OMAIIA, April 8. 1904.
Elections In Chicago closed the Hoard of
Trade, so that the market today was a
sort of orphaned affair. Speculative busl
neaa waa carried on In Omaha, but the
volume of It waa very small and the In
t.rest lacking. What Mr. Armour Is to
do to corn la the thing of aupreme Im
portance to Omaha talent Junt row. That
apeculative giant is reported to have char
tered a second steamer to convey 80,(i0
bushels mora of the contract corn to the
eaatern seaboard. This, with the chartera
of Baturday, allow for 840.KX1 bushela, more
than one-lhird of the contract stock in
Chicago. This shows that No. I Is to be
hipped out of reach. Liverpool has re
timed after the taster holidays ami corn
there opened unchanged thla morning. A
report that three cargoes of corn are re
turning from Kngland la counted.
I no Aiinenapona uour people are woraing
or a lower wheat market. They are not
11 pleased with the flour situation and
ope to , better tt by getting cheaper wheat.
Cash atuff In Minnesota went off 20 Mon-
y and May 2c. Bt, louib wires good re-
orts from Tenas, Oklahoma and soutti-
estcrn Missouri. Rains are Bald to have
elptd the wheat a lot and rain Is con
tinuing. Bprlng planting talk Is being heard
ow and Is taking some of the energy
from the market. Chicago rash wheat
market Monday sold some wheat at He
over the May and turned down bids for
'5,000 bushels at the same figure. Holdera
wanted ;o premium.

GENERAL MARKET SHOWS IMPROVEMENT
lalted States Steel Calls to Share
la the Day's StreasTth, bat Other
laterests Rrtray Strong;
Tone.
NEW YORK. April 5 The perturbation
reflected jesterday in the stock market, on
account of the I nlon Pacific's legal fight
to rcgnln Its former holdings of the .North
ern Pacific In the Interest of the Sicurltfcs
on-.pany, had largely subsided today. The
result was a speculative movement of more
breadth and more general Indication of
Interest than for a long time. That the
operators were largely those of profes
sionals was sufficiently Indicated by the
methodical manner in which they were
conducted, first one and then another stock
or group of stocks being taken in hand
and advanced to a higher level of prices,
th3 market showing a vast improvement
In tone.
I'nlon Pacific was conspicuously aloof
from the day's upward movement, but it
had no appearance of being in free supply
or being pressed for sale. United States
Steel prererred also failed to share fully
In the day's strength.
There was an enormous absorption of the
second mortgage bonds on a strongly rising
market, lhe day s news did not seem to
lay much part In the general movement.
Reports of ralna in the southwest may
have Induced buying of the grain carriers
In that section. The reports of railroad
earnings for the fourth week in March
which came to hand were distinctly better
nam tne recent average, especially in tne
southern and southwestern sections. Prices
of copper rose strongly both here and
abroad and the strong statistical position
In the trnde Is much dwelt upon. The
oral tractions as a group moved upward
without news.
The anthracite carriers wore Inclined to
ag on account of the supreme court do
clslon requiring the companies to produce
their contracts netore tne interstate l:om
meroe commission. Sterling exchange
moved quite decisively away from the
point of profit on the triangular gold ex
port operation both here and In Paris. The
market closed irregular and with the ef
fects of realizing aulte evident.
Bonds were active ann strong, except Tor
pome realizing In Union Pacific convertibles.

CATTLE There was a liberal run of cat-
tie here today, something over 200 cars
being reponed. The demand lrom both lo
cal packets and shippers wss heavy and
as a result an active and strong market
was experienced all around. The bulk ot
tne aesirap.e cattle was sold in good sea
son.
Beef steers made un a larare share of tha
offerings and -the market could safely bu
alio ted strong. The same as is generally
le case with a strong market, a good
many sales were fully 6iuc higher than
yesterday. Tidy, blockv cattle of arood
quality were picked up in a hurry at prices
safely a dime higher, while the general
run of the steers sold at strong prices.
Trading waa fairly active on most all
kinds, with the exception of the warmed
up stuff, ana considering the heavy re
ceipts, the market was In very satisfactory
i-uuuiuun.
The cow market was also active and
strong. Light-weight heifers continued to
be the most popular line In the yards and
.n many cases sold nigner tnan steers of
the same quality and flesh. They could be
quoted strong to a dime higher than yes
terday and the same would apply to light
weight cowa of good quality. Other cowa
were steady to strong, but tho market wns
quite active and a good clearance was
made.
Bulla sold fully as strong as thev did yes
terday and If of light or medium weight
they were a little higher. Veal calves sold
In about the same old notches.
There Were onlv a few bunches of stock
cattle In the ynrds and, with a good de
mand, the market ruled active, and strong.
As high aa 84.60 wns paid for some year
ling Gallowava, pnrt of which were year
ling bulls. That Is the highest price paid
for stock cattle In some ti-ne past, but the
oatle were also the best ot nnv that have
been here In many days. Representative
