i ne easier tone in tonay a exenange mar
ket was largely due to the appearance In
that market of bankers' finance bills which
re connected with borrowing abroad. 1 ne
foreign banking houses In New York also
re an Imnortant source or supply ror
funds In the time money market. .
Ratea for time money and commercial
paper continue very firm. The present
buudance of call loans is largely caused
by the placing on deposit of trust company
funds with the banks to secure the imprest
of deposit accounts, which Is higher than
the present call loan rate. Any rise in the
call lonn rate would be promptly followed
by the withdrawal of these trust company
deposits from the banks for placing In
trie can loan market, wnicn would neces-
itate a shirting or the loan accounts or
the banks also and some probable disturb
ance In the money market. This contin
gency is a repressive Influence on stock
market speculation just now. i here is
an anxiety also over the closing lp of the
cotton corner, wnicn it is generally Be
lieved Is achieved and which will neces
sarily be an operation of some peril.
Many rumors are still prevalent or ef
forts being made by large Industrial cor
porations to secure temporary loans. The
recent heaviness of New York Central,
which was a depressing factor for a time
this morning, seems to be explained by ths
etition to tne stock exenange to list
1. 000,000 additional general mortgage bonds.
These are In connection with the contin
uing operation of the company refunding
plan. Lake Shore's statement of earnings
tor tne June quarter, showing a decline in
surplus to S7BS.218. compared with $1,777,854
for the corresponding quarter of last year,
may also account for the recent dnpresslon
of New York Centrsl. The weekly crop
bulletin was counted bullish on cotton and
bearish on corn and . wheat. .Some old
rumors were revived of coming control of
Tennessee Coal by the United States Steel
corporation, but with confirmation. Con
fidence In the copper trade outlook was
assigned as the cause for the strength of
Amalgamated Copper.
The pond market was nun ana steady.

Cotton Market.
NEW YORK. Aug. 25. COTTON The
cotton market was strong at an advance of
5 to 14 points, and ruled very active during
the entire session, with the exception of
August, which wns dull and neglected and
which fluctuated between 12.?6c and 12.30c,
closing at 12.29c, or net 4 points higher. The
balance of the list was generally firm.
After the opening there was a momentary
setback under realising, but prices soon re
sumed their upward course nd at midday
were forced still higher by the weekly re
port of the weather bureau, which proved
finite as bullish as had been expected. The
Initial gains were due to a continuation of
the short crop scare, which was acceler
ated br the firm cables and apprehensions
as to the character of the early bureau re
port. In addition to this th ellaue bought
very aggressively, taking a block of 6,000
September and bidding for more at ad
vanced prices. This. In connection with the
light movement and the continued talk of
dumage as a result of boll weevil in Texas
soon had the shorts In full retreat, while
It also encouraged more demand for out
side account, leading to a more active mar
ket than has been experienced since the ex
iting times of last month. The best prices
of the session occurred late in the after
noon and at that level the active month
showed net gains of 3 to 31 points, with
September selling at 11.36c, October at 10 60c,
December at 10.30c and January at 11.31c.
This level attracted heavy realising and
ust before the close the market Bold oft
harnly. losing a matter of from 6 to 8
points and was finally nearly steady net
i'HK points higher on the new crop posi
lons Sales were estimated at 800.000 bales.
There were further special sales reported
amounting to 3,17 bales to spinners, un
the other hand 7.404 bales were received

HOGS 'lhere was not an excessive run
of hogs here this morning, but as Chlcr.go
was quoted lower the tendency here was
to pound prices to some extent. The de
mand tor lightweights, however, was so
liberal that prices improved instead I
aoins down and the eArlv sslsa were airong
to a nickel higher, with a top at .i0.' Thai
waa a dime ii.-jtner than yesterany s iesi
price, but the hogs were better than any
thing ottered yesterday. They weighed i9i
pounds. The nesvv hugs, however, were.
neglected and sold weaa to a nickel lower
than yesterday and went largely from ia.a
to 85.40, with coarse stuff even lower. The
meaiuni weights went luselv from fc.40 to
d.do and the lights from 5.tA to to.fo.
trading was not very brisk, but still tho
bulk ot the hogs waa out 01 first hands In
fairly good season.
There was not much change In the mar
ket from mart to finish, tliouah. if any.
thing, the heavy hogs were weaker tow aril
ine close.
Toward noon several cars of hogs arrived
and, as Is apt to be the case when pickers
nave tneir more urgent orders niiea. they
bought the late hogs a little lower. The
decline amounted to fully a nickel on the
heavyweights, while the light were also
little easier. Representative sales:

CATTLE There wa a much smaller run
of cattle here today than was generally
anticipated and as a result prices on ait
desirable grades of cattle showed some
Improvement. Trading was quite octiv
from start to finish, so an early clearance
was made.
Comfed steers were In good demand and
the better grades sold strong to a dime
higher, while the commoner kind sold
steady to strong. A there were only a few
on sale, everything at all dcslrabie wa dis
posed of In good season. The top price of
the day was 85.40.
There were a good many cows on sale
ns compared with the total receipts, but
none too many to meet the requirements
of the local trade. Th market ruled active,
with prices a little stronger tl.n ihose In
force yesterday. The strength, though, was
contlned largely to the better grades, a
there were so many of the common kind 4
that prices had little opportunity for im
provement. Bulls, veal calves and stags did not show
enough change from yesterday to be worthy
of mention.
The demand for stockers and feeders was
again very brisk this morning and prices
on good stuff advanced sharply. Some of
the most desirable grade sold safely 1o4i'163
higher than yesterday, as hlgu us 34 10
being paid. Even the medium una common
Kinds snowea more Rirengui
manded better prices than they have for
some time past. Although there were a
good many cattle In the yards, an early
clearance was made.
The Quality or tne western oeei oieoio
received was again very common, packers,
though, wanted a few and as a result paid
good, strong price for the kinds that were
offered. It was very evident that they
were anxious for good stuff, but there his
been nothing good here In so long thit It
s hard to tell what a cnoice oiinai wuum
bring. Range cows sold freeiy at stronger
prices than were paid yesterday, wnll;
stockers and feeders were In good demand
at prices ranging from steady to 10o or 15o
higher for the best grades. Representative
