LOWERS A TROTTING RECORD
Major Bslmaf Reduces that for Geldings

DAN R GETS PACING RECORD OF 2.0! 3-4

PROVIDENCE, R. I.. Sept 4.-The
world'a trotting record for geldings was
today lowered by the bay gelding Major
Deimar to 2.024 In a trial exhibition against
his ewn record of 2:04, and the fourth day
of the grand circuit meeting here was
further made memorable by Dan R., who
paced the first of the free-tor-all In 2:01V
Dan R. went to the quarter In :80H; half,
IMSi. and three-quarters, L30H- The heat
from the start to this point waa a mag
nificent struggle lor supremacy with
Darlel.
At the first turn McDonald successfully
captured the pole position from Dan R.
and for the next half mile both horses
traveled as a team. When within 200
yards of the wire Dan R. scarcely led by
a nose, but by a supreme effort at the last
moment increased that distance to half
a length. When the time was announced
both horse and driver were cheered repeatedly.
Sensational Work,
The most sensational work of the day
was done In the second heat. Prince Alert,
the favorite, who finished fourth in the
first heat, because of a poor start, rushed
Into first position at the three-quarters
pole by a break by Dan R. Harold S., fol
lowed by Darlel, In a fine burst of speed,
headed the leader and although they fin
ished In that order all three came under
the wire so closely together that their rel
ative positions were In doubt until
the decision had been announced. The
third heat found Prince Alert a strong
leader and he won easily In 2:03ft, the
slowest time made during the race.
Major Deimar, between two runners,
started out to beat his own record of 2:04.
He went to a break on the first trial, but
his second attempt found him steady and
he forced the runners time aftor time to
Increase their speed. He went to the quar
ter in :S04. half In :5, and he reached
the three-quarters pole in l:30Vi, finishing
strong In 2:02Vj. Summary:
