Kansas City began the overhauling In its

L. L. Caldwell won the city tennis sin
gles championship last evening on the
courts of the Omaha Field club by defeat
ing Bcribner in the finals. The match was
not particularly exciting, with the excep
tion of the second set, which Bcribner won
by clean-cut, hard playing. Bcribner did
not do himself justice as a whole and failed
to make use of his lobbing, which is his
surest game. Caldwell's reach and net
play were generally Invincible and he
passed Scrlbner at the net repeatedly.
Playing from the back court Caldwell threw
his whole strength in his back-hand strokes
and drove the ball down the sides for
points repeatedly. Bcribner did not seem
to have bis heart in the game and played
listlessly most of the time. Occasionally
he rallied brilliantly and passed Caldwell
prettily or lobbed over him, but the ral
lies proved to be short-lived. The score

Twenty-two and a halt minutes in a 20-

out a flaw.
An overcast sky. with threat of rain, in
duced Mr. Fife to limit the course to M

from Bcotland llghtsblp and return. To
avoid another blanketing 6 nam rook I
feigned a start. Running from windward
to the starting line It ehaped a course

Shamrock III soon tacked end both headed

at which It was at its beat. The old boat
hardly gave it a race. At 12:05, when they
made the first tack together. Shamrock

only as to the number of minutes.
At 12:15 the challenger crossed the bow
of the old timer half a mile to windward,

SEMI-FINALS TO BE DECIDED TODAY

Detroit. !
CLEVELAND, Aug. 6. The fourth round
of the western amateur golf championship
Is over and three cltlea are represented in
the four survivors that will play in the
semi-finals tomorrow. H. Chandler Egan
of Exmoor, Chicago; his coutiin, Walter
Egan of the ranie club; IL H. Russell of
Detroit and Eddie Brown of Cleveland will
battle in tha semi-finals. Each cf these
men won his match.
Tha afternoon's play under a blue sky
brought out a big gallery. Chandler Egan
played E. M. Byers of Allegheny in the
best match the tournament has yet seen.
Chandler Egan has had hard matches all
week, and today he had to fight his beat
to defeat Byers. The game was so close
that Egan was only one up at the eight
eenth hole. He had only to halve this hole
to win tho match, but a bad shot to the
bunker seemed to put him out. He got
out nicely, however, while Byers over
approached and lost. Egan plays In the
semi-finals with R. H. Russell of Detroit,
who easily beat Dr. Fredericks of Oil City
today.
The biggest surprise of tho day came
when Louis James met defeat at the hands
of E. Brown of Cleveland. James played
miserably all through the contest This
brings Brown against Walter Egan in the
seml-flnals, as Egan easily beat J. Sellem
of Chicago. Chandler Egan is now picked
to win the championship, as he Is playing
the finest game of the four who are left.
The scores, morning play:
Walter Egan, Chicago, beat W. Carhart,
