On account of crippled wire service out
side trading was light In the abeat pit.
The market opened weak, largely because
of lower cables and las re Argentine ship
ments. Another factor waa a report of
namonai rain in toe southwest, etlertually
breaking the long drouth in that section.
May was a shade to Sfl-V: lower at 81V.

seemed to be deckledly bearish and they
were inclined to sell freely. Dun eg the

May was soon selling at Hltc open buy

checked the downward tendency and some
recovery was made, but as the demand
from that source slackened, prices again
started In search of a lower level. Cm

In buying orders In an endeavor to sup
port the market, but his efforts were of
no avail. Prices continued to sink until
May had touched sUtr, a decline of lc
from the opening, which was the high
point of the day. The cloae was weak,
with May at.t"VtC. July ran red between
lVaac. closing at Slc, a loss of l7o for
the day. Clearances of wheat and flour
were delayed on account of wire trouble.
Exports of wheat and flour for the week
according to Bradstreete were equal to
S.aM.WO bu. Primary receipts were 4"0
bu.. against tas.SuO bu. a year ago. Min
neapolis, Imluth and Chicago reported re
ceipts of 168 cars, compared with 448 carl
, last wtsk and ITS curs a year ago.
Corn waa subjected to about the satns
experience as wheat, with the possible ex
ception that the pit crowd ass less fesr-
. ful of selling corn than wheat. The early
market was comparatively steady, owing
f ta the firm tone of cables and the large
shipping business done yesterday. With
the break In wheat, however, "weakness
on developed and prices declined sharply.
The market received good support st
times, but It wss sufficient to csuse only
slight rallies and offerings continued to
coma out on small bulges. Closing prices
were weak at nearly the bottom figures.
May opened a shade lower to a shads
higher at tSVyi'-. sold down to 4S74)&4:c

jjr Hi cars, with 2 of contract grade.
"SlAts displayed some weaknesa early on
.selling of tViO.flOO bu. of May by a prominent
oomm lesion house. The crowd was under
.the Impression that the big long had finally
liegun to dispose of hla holdlnga. but when
it waa discovered that such was not the
ease, a fair demand from commission
bouses and local traders soon caused a
steadier feeling. Tha market was affected
somewhat bp the weaknesa In wheat and
corn. After opening a shade to He lower.

hog market waa the principal bull factor.

.ii.1. TPRK. J"". 22-Annther day f
active trading In stocks marked the specu
lation taken up In the last few davs. The
enormous blocks of stocks in thousands of
shares hurled from one portion of the msr
ket to another was sufficient evidence that
leadership of the market wis In daring
and powerful hands. About the only news
rrom a stock market standpoint was made
up of the surmises as to the personality
?l ,1ew,lr active speculative party and
the Identity of their operations, whether
T" thebyli' or the selling side. Boms of
ths selling waa openly dons in the interest
of the principals in the leadership, while
their brokers were also buying at other
points with ostentation snd vociferation.
The usual difficulty in tracing skillfully
coveted speculations waa fell on the part
S i, th" ,bora operators who sought to
rollow the movements of the larger opera
tors. The popular supposition wss that
the newly active party in the stock mar
ket included speculative elements that
have been prominent in cotton and In
grain during the recent activity In those
markets snd something like a pool had
been arranged by which these various ele
ment, were acUng In concert to lift the
prices of stocks to their own profit. The
trading presented all the, characteristics
pf the periods of activity of such organ
ised speculation. The buying and bidding
up of prices was skillfully shifted from one
to another quarter calculated to affect
opinion on the market as a whole and
selling at other points was cotncldentally
carried on in ths realising of profits. Late
in ths day the reactionary tendency be
came fairly general under the weight of
the selling to realise and the level of
pries receded materially from the highest.
The lata selling was some what areTa-
vated by the report of a banking failure
in Cleveland and the downward tendency
was not very effectually arrested before
the close, which was unsteady. The fore
cast of another very favorable bank state
ment for tomorrow did not serve to sus
tain the late market, as such a showing
hss been counted upon throughout the
week, owing to the extreme ease of money.
Estimate of the receipts of currency from
the interior are at variance, so that the
gain In cash Is reckoned all the wsy from
tfl.POrr.om to tI3.OP0.O00 from all sources. The
eened proeject of wsr lnluees higher
prices abroad as well as here, but there
la no sign In foreign markets of the anima
tion awakened here. Foreigners bought a
fw thousand shares here today and the
listing or Hammore ar Ohio on the wernn
bourse was a strengthening Influence on
all the subsidiary companies of the Prnn
rvlvanla.
Amalgamated? Copper and Realty pre
ferred were under positive pressure all
day and Southern Pacific and Pennsyl
vania were held back from the general ad
vance on sales to realise on yesterday's
gains. United States Steel preferred was
late in advancing and did not hold wen.
Bock Island bonds relapsed in ths bond
market, which, however, continued nrm.
United States bonds were unchanged on
call.

CATTLE There waa a very small tun
of cattle here today for a Friday and. in
fact, there was scarcely enough with wul.h
to make a test of the market. As win be
seen lrom the table of receipts above, the
supply for the Week ha been light both as
compared with last week and with the
same week of last year, but owing to the
bad condition of ths markets east trading
has been dull here sll the week wlih "the

some of the rattle that ahowed considera

loss amounting to zuatuc,
The cow market was considerably more
active with prices unevenly higher. Bome

yesterday, while others looked very little
better. Packers seemed to want the butcher

In good season. The market has been fluc
tuating back and forth so rapidly this wee
that prices are in such a condition as to
make comparisons with a week ago rather
difficult. As a reneral thing, thuueh. the
market is about H'iilbc lower. Bt me of the
choicer bunches, however, are light around
steady for the week.
Bulls, vrai caives ana stags an sold at
steady to strong p-ices.
There were very few stockers and feed-

There hss been a fairly good demand for
the better grades all the week and prices
on such kinds are not over unwise lower.
but when tt comes to the commoner and
medium kinds the loss amounts to :3t?2,ic,
with trading very slow. Representative
