April lS.-Today waa an other day oi languid speculation and timid operations In stocks by a email contingent of pioiesalonal traaers, who were vt uoid enough to follow prices to any dlstanv from last nlgnt's level. The most conspic uous movement In the market was that In Kne, and tha accumulation of that ttock maae some Impression on tne general list. Ihe buying of Erie was unexplained. Ins early neavlness centered largely In the Pennsylvania group and waa due to tha announcement of the tlO.000,000 note laau by the Baltimore A Ohio. The aubtreaaury op.-ratlons Include both the i.sj ments for gold bars exported and tor Japanese gold Deposited In elan Francisco, and have netted to the banka SS.l'iit.Onii. Btaldea thla tha regular express movemente with tha In terior have been heavy for New York, eetl matea running to over S3,utv.0OO. The ex ports of grain for the week show a falling off from last week of sto.uOO bushels for wheat and 446.000 bushel for corn, indloat ' 'he contracted aupply of commercial bliie In the exchange market. The Bank pf England's policy In reducing tne discount rste this week Is believed to encourar the repayment of Ixindon obligations to Tarla and this would not relax the pressure on New York for gold to Paris. The London Statist said recently: "It Is highly desirable that the Immense amount of foreign money whloh has been employed In this market should be n -terlally reduced. It la a dangerous thing for a market like that of Lon-1 m to be de pendent to ao great an extent aa It haa been for four or Ave years on foreign money, which might have to be withdrawn at the most Inconvenient time." 'ihe demand, through the local packera, waa In good shape, and the market ruled active and steady to strong from atart to finish, everything being sold at an early hour. For the week the market Is higher on all grades. Wethers and yearlings may safely be quoted 15?5c higher for the week, while ewes are not much over a dime higher. It should be remembered, how ever, that ewe have been selling out of proportion with wethers and yearlings for some time past, so that Ihelr failure to advance as much ss wethers and yearlings this week Is not to be wondered St. bambi have advanced even more than sheep. They may be quoted a big quarter higher, some salesmen celling the market as much as 263oo higher for the week. This, of course, applies to the better grades of lambs, but still even the commoner kinds are conalderably higher than they were a week ago.
