13 ' TI1E ILLUSTRATED BEE. April 24. 1901 i a l 5 a 1. , . n I j V it & lit?) -! . r 7 DEGREE OF HONOR TEAM OF DEADWOOD, & XX .ili: Telephone Exchange (Continued from 1'ugs Eight.) flee wnn nlmont a year In building, and waa Blilppt'd to Omaha from the factory In octlonH. Forty-five men worked night and duy for three and ono-hulf months In BtalllnR It nnd maklnfr the thousands of connections nccccaary In ordiT to have It In worklnK order. While each Instrument Is Independent of all other Instruments on the board, yet every Instrument Is capable of belnjr connected with any other Instru ment by the mere Insertion of the two pl'iRS. A Klance at the picture, Hhowlng the front of a switchboard when business Is brisk, will jdve an Idea of bow the con nections are made. Hack of the board are the cables, made tip of the Individual wlrea, each by Itself, laid In perfect ordor and as thoroughly Isolated In Its operation as though there were but tho one wire In the whole building. It Is on tho switch board that the union Is made complete. The picture of the men making the con nections gives an Idea of the myriads of silk coveted wires that enter Into tho oper alon of the system. Another picture that will afford some further Idea of the ap parent confusion, and yet absolute order that Is kept of the wires, Is that showing where the workmen are cutting connections at the "stands," this being tho place where the wires lending from the switchboard are connected with the wires running to the conduits. Still another good illustra tion Is that of the workman testing the connections on the section of the board de voted to the operators' switched and the 'phones belonging to that particular sec tion. Each of these Illustrations shows a feature of the general workings of a telophone exchange, but a visit to the building would hardly give the Inquirer a more detailed notion, save of the Im mensity of tho plant. An Instance of the car with which the Installation at Omaha was made may be here cited: In prepar ing for the change It was necessary to complete and solder nearly tO.OCO permanent connections. When the "cut over" was complete and the Instruments hnd been transferred from the old to the new board, only ninety-two out of 6,000 Instruments Showed defects In connection, and Investi gation proved that the majority of these were due to a disturbance rather than to a defect. The adjustments are so delicate that a very little disturbance prevents their operation, but under the system any trifling Interruption Is quickly traced and remedied. To get back to the switchboard. Each operator has a certain number of Instru ments to look after. These are apportioned to her In a section of the board. On the horlsontal part of the board are the sev eral switches and signals by which she controls the Instruments allotted to her. On the lower part of the vertical board are the numbers of the 'phones she has to tbntrol, with the signal lamp for each. At .ve these are the multiple connections, bo arranged that at a glance she can, on the board Just put In, make an Instant connection for any number up to 10.000. By the switches, which are marvels of Ingenuity, she la enabled to tell If a con nection asked for has been gotten. If the line is In use, If the parties sre waiting, !f the conversation has been finished, and If one or the other has forgotten to hang tip the receiver when through. She also lias control for the connections with out-of-town exchanges, and in fact for every One of the myriad things that are ex pected of "Central." A new arrangement tias headpiece and mouthpiece connected. Bo that central ran always be heard as Veil as hear. The chief operator's desk Is so equipped that she can obtain a con nection with any section of the board at any time, and thus be enabled to have instant and continuous check on the ope rators.. The advantage of this Is ap parent The long distance switchboard Is is o j J y h fi k ft h tiiiropwiiiawiii Mr li L.JLvj "?- vr.'.-' Russia out of Manchuria: "We Ttave en forced the pledge of an Integral China. Now, will you maintain It?" Every Item that comes from North China Is read here with tho Intenscst interest. At the outset of the war It did not suit Japan's policy to have China engaged, lest Russia might seize naval bases on Chinese territory. With the Rusl8nn navy off the seas, what would bo the result if the soldiers of Vice roy Yuan Shlh Kal should dispute the re occupatlon by Russian troops of the terri tory south of the Llao river which Russia bad already evacuated? How many more trumps has Japan up her sleeve? We who wait In Tokio have learned to be surprised ,at nothing. ,ECTTON OF THE SWITCHBOARD AT A BUST HOUR, SHOWING! HOW CON NECTIONS ARE MADE arranged the same as the locsl board, al though smaller, and the switchboard of the American Telephone & Telegraph com pany is independent of the boards of the local company. Another Innovation is that It is no longer necessary to ask for "long, dlstnnce" to get either South Omaha or Council Bluffs connections. The local board takes care of all these now. The room In which the operators work Is said by experts to be the finest In the country, its appointments and equipment being up to date In every respect. One item, that of fresh ulr, may be cited. It Is easily apparent to any that so delicate and costly a piece of mechanism as a tele phone switchboard could not be exposed to the winds that sweep the streets of Omaha, therefore the windows in the ope rating room are never opened. To pro vide for the ventilation, fans supply air that has been washed by a sprny of water at such rate that the entire air of the great room is changed every eight minutes. . This Is only ono feature. The room from which the operators have Just been re moved Is to be added to the already com modious rest and lunch rooms the girls had st their disposal, and when the old switchboard has been removed the ope rators will have at their disposal quar ters a king might envy. What la true of the equipment here holds good through out the building. Roth the new and the old parts are necessary for the carrying on of the business of the company, yet so orderly and systematic Is It that a visitor entering the front door might easily believe the building deserted, save that he encounters employes parsing to and from on their various errands. War Correspondents (Continued from Tago Five.) the attitude of Japan toward Corea Is clear. She means to be the same kind of a friend to Corea thut Englund has been to Egypt As one of the negotiants In a good bargain, she expects both sides to profit by It. Itoth will. Corea Is redeemed to order; she is set on tho iathway to progress. She will have railroads and factories and schools, Just as Japan Itself has. Within a month Its plnce has been made secure. In tho defence of the rresent regime nil the strength of Japan will be sacrificed. The Corean emporor becomes what the khedlve is in Egypt-the figurehead of a definite, progressive policy- I ,hl right? In that connection one may only relate the principal subject which occupied the em peror and bis court during this p reseat winter, when his country was In danger. A great scandal was aroused by the fact that, yielding to the fascination of the process and of the prospective yellow gleam In his mouth, the emperor had had an American dentist make him a gold tooth. The geo mancers, upon whose geometrical wisdom the ruler depends for advise, said that the Imperial mouth had been profaned. There was only one way to restore the dignity of the royal house and of the empire, and that was to have the tooth removed. The geomancers had their way. Meanwhl'.e, the ' emperor of Japan, while considering the advisability of war, war measures and the raising of a loan, was planning how Corea should be brought into the field of active civilization. This contrast of men and of peoples needs no comment to a people who are educating Filipinos or building schools In Khnrtou-sj. What are Japan's Intentions after she has taken Port Arthur? In nothing does she show her hand before the card is called. "Scrupulously, amazingly, exasperatlngly correct," was the description of her whole . attitude In this war by a none too friendly foreign diplomat What if she should say to the other nations, after she had driven Rheumatism Tkt Trcitaeat Ihat Ht Cues Itwunt't of Cbraeic latall'i, Ihkoal Cetl.
