XRW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS. Diminishing Demand t'aases Reac tion, Thesah Not Aeate Weakness. NEW YORK. July 30. Yesterday s check to the recovery In prices was supplemented today by reaction. There was no acute weakness, except for the eccentric plunges amongst the Inactive specialties, but the demand diminished to nominal proportions. Commission houses which reported yester day an awakening Inquiry for stocks found today that the alight reaction In prices had almost entirely discouraged this buying and In some cases had induced buyers to get out of the market again hurriedly. A con stant drip of small selling undermined the market and caused prices to crumble, t he early selling centered on Atchison, follow ing up the late movement of yesterday. The general list resisted for a time until some of the specialties began to make violent de clines. The weakness then became quite feneral. Several of the professed reasons or yesterday's selling of Atchison were cleared up todav without strengthening the stock In the market. Official denials were made of rumors of a coming bond Issue and of an alleged Unsuccessful attempt to nego tiate a temporary loan by the company. The rnsjorts of rains In the southwest, with ex pected benefit to the corn crop, disposed of another ground of weakness. The selling was partly by professional bears, but the suspicion remained that long slock was coming upon the market end made an un favorable Impression upon speculative senti ment In the whole market. An unfavorable showing of Juno net earnings by reason of flood damage and a bear raid to dislodge a pool s holdings of the stock were hinted at. A feature of the situation la the revival of various reports, running from the plausible to the highly Improbable, of new combina tions and absorptions of rollnnd systems. The purchase of the Evansvllle & Terre Haute evidently gave a new lense of life to this class of reports. They concerned them selves with railroads of all grades from those of a few tens of thousands of shares to the New York Central and Pennsylvania. The policy of combination of nvailnble rail road systems doubtkss has favored the rail road world and the liquidation which has been forced In some shares has offered at tractive opportunity for absorption. In strong contrast" to the extravagant valua tions at which the mergers of the boom period were consummated. Some resumption of the Bpeculntlve excitement In cotton wss ngainat the stock market and the lorge speculation developing In the grain market is looked upon with a dc-rre of apprehen sion, owing to the general financial situa tion. Corn showed strength today In spite of the favorable crop news end there win Borne fear that the spring wheat crop was suffering further deterioration. The money market showed a growing ease for time loans. But the movement of prices in the specialties on the Stock exchange IndicnteQ that there was some selling out of collateral In loans. Stocks recovered a large part of their declines late In the day, when the liquidation In Atchison had spent Its force and the closing was apathetic and not far from last night's level. In the bond market Chicago Terminal and Transfer 4s were offered down 64 Just be fore the close. Toledo, St. Louis & Western 4s fell 44. The market was quite broad and showed a good inquiry, although some of the Inactive investment Issues were market able at considerable concessions from last prices. Total sales, par value, 32,410,000. United States 3s declined 1 and the old 4s 14 per cent on the last call. Following are tne quotations on the New fork Stock exchange: Atchlaon do pfd Dal. NEW YORK, Ju!y 30 COTTON-Markct opened easy at an advance of 2 points on July and 3 on August, while the new crop was 1 point higher to 6 points lower and during the enflre session ruled irregular, showing considerable excitement at times. Hie old crop months at first showed great firmness om covering, with July attracting more demand than on any previous day this week, while the later positions, which at the start had shown a. declining tendency as a result of realizing, also recovered and for a time ruled lirm with the near posi tions, bull news from New Orleans and a renewal of clique support. Then July, which had sold up to la.tioc, dropped to 13.49c and was still lower without finding buyers, and this with rather easier cables caused a partial decline In the new crop options, so that around midday they were prac tically at last night's close. Heavy rains were reported from Texas, however, which again stimulated buying, and with another show of clique support the market was soon up to the best level of the day, with August selling at 12.49c, (September 10.90o and October 10.03c, the general list, with the exception of July, showing net gains of 3(3 12 points. July in the meantime hud reached 13.15c. then subsequently turned strong, selling up to 13.50c, while Just be fore the close the balance of the list was , , u iimi 1 1 n 1 ficnouiu, mill n uguo, selling at 12.36c, then to 12.20o on the last sale. July closed at 13.40c, a net advance of 4 points, while August was net 17 points tower, ine new crop was nnany near me bottom and net 1 point higher ur 6 points lower. The general tone at the close was steady. Sales, estimated at 150,000 bales. Today was the last notice day of the July contracts and trade this morning was nervous and apprehensive of developments In that position. A rumor had been circu lated yesterday that July shorts were out standing In excess of cotton available for delivery and the early demand tended to confirm this view. Notices were Issued es timated to the amount of 6,000 bales and were promptly taken, presumably by the bull clique. A factor In the early advance was the strong spot situation In Liverpool, sales there of some 8,000 bales being re ported at an advance el 8 points, and while in some quarters neavy gains were cred ited to the benefit of the crop they ex erted a bullish effect -on the average mar ket.
