Whereas, This exchange appointed a com

Whereas, The committee reported that
both of said officers were entirely unnec
essary and a needless, expense, that when
the building nctlvlty was much greater
than now the office of Assistant building In
spector did not exist, that fne office seemed
to have been created for the purpose of
furnlsnlng a salary, to a political worker;
that the office of assistant license Inspector
was crested by resolution for the year 18S8
(exposition year) and no longer; that no
such office -exists, although, appointments
have been mnde from -time to time to (111
the same; and,
Whereas. This exchange passed a resolu
tion requesting the sppolntlng power (In the
Interest of economy snd honest govern
ment), not to make appointments te the
places above referred toi-snd,-
Whereas, An ordinance was recently
passed -creating the office of second assist
ant city attorney, and an appointment la
contemplated to fill such office regardless
of the fact that the report of the retiring,
assistant city attorney showed plainly that
there was no necessity of such office and
regardless of the fact that the city attor
ney announced that he neither required or
desired the services of such second assist
ant city attorney; and,
Whereas, It has been reported In the dally
press that It la proposed to create the office
of fire coroner for Harry Bernstein, and.
Whereas, we regard the use of publlo
funds by whatever strategy, without fur
nishing an equivalent, am a dishonorable
spoliation; therefore, be It
Resolved, That we condemn the appoint
ing of an assistant building Inspector and
assistant license inspector,- and condemn
the creation of office of second assistant
city attorney, and that we protest against
the creation of the office of fire coroner or
of any other office that is not a necessity,
and.
Resolved, That we view with alarm the
unblushing audacity and the reckless dis
regard of the publlo good In making ap
pointments which necessity does not de
mand, and creating offices for which there
Is no use, end,
Resolved. That we call upon the Individ
ual taxpayers whose Interest this exchange
has attempted to gusra ana wnose nuraens

protest against ths appropriation of their
money to pav political debts and talarleg
of needless officers
W. H. Green said: "I think the resolu
tion covers ths ground. We want to ac
complish low taxes and good government.
After we have done so much for these
ends we do not want to have the council
creating these offices to pay political
debts." M. J. Kennard, Judge Lytle and
B. A. Benson also commended the resolu
tion. D. C. Patterson brought up the matter
of the Sioux City short line and alluded
to the meeting of the Commercial club
yesterday with General Manager Holdrege.
As the members of the club considered the
question of the location of the shprt Una
of the greatest Importance, on resolution
of W. H. Green, a committee consisting of
D. C. Patterson, M. J. Kennard and Judge
Lytle was appointed to look Into the mat
ter. W. G. Ure of the tax committee of the
exchange reported that "we don't know
just where we are" In the matter of se
lecting an attorney to asr,,st Mr. Wright In
the railroad tax cases. No action wag
taken.
At 1:80 o'clock twenty members of the
exchange accepted the Invitation of E. A.
Benson, and taking special trolley cars
went to Benson, where . they spent the
afternoon at lunch and cigars In tha
suburb, returning about, 4 o'clock.

the charge of obtaining money under false
pretenses was withdrawn from the police
court. Dolan was arrested Tuesday night
as he was about to leave the city for the
west brought to the police station and
Immediately released on ball. The little
misunderstanding with bis manager baa
been smoothed over, It Is given out, and
there are no hard feelings.
