Aug. W.-(Special.)-The Wahoo base ball park was crowded last evening to witness a game between the Printers' and Clerks' teams of the city league. The game wss an exciting one end the rooting was evenly divided up to the third Inning, when the umpire for the Clerks commenced to make "rotten" deci sions. Then the crowd commenced to root fnr the Printers. At the end or tne nrtn Inning the score stood 2 to 1 and half the crowd was out of the grand stand on the diamond rbaring and yelling. The umpire toward evening, when the showers closed the day's play. Along the back lines and In the veranda throughout the day there waa a most encouraging gallery, with a preponderance of dainty gowns and fem inine wiles. As a social affair It waa the real opening day. The day held several surprises, chief among which was the defeat of Dr. Shel don of Kansas City by M. B. Holbrook of OnawA, la. It was one of the prettiest matches of the day and was peculiar In that Holbrook never left his lobbing game. Sheldon tried a new serve andatfalled to do as good work as he has generally done before In the tournament, but was beaten squarely and fairly by the steady, relent less lobbing of his opponent. Sheldon played a careful game and placed well. but every return down the center or the side lines and every serve was lobbed back until Sheldon would drive it outside. Holbrook waa very clever on his feet and covered a great deal of ground. He was the runner-up in the trl-state tournament at Sioux City. Local Man In Third Round, Another of the surprises waa the defeat of Henry Eberhardt by Hughes, who is the only local man left In the tournament at the beginning of the third found. While Henry Eberhardt. did not expect to stay long in the tournament, his work and repu tation were expected to carry him through further In the play. Hughes simply beat him by better all-around play, Faller won his second match from Burr In quick order, defeating htm in one love set and a 6-1 set. His work Is very clever, ness. Blatherwlck s much vaunted am bidexterity stood him in little stead against Hunt's game, which Is one of careful plac ing. At times he has extended himself for a few plays and then has shown a mult! tude of strokes, graceful playing and hard drives through his opponent. Map- t Compaay Frank, were on the courts In the afternoon and won their match from Webster and Sunderland by the prettiest kind of team work. They are faster players than their two older brothers and play together like clockwork. Despite their slse, they cover the court well and there were very few points msde by passing them. Their really- strong work comes out in their play at tha net. Already they are picked aa the team that will play down to the finals and Sand erson and Holland are generally conceded to be their opponents. The latter were on the courts in the afternoon In a match with Van Camp and Knox and won out readily enough. Because of Sanderson's holding the cup in the singles their play was watched very closely. It Is certain that Sanderson Is just as quick and clever ss he was last year, if not a little better. He plays a strong gam at the net, placing accurately, and smashes lobs with a veng eance. His partner, Holland, Is not a strong singles player, but works well with Sander son and particularly at tha net, where he Is almost Invincible. It Is doubtful if Ray mond and Farnsworth, the present holders of the doubles cup, will be able to beat either of these teams. Raymond has im proved greatly so far In the tournament dls I play, but Farnasworth la not on the scene as yet, and they will be handicapped by lack of practice together. Sam Beaatlfnl High Lobblag. For high lobbing Fletcher and Green did the beet that has ever been seen on the local courts. Many of their lobs went fifty and sixty feet In the air and they were all IS. (Special y I well placed, falling within a foot of the back service line time and time again. A number of the matches in the first round of tha doubles were defaulted be cause of non-arrival of players and a dis position on the part of several to keep out otbe extra play while they are still In the singles.
