Strike la Improbablo.
Br the action of ths second section of
ths Street Railway Employee' union
Wednesday afternoon there will be. aub
mltted to the International officers of that
organization for approval the request of
the local union for an Increase In the
waft-ea of the men employed by the Omaha
Council Bluff 8treet Railway company.
The action taken waa after considerable
discussion of the subject, which followed
the adoption of the same measure by the
auction- of the union which met last
Wednesday night. The request of the
union Is for a change of two features of
the present scale. The first and most Im
portant Is an Increase In the wages of the
motormen and conductora to 25 cents an
hour, and the second a minimum daily
wage of l extra ror men wno may De
called uaon to work. At the present time
the extra men are required to report at
the office for duty and are paid only for
trips made. Some of them may remain at
the barns all day, according to statemenla
of members of the union, and not take out
a traJn, and they consequently get no par
for the time they are on waiting orders.
It Is understood that when the applica
tion of the union for the approval of the
demands Is sent to the International head
quarters some of the members of the or
ganization will send a statement of the
conditions existing In Omaha to President
Mahon to acquaint him with conditions,
and auk him to be very cautious In giving
any approval which will lend color to re
ports of trouble to be coming at Omaha,
as the men who voted to ask for the In
crease In wages do not desire to carry
their demands to the point of suspending
work.
Strike Is Not Probable.
It la said by members of the union that In
case the request Is anproved by tha In
ternational officers and la refused by the
company tfiat tha matter would be allowed
to drop before any question of auspendlpg
work would be submitted to the local or
ganization. Tnere can be no strike until
two-thirds of the members of tha union
vote for such action, and this Is Impossi
ble, In the opinion of the strongest cham
pions of the new scale, as Including both
meetings at which the question waa, sub
mitted less than half the membership voted
on the question of the present application
for permission to send the request for high
er wages to the company.
By a new rule, effective August 1, the two
sections of the union will meet upon the
name day, the night men In the afternoon
and the day force In the evening. Hereto
fore the night force has met on the first
and third Wednesday afternoons and the
day force on the second and fourth
Wednesday evenings..
