernedly drew a check, which he cashed, depositing the money with the city chamberlain. Then he returned to his task of sweeping One Hundred and Twenty-sixth street, earning for his dny fLZ7. That modest sum being added to hit worldly wealth, fie returned to his well furnished apartments, where be handed his wife a check for 110.000, the deed to a tene tnent bouse and half ths furniture of the home. She left him, according to agree ment, and Scrogglns retired early, so that he would not be late for his dally toil the following day. Scrogglns Is 41 years of age. Intelligent aod fairly well educated. He has been an employs of ths street sweeping depart ment for years, never receiving more than he doss now. Hll family Ufa was not altogether pleas ant and there were frequent quarrels. which culminated when Mrs. Scrogglns caused the arrest of her husband, whom she charged with striking hsr in the eye, Inflicting a severs bruise. When It was announced that Scrogglns must put up 11.000 as a guarantee of good behavior, his lawyer asked; "Will your honor take cash balir "Certainly." was the answer, "if you can furnish It" "Jedge, that man can furnish any amount of ball," Interrupted the complainant. He's a rich man. He's worth 1125.000, at least." 'Is this true?" asked the magistrate of Scrogglns. 'I don't know how my worldly affairs concern any one but myself, was the dignified answer, "but I will say for your Information that It is true." 'Where did you get It?" was ths next Inquiry. "Part of It I saved out of my earnings and part I made by Investment," explained the street sweeper. Accompanied by a court attache ha went te the bank, cashed his check for ths 1X000, and. expressing ths regret that the money would not draw Interest in the chamberlain's office, hs left It there. - In ths evening he gave his wife a check for 110.000 and ths deed to a tenement house, and they separated, with apparent satisfaction on both Bides. (Coryrlght by New Tork Herald Co.. 104.) NEW TORE. April 10 -h New Tork Her ald Brrvlce special te The Bee V-What ill undoubtedly be the most brilliant gath ering of club women ever he'.d in this coun try, not excepting the last convention st Los Angeles, will be the biennial of ths General Federation of Women's Clubs, which takes plsce In St. Louis ths week of Msy 11. Two hundred women will be ths rep- ntatlon from the greater city and New Jersey, all of whom will leave this city em ths "Federation" special on May 11. Owing not only to the fsct of Its being the open ing of the exposition, but slso beraure of there being an attendant train for social functions of an unusually interesting sort. It Is generally conceded that the affair will eclipse anything sver before held. One of the features of the convention will be the Louisiana Purchase day, when Mrs. Dlmlss T. S. Dentscn, president, will un veil the bronxe tablet which the Federa tion has presented to the exposition. George Jullsn Zolany of this city is the soulptor, and tba sentiment Inscribed upon the tablet is taken from Theodore Roosevelt's book, which he give credit for the splendid civ ilisation In the west today. It Is hoped also that John Hay, former ambassador to England, will deliver the addgess. On ' Tuesday, the opening day, the Wednesday club of St. Louis, composed of society women, will entertain st a re ception from 4 to o'clock, On Thursday, following the Louisiana Purchase day ex ercises, a large luncheon and reception will be given by the Board of Lady Managers of the exposition, while on Saturday the General Federation gives a reception to the delegates of the International Press congresa, which convenes in St. Louis at this time. Monday afternoon fourteen prominent society women of the city open their homes for receptions to the visiting delegation. Talk ef Candidates. Besides Mrs. Denton, who gives ths ad dress of welcome, other New Tork women participating will be Mrs. Frederic Na than. Mrs. Charles A. Dow, president of the New Tork State Federation of Women's Clubs, and Mrs. Ralph Traunt- man, while former Commissioner of Health Dr. Ernest Lederle and the present com missioner. Dr. Thomas Darlington, each will address the convention. Naturally, ths thing outside of the pro gram which most Interests the women Is the choice for president, as Mrs. Denlson soms two months ago stated that she would not be a candidate for another term. Just now Mrs. Robert J, Burdette of Los Angeles, wife of the well known humo:ist and preacher, and Mrs. Sarah Piatt Decker of Denver, are the most popular candidates. Each Is said to have a strong backing. Mrs. Burdette, being the first vies presi dent of the Federation, Is perhaps the log ics! candidate, but Mrs. Decker is said to possess qusliflcatlons for the position which the women cannot overlook. When Mrs. Rebecca D. Low of Atlanta was a candi date Mrs. Deeker was also running, but stepped down In favor of Mrs. Low. Next time, when there was a possibility of Mrs. Low's cot running, Mrs. Decker's friends wished ber to present her name. Mrs. Low subsequently decided to run and Mr a Decker would' not oppose her, although 'every one said, upon the first occasion, If she had allowed ber name to be used, she would have gone with a rush. Consequently the friends of each feel that their particular candidate stands good chances of winning. When asked to day if any New Tork woman stood any chance of getting the nomination Mrs. Dennlson said: If I knew of any New Tork woman who had any such Idea I should strongly urge her to TJesiit. I think New Tork women are too sensible to consider such a thing for a moment The office naturally goes to a western woman, or If to the east. to a New England woman. " Mrs. Charles E. West of Boston and Mrs. Ward, president ef the Massachu setts federation, are both said to be as pirants for the offloe. ent emperor end victim of the crime of a state of SuppreaeloB. "I have letters from my mother and from fny brother recognising our relation ship. Althoegh oa principle I aa little in clined to make use of these proofs, yet there kt no reason why" At this point ths manuscript ends ab ruptly, tmt contains etisugh to clear gway sll doubt of the rrlatlonshlp of the duke de Moray and Xapcleoa lit.
