CHICAGO, July 22 Wheat ruled weak

bi at a loss for September of c. Corn
Kan steady to a trifle easier, September
closing c lower. Oats were strong early,
closing iirm at a gain of c. Provisions
were unchanged to 10-i(12c higher.
The effect of yesterday's bjlllah govern
ment report stimulated the opening In
wheat nnd caused name early strength. Sep
tember wan a shade lower to a shade
higher at "Hc to hc, and Bold up quickly
to 7'iVie. On the advance, however, the pit
trader Bold freely and support was lack
ing. The result was an easing oft In prices,
which was furthered later In the session
by the unloading of long lines and by sell
ing orders from St. Louis. September went
down to 76o where commission houses
checked the decline and carried the price
back to H'riNc. the closing figures being
7W(i7tH o under yesterday.
Clearances of wheat and flour were equal
to 100.900 bu., with primary receipts 4X7,000
bu.,- Against l.OM.OOO bu. a year ago. Brad
treets world's visible supply showed a
decrease of 2,229,000 bu. Minneapolis and
Duluth reported receipts of 129 cars, which
with I run I recelDts of 46 cars. 15 of contract
grade, made a total for the three points of
174 cars, against jw last wee anu m a
year ago.
There was a good country ana commis
sion house demand for corn early increas
ing reports of uneven crop, and the market
showed strength. The break in wheat later
brought out liberal offerings and the ad
vance was soon lost. September closed
steady with a loss of He, at 4'.ie. after
ranging between 4e and 60Se. Trade was
not large and small receipts and firm cables
helped to suBtaln prices.
Trade In oats was largely local and prices
were somewhat better. The action of wheat
caused a feeling of dullness but a con
tinued support by local bulls on unfavor
able rroD advices saved the market from
a severe break and the close was at a
gain of o for September, at 2"Vi i-c,
with a run for the day from Z2Wa 33W.
There was some Improvement In the cash
demand. Local receipts were 164 cars.
Provisions were strong due to fair local
buying and an absence of outside liquida
tion, toarcther with a better feeling In hogs.
Trading waa rather quiet and without fea
ture. September closed unchanged at $14.25,
with lard 1O012VM higher, at t7.9o4l7.97V4. and
ribs up a shade at JS. 370 8.40.

NEW YORK. STOCKS AKD IIOXDS.
After All Day lff-"n in Valors
Prices Recover Somen hat.
NEW YORK, July 22-The price level of
securities made some recovery today In an
irregular market The opening rise met re
newed selling, especially In the United
States Steel stocks, which caused a wav
ering In the whole list. With a relaxation
of the urgent pressure upon these stocks
the market took a better tone and started
more steadily upwards. There were occa
sionfl slight renctlons, but the tradlnr fell
away to normal proportions at the reces
sions, until the last hour of the session.
At this time the market paused for a time
and then turned downwards on a growing
volume of selling and closed easy. The
principal active stocks had been lifted from
2 to i points over last night and the re
action loft them not more than half of the
extreme gains. The upward movement of
prices was accompanied by as little as the
recent severe declines, but the pressure to
S5ll was not felt and a partial rebound win
normal. The demand from the shorts waa
an Important element In the buying, as a
matter of course, after so violent a de
cline as that which has been occurring.
No other Inducement to cover shorts was
needed than the failure to dislodge stocks
with the recent customary ease. The
alarming rumors of financial difficulties
were numerous, yet all failed of corrobor
ation today, and this formed a negative In
fluence on the buying side of the market.
Some of the commission houses profesa to
have some buying orders of an Investment
character. These were not In large amounts
and they did not follow the market far
on any advances. The rise In the dividend
rate on Erie's first preferred from 3 to a 4
per cent basis made Itself felt to some ex
tent In the market. Many past hopes of
dividend increases, raised by the large sur
plus earnings, reported by various railroad
companies have been held In abeyance
since the period of putting surplus earnings
Dack into improvements, and sometimes In
addition Issuing bonds for additional Im
provement funds. Some of the high prices
ot last year in Blocks were based upon
probable dividend Increases which were
confidently counted upon, and comparative
ly few of which were realized. The Erie
Increase Is the first Incident to revive any
hope that some of these expectations may
be realized later, In spite of the prevalent
competition for ready funds amongst rail
road corporations. The early strength in
the grain market was logically against
stocks, but It was Ignored, and the late
reaction In grain failed equally to hold
stocks at the top level. Reports of rail
road earnings for the day were not us
favorable as In other recent cases. Mis
souri Pacific's gross Increase for May of
$3(i8,923 was charged to a net decrease of
$(i8,131 by the enhanced cost of operation.
Pittsburg. C, C. & St. L. gain of $3o6.4.".l
In gross for Juno was reduced to a net
gain of only $fil.264 by the higher operating
cost. On the other hand Chicago & North
western registered a gain of over 19 per
cent In gross earnings for June, while that
stock fell 1 on the stock exchange. There
was a notable falling off In the number cf
Inactive stocks to show wide declines on
the marketing of small blocks. Colorado
Fuel preferred was the only notable exam
ple, 100 shares of that stock selling 22 points
lower than the last preceding sale.
The active bond Issues were firmer, but
weaKnesa of some of the Investment Issues
made the market Irregiilnr. Total sales, par
vaiue, sz,i75,uw. united states bonds were
unchanged on call.

Commercial Transmission
of Marconigrams
Is being rapidly developed, and plans already
perfected comprehend the establishment of wire

Porto lUco, Alaska and at various strategic
points on the Great Lakes. The recent sale of
part of its treasury stock has provided addi

to develop the
Dividend-Earning Capacity of the Marconi
Wireless Telegraph Company of

The vast possibilities presented for the opera

by the American Company, should destine Its

HOGS There was only a fair run of hog
here this morning and under the Influence
of a good local demand the market opened
fairly active and generally 2V486c higher
than yesterday's average. The heavy hogs
sold largely at 85.22V4 to 85.26, with the
mixed loads going at 85.25 and 85.27H. The
choice light weight went from 8580 to
to.35. Trading was quite brisk and the
bulk of the early arrivals was disposed of
In good season. About the middle of the
forenoon, however, some late trains arrived
and by that time packers had their more
urgent, orders filled, and as a result they
lowered their bids and did not want to pay
more than steady prices with yesterday
for wht.t was left. Salesmen all wanted
the advance paid In the morning, so the
close waa very slow. Representative sales:
