Wanal.an, former democratic tiomlnf fr
cntifffH from this district, ha Wurwd
(mm Washington, where f r several day.
t has bm the ful ol W. R Hearst,
candidate for the democratic nomination
for president.. Mr. Manahan comes hark
n avowed Hrst advocate and In all like
lihood alii assume the n anagement of the
Hearst campaign In Nebraaka, though he
haa not yet mad such an announcement.
After saying that Mr. Hearat waa In every
way worthy to lead the democratic hosts
to victory. Mr. Manahan stated that Lan
uw county would aend a delegation to
th state convention Instructed for Hearat
and that the delegation to the national oon
tenlon would be for Hearat. It Is the Im
pression here, that Mr. Harat Intends to
arry on the aame kind of a campaign he
did In South Dakota and the frequent press
notice that he Intended to let Nebraska
alone and depend on Mr, Bryan to lea
the delegation for him. Is now believed to
have been unfounded. Mr. Manahan Is !
row n avowed candidate for district dele-
gate io the national convention. j
The statements of Mr. Manahan are taken j
by the reorgamser to be the reflection of
Mr. Bryan's Idea and they no longer doubt
but that Bryan Is for Hearat and will use
all of his influence to swing Nebraska In
line for him. Probably no man In Nebraska
stands closer to Mr. bryan than does Janie
Manahan When Mr. Bryan returned from
)iis European tour some time ago, Manahan
waa tofestmaster at the Loan banquet au.d
on all occasions he has been put forward
as a particular friend of Bryan.
Just what effect the Manahan announce
ment will have on the democratic situation
Is bard to say, but unleas Mr. Bryan has
all of his follower well In hand he can
rot turn tbem over to Hearst. When the
Xouglaa county democracy adopted Its res
olution favoring Hearst for the presidency,
T. D. Worrall, Dr. Hail and otners par
ticularly friendly to Bryan made state
ments that they wera not In favor of the
Nebraska delegation being instructed for
any one for the presidential nomination and
they intimated that Hearst waa -not the.
Irian. Since that time a:l Indications point
to Hearst as Bryan s candidate. This la
further shown In this statement which Mr.
Bryan will publish in his Commoner tomor
row ;
. Bryam Agalast Parker.
Mr. Cleveland s nomination la out of the
question, aitnough ha 1 tbe first choice
ol the plutocratic element In ths demo
cratic party. Mr. Olney ha removed him
self by hi advocacy of Mr. Cleveland
nomination, and Mr. Oorman's chance
seem reduced to a minus quantity by hi
f uiiura to secure the co-operation of dem
ocratic senator on the l'anama question.
Mr. Hitl la not a possibility, but ho haa
taken up the candidxcy of Judge Parker
In the hope of making himself tha "power
behind tha throne." As soine of tha dem
ote t a are considering Judge Farker as a
harmnnr" candidate, it la important that
the real nature of his candidacy should be
aamlned. He 1 first of sll Mr. Hill a

Hon. David B. Hill has a legislative record

position on public questions a record ao
antagonistic to the democratic party that
) refused to give any open support to
ths ticket In 14. and did not even disclose
until some two years after the election
bow be voted. In a letter written shortly
before the election he told a New Tork
republican that he had not decided what
be would do, concluding with the state
ment, "1 am a democrat still very still."
Mr. Hill made himself tbe champion of
Mr. Parker In New York, and It is not I
likely that he would do this without hav-
Ing an understanding with Mr. Parker

tlon It can be ssfelv taken for grsnted
that In cae of Judge Parker's nomina
tion and election V. . Hill would be tha
