unimportant position. Bothtooks showed
some signs of resistance to the declining
tendency which wa quite manifest In tha
general market.
The paralysis of the demand for stocks
was attributed today to th fear of a col

consenuent financial damage. ''Paper

are Intangible and In a manner .unreal, but
their wiping out Involves real losses for all
that. There la no mistaking the fact that
the ertormou contraction In securities aur
Ing the last year, amounting In aome caae
to tne practical wiping out or quoiaDie

tion of capital which would otherwise have
been available for productive employment.
Mistaken speculation amount to destruc

It was noticed that the failures in January
were larger than for any prevlou month
since May of 1900, except December last

Railroad earnings . were not considered

HOOS Receipts of hog were rather mod
erate at all point today and with a fnlrly
good demand the market opened active
and a little higher. Th advance here
amounted to fully a dime and there wa
very little change In the market fmm gtart
to finish. Salesmen were aa a rule satis
fled with the prices offered, so that every
thing changed hands In good- season. The
light stuff sold from $4.5 down, medium
weights from 34 0 to M.K. good heavy ho
from $4 85 to $4.90 and aa high a 34-K wa
paid for prime load
Today's advance gne a long way toward
making up the decline of the latter part
of last week and In fact th market I
now a little higher than It wag a week
