CHICAGO, Jan. JR. A sensational break
Df Jo occurred today in the prlne of May
wheat. Bales of millions of bushels for
May delivery by the Interest that had been
actively supporting prices wan the prime
(actor In changing a stroaif market Into
one of utter vraknem There waa a 111 tie

urgent demand from aborts at the opening.
May waa itW to l&lVfcc higher, at MTV'f

tart and the price rose to 9c. Hut at
this figure the wheat began to come out.
Tha selling was Increased by late Liver
pool cables, which ahowed soma weakness,
and also by the large world's shipments.
Tha climax whs reached on heavy sllng
fcy broker who were aald to be ncllng for
the. Armour Interest. In consequence of
this cha.ige of front on the part of the
leading noider the market started to break.
On the down-turn a sreat mnnv Hton-loa
orders came Into the pit and hastened the
aeciine. r.normnus quantities of wheat
were thrown upon tha market, the big long

this source advanced the price a cent.
Mora wheat came out. however, on the

Chicago reported receipts of 401 cars against
686 last week and 1.003 a year ago.
In consequence of the big break In wheat
the corn market showed surprising
wumigui. Anriuenuai nuying ny local trad

early part of the session. I,aer In the
day prices were unable to withstand the
ever strain caused by the slump In wheat
"Vfcnd an easier tone prevailed, although the

B"MiC, and after reacting to 4kt4.o. closed at
9e. Loeal receipts were 430 cars, 20 of
contract rraae.
i nere was a good demand for oata
inrnugnoui tne greater part of the sessions,
otrerings being well taken until nenr the
close, when the selling became too liberal
for the demand. A slight decline was ex-
f'eriencea late in the dsy and an easier
one prevailed at the finish. The bull leader
was again an active supporter of the mar
ket. Small receipts and an excellent ship
ping demand, were hull factors. Mav

The closing quotations on bonds are as
fellows:
ret-
NEW YORK, Jan. 2 The movement of
prices which had crept slowly upward since
lant fall until last Tnursday when they be
gan to advance raplijly on a large volume
of busineas turned backwards today and
showed net losses on the day's business.
The weakness was not at any time acute
and there was a period of positive strength
after the opening but this was palpaoly
availed of to sell stocks. The reactionary
tendency gained force as the day sdvanced
and the closing was weak. Many of the
leaning sioc.ks lost 1512 points, ihese in
cluded St. Paul and the Grangers, Pacltlcs
and Southwestern, and United States Steel,
preterrea. 1 hese declines are by no means
severe after so considerable advance as has
taken place, but the reaction was decisive
and unmistakable. There was not much
more news to aecompuny It than there had
oeen on me advance, which hud been ad
mittedly due to operations on the long
side. Including manipulative tactics of a
bull party.
What tmppened In stocks was very similar
to what Imppened In wheat. In that mar
ket the news of the severe cold In the
wheat belt and renewal of war rumors en
titled them to an advance. The modera
tion of an advance awakened the sus
picion of the traders that the big specula
tive Interests were unloading and a slumD
In wheat resulted. The same stato of
doubtful sentiment obtains In the stock
maiKet. The lack of any evidence of
share In the large buying by the outside
public helps keep the apprehension of the
professionals awake.
A matured consideration of the Saturday
bank statement did not help to reassure
the speculative mind. It is believed that
the rapid loan expansion Is due in con
siderable part to the holding of newly
Issued bonds as well as to transfers of
loans of trust companies to banks. The
question is raised whether the heavy ac
cumulation of funds In New York may not
be an Indication of slackening trade, which
wouia not tie favorable to an advance In
stocks. Precedent shows also that the' re
turn flow of funds to New York Is likely
to come to a stop by the end of January
while the expansion of loans is likely to
continue Into February and even Into
March with New York bank loans In ex
cess of any previous record by $16,000. WO.
v easnesa In the copper market, a stock
brokerage failure In Baltimore, one or
two minor banking embarrassments else
where, and several reports of decreased
earnings of railroads for December ng
gravaled the downward tendency. People's
Gas rose on the decision by the court in
favor of its contention against the city
of Chicago's right to fix a 75c rate for
gas. The points of Btrength in the market
were due to special causes and the gains
were generally y.ieiaea Der ore me oiose.
Bonds were active and Irregular. Total
sales, par value, $4,086,000. United States 2s

Cotton Market. .
NEW YORK. Jan. 26.-COTTON The
market opened firm at an advance of about
26 points, which was hardly a full response
to the sensational advance In Liverpool.
In addition to these cables, receipts for
the day promised to be light, and while
tremendous liquidation was attracted, the
market after some little Irregularity ruled
generally Arm. The local bull leader, who
was believed to be selling, on the call,
turned an aggressive buyer and there
seemed a good demand of a more or less
general character. The market developed a
strong upward tendency and before the
advance waa checked March was selling
at 15.14c; May, 15.43c, and January. 1d.42c.
The advances locally were big, enough to
cause a temporary halt. In the late mar
ket trading again became dull, with the
bull leader an active bidder, and prices
reaching a new high level for the day.

SHEEP There was a moderate run of
sheep and lambs here this morning snd
as packers were getting low on supplies
they were all liberal buyers. The market
could safely be quoted a big dime higher,
or 10l5e higher. Quite a number of the
trains were late In arriving, but every
thing that came In eorly was soon dis
posed of. The quality averaged up about
as good aa usual, but still there was noth
ing exactly tanoy on sate wnn wnicn to
make a high top to the market.
There were very few feeders offered, but
the market could safely be quoted steady.

CATTLE There
of cattla In Bight this morning aa compared
with the receipts of late. As a result there
was a, better tone to tha market and tha
tendency of prices waa upward at all points,
Trading waa quit active, bo that every
thing on sale waa soon disposed of.
The market for corn-fed steers could
safety be quoted active and strong to
dims higher, the greatest advance being on
tha more desirable grades. The receipts o
steers at this point were not heavy, and as
buyers all wanted a few they wera ojit In
good season and tha market ruled active
from, start to finish, all the early arrivals
lining disposed of in short order.
The cow market was also active and
otl-ong to a dime higher. The commoner
kinds did not show much Improvement, but
the demand for the better grades was heav
ier than the supply and the prices paid were
safely a dime higher than those In force at
the close of last week. Owing to the fact
that supplies of any kind were not heavy
the pen were cleared at an early hour.
The demand for bulls did not seem to
show much Improvement and tha market
could not be quoted much more than
steady. Veal calves were ready sellers at
firm prices. . . .
There were quite a few stockers and feed
ers on sale, but the demand waa not as
brisk aa It might have been. The extreme
cold weather R waa feared would keep
country buyers at home, and for that rea
son speculators were not as heavy buyers
as thev otherwise would have been. Any
,hinr n all desirable, thoush. sold without
much troub'e at fully steady prices, while
the commoner kinds were neglected and no
more than steady. Representative Bales:
