MUNFORDVILLE, Ky Sept. 12-In the presence of several thousand people the re publican state campaign was opened here today bjr Colonel Morris B. Belknap, candi date for governor. The party leaders were In attendance and other candidates on the state ticket de livered short addresses. Special trains brought large crowds from nearby cities. Colonel Belknap's speech dealt mainly with the pardon record of Governor Beck ham, which, he asserted, was largely re sponsible for the lawless conditions pre vailing In Breathitt and other counties. He said In part: The dramatic and tragic panorama of po litical events In our ata;" for four years la one irom wnicn we instinctively turn away. It la heavy trascdy. with the slime of un truth clinging to its garments. Repulsive and reeking with the foul atmosphere of dungeons, it displays a body prostituted to perjury and fraud. Noted Breathitt Coaaty Pardon. Referrlng to one of the more noted of the Breathitt county pardons Colonel Belk nap said: Perhaps Ralelsh was Innocent of having voted any other than the democratic ticket. Raleigh was the man convicted of killing a Utile girl In Breathitt county and who waa ardoned by Mr. uecknam. rour governor, v nardnnfm this miscreant, haa shown that the thinks the brute who would "im properly accost" your daughters and then shoot them like does was fit after a few years' punishment to enjoy the full privi leges of cltlxenshlp. The table of pardons aranted during tne last three administrations and submitted to the public by the governor In defense of his record, la an Interesting one, although conspicuously Incomplete. Still, It shows that at least 1.125 convicts have been set free In eleven years. Thoae paroled and not counted would easily carry the number to 1.200. Mr. Been nam nas asueo me. in me eveni of mv election. If I would pardon Howard or Powers or either of them. 1 answer In the words of Lord Coke: "When the case happens I shall do that which shall be right for a Judge to do." Referring to the trial of the alleged as sassins of Goebel, Mr. Belknap said: The trials that have been so far con ducted with partisan Juries- and perjured testlmonv leave Justice unsatisfied. No such travesties can fool the mass of the In telligent people, and once again they de mand that the facts which tney have rea son to believe are bclnar concealed lor po litical purposes, and which are vital to the truth in this case, be divulged. TWO CHICKENSJN A NEW ROLE Startle Visitors to Jardla des Plaates by Their Powers as Vea trlloqalsts. (Copyrighted, 1908, by Press Publishing Co.) PARIS, Sept 12. (New York World Cable- gram Special Telegram.) Chicken ventril oquists are the latest scientific attraction at the Jardln des Plantes. The fowls, a hen and a rooster, are from French Guiana, Their curious gift collects a crowd about them dally. When the rooster loudly an nounces that his wife lias laid an egg, or the hen Indulges In friendly gossip with a neighbor the sounds seem to emanate from a distant part of the garden. When visitors heard chickens where none were In sight interesting stories of bird ghosts began to be circulated till It de veloped that the Guiana fowls were the culprits. The chickens seem as much surprised as any one at the remoteness of their voices. AFTER . BRITISH POTTERIES Aiaerioaa Syndicate Seeks te Gain Control of the Entlra Trade. A Good Sweet Pickle This formula will answer for most fruits: Take four quarts of best vinegar, five pounds of best brown or coffee C sugar, quarter of a pound of stick cinnamon and two ounces of whole cloves to seven pounds of fruit. Boll up and skim well before pouring over the fruit. Most housekeepers rescald the syrup sev eral times before Anally putting away In order to Insure against fermentation. Sweet Pickled Plums Select perfect plums, free from all decay, wipe and place In the preserving kettle, first placing a layer of plums, and over thla the best cane sugar, and sprinkle over cinnamon and cloves, con tinue until all the fruit, apices and sugar are used; then pour over the vinegar and set in bath of cold water and cook until the plums are tender but not broken. The proportions for the above recipe are eight pounds of plums, four pounds of sugar, two teaspoonfuls of cinnamon, one tea- spoonful of cloves and one pint of "beat cider vinegar. Place the plums In stone Jars when cooked, cook the syrup for Ave minutes, pour over the fruit. Cover when perfectly cold. Sweet Pickled Peaches Select fine, per fect peaches, brush and cut In half and re- movo the pits; fill the cavity from which the stone has been removed with horse radish mixed with a little vinegar. Tie this two halves together and pack in glass Jars and cover with the following liquid: To one pint of the beat cider vinegar add two pounds of the best cane fcugar. Tie in cheesecloth bag one teaspoonful of whole cloves, half a teaspoonful of cassia buds, three sticks of cinnamon broken in bits, and a few tiny pieces ot ginger, allspice and nutmeg, not to exceed a teaspoonful in all. Place these ingredients In the pre serving kettle and bring to the boiling point, pour over the peaches and allow to cool, reheat the vinegar and again pour over the peaches; this must be repeated three times, allowing the vinegar to become perfectly cold between each heating. When the preserves are finished allow to become cold before sealing. Keep in a dry. dark place. Spiced Tomatoes Prepare a hot spiced syrup of two pounds of brown cane sugar, half an ounce of stick cinnamon, quarter of an ounce of whole cloves and one pint of vinegar. Wipe carefully with a damp cloth perfect tomatoes, four pounds will be necessary; when the syrup is boiling hot put In the tomatoes and cook the syrup gently and when the tomatoes are cool return to the syrup and cook for ten min utes, simmering very gently. When cold place in glass jars. The syrup must be as thick aa good, molasses and perfectly cold before pouring over the tomatoes. Seal aa usuaL Bpiced Grapes Take perfect bunches of Concord grapes, wash and drain carefully. Place in the preserving kettle three pounds of cane sugar, one ounce of cinnamon, one grated nutmeg and one quart of best cider vinegar; tie the spices in a cheesecloth bag, place them In the sugar and vinegar, and bring all to the boiling point; lay the bunches of grapes in the bofting syrup and heat thoroughly. Remove from the svruD and place In the Jars, pour over them the syrup, and cover when perfectly cold. 'CURES weak men free.
