LONDON, Jan. 12. Money waa In fair
demand today: discounts In fair demand.
Operators on the Stock exchange were leas
confident, fears between Russia and Japan
alternating with hopes of peace. Japanese
and Russian securities were depressed ow
ing to the disquieting rumors. Consols were
weak. Americans opened irregular and
reacted to below parity, being dominated
by the view taken of the far eastern situa
tion and were Inanimate while awaiting de
velopments. They closed quiet. The
amount of bullion taken Into tile Bank of
England on balance today was 92,0i0.

Baron llayashl, the Japanese minister tat
London, of confirmation of the unfavorable
press dispatches about the unfavorable con
dition of negotiations In the far east,
rentes and Russian exteriors became fee

NEW YORK, Jan. 12.-COTTON-The
murkef ouetied easy at a decline of EhuIO
points following lower Liverpool cables
than expected and rather disquieting early
rumors from the far east. Soon alter the
opening March had sold down to 13.6'Kj,
May to 13.S"c, and July to 13. sic, these be
ing net declines of about iZ3 points. At
the lower level offerings became less and
the market turned a little steadier and at
midday prices had recovered to nearly the
opening prices. Again there was a slight
set buck under realising, but in the early
afternoon the market was rallied sharply as
a result It was thought, of buying for the
account of Philadelphia .-lot interests wh.U
later the demand was moieasd by com
mission houses, evidently favorably Im
pressed by the receipts which ran light,
parlcularly the scml-weckly interior fig
ures. On the advance buying orders weia
received from New Orleans in good num
bers, and the high level wuh carried to
within a few points of , ther best of the

c. cattle here this morning, but the demand
seemed to be In better chape' than It was
yesterday and trading ruled more active
with prices about steady. The quality of
the offerings was rather below the average
but a good clearance waa made at a rea
sonably early hour.
There was about the usual proportion of
corn-fed terrs Included In the receipts, and
while the quality was common tha market
ruled a little more active than yesterday
with prices fully as good. Some of the
warmed-up kinds were hard to sell at
steady prices as buyers all seemed to be
looking for the better grades and In fact
said they could not find enough good cattle
to fill their orders.
The cow market also had a little more
life to It, especially early In the morning,
than was noticed yesterday, and the gen
eral tone of the market was better. While
the prices nald could not be. quoted higher
they were fully as good and salesmen found
It much easier to dispose of their holdings
than was the case yesterday. The demnaid
seemed to be good for all kinds, so that
a good clearance was made.

SHEEP There una nnl an TipaslVS run

anil, as the demand continued in good
shape, the market ruled active and not far
from steady. The quality of the bulk of
the ofteringa was not as good as usual, and
that had a tendency to make biivers bear
ish. The market could probably best be
described by calling it about steady on
the better grades, while the commoner
kinds were wenk to a dime lower. Com
mon ewes suffered about as much ss any
kind. A good clearnnce. though, was made
at a reasonably earlv hour. A bunch of
native lambs sold as high as $f.75, ewes
sold up to 34. CO. wethers brought 84. 40, and
Wethers and yearllngn $4 4U uud 8-1.60, and
