It waa not much credit to the Wine Bib
bers to win yesterday's shutout game. It
took to them as naturally as a duck, takes
to water. The game lacked snap and gin
ger as a whole, although there was a
bright spot or two In It. fJh'jgart Illumi
nated It twice by a pair of very sensa
tional atops, and Carter hung out a lan
tecn by a long straight throw from right
to the plate, cutting oft Colonel Freaton,
who wai desiring to acore hi second run.
Another bright little feature of the alTalr
waa a bouquet presented to Dusty Ml'.lef
by noma of his numerous frtenda just as
Dusty was picking up the stick for the
first time. It really was not a very kind
thing for those friends to do. but Dusty
didn't seem to mind It much, for he made
food with a clean single.
While Tenrla only made one more hit
than Omaha they were so bunched as to
oount. Omsha appeared to he wholly at
the mercy of Barry. The six hits got were
of the scratchy order, while the Bplrlteers
lined out good old-fashioned juicy ones,
four of which were doubles. And thereon
h&ns a tale.
Preston, that man who somo people will
recall stood out In left fleld for Mr. Rourke
awhile this spring, made a single, a double
and, by the grace of the umpire, another
double. (This last one happened to travel
outside of the foul line, everybody thought,
but It "went" Just the seme.) Stewart,
Ace, pulled out a two-bagger" and Red
Wright did the same, so that these three
gentlemen from Omaha were very much In
evidence with the willow, making five of
the seven hits credited to Feorla.
Carter tore off a pair of skinny little old
hit and Kelly, the new shortstop who Just
drove in from San Francisco, made one in
the ninth inning, when, with a little bait
playing, Omaha might have done some
thing. Shugart and Hickey made the other
two. Kelly, by tbe way, works as If it was
in him. Ite only had two chances, but he
cared for them In a very gentlemanly way,
and It was not a very easy chance at that.
Ocnlns was Genius in the Held, but wm
out hunting when It came to batting. This
was the trouble. Mr. Barry of Teorla was
entirely tot stingy to make a real good
guest. Ho will never do to trot In the
smart set unless he changes his ways. He
even struck out five men after refusing to
let anybody hit the ball so it would count.

HONORS EASY ON THE FIRST DAY'S PLAY
One Victory and Una Defeat the

Strength.
The folf teams from Des Moines divided
with the Field and Country clubs yester
day afternoon, the Des Moines Country
club defeating the former S up and the
University and Wareland Golf club play
ing the latter 34 down. The day was all
that the golfers could desire and both
courses were in superb condition.
It had been generally expected that the
Des Moines Country club would defeat the
Field club, although it proved to be by
only the narrowest kind of a margin.
There was a good gallery at the first tee
to watch the players start off oh their
round of the eighteen holes at the Fleld
club and not a few of them were women.
The course was greatly different from the
course the Country club players are used
to, their greens being faster and all of the
hazards built In, while the Fleld club
hazards are all natural. This all proved a
handicap to the visitors and the Fleld
club team led out over the first nine holos,
but began to lose coming home. With
seven men In at the end the Fleld club
led and it seemed as if the Field club would
win, but the remaining players caught up
and passed the Field club by the narrow
margin of Ave up. Warren Dickinson of
Des Moines made the low score around the
course of 89, with Dr. Sumney second with
90 strokes. The score:

Play at the Country Clnb
At the Country club the University and
Waveland Oolf club was slmnlv outclassed.
although it made a plucky uphill fight.
At no time did It hold the load, but it
played all of the time over the twenty-
seven holes played. The course was in ex
cellent condition, although the greens were
a little heavy because of the damp weather
of the last week. During the morning the
visitors had played over the course and
were more or less familiar with It. The
Country club's team was not as strong as
had been hoped, owing to the absence of
Dick Kimball, Leavltt, Strickland and Fair
field, but all of the ten men in the team
played consistently, only two of them fin
ishing down. Dr. Watson's play against
J. R. Lemlst was exceedingly fine. With
the score standing at 3 down at the nine
teenth hole. Dr. Watson played the next
nine holes in 40, 1 under bogle, and won
out by 8 up. B. O. Otilnand, the 15-year-old
player of the Waveland club, attracted a
good deal of attention nnd acquitted him'
self quite creditably. He was 5 down at
the tenth hole and brought the score down
to 1 down in the next eighteen holes by the
steadiest kind of play. The score:
