IR .V . cide what to wear. It is a wise young woman who tries to scan her wardrobe with the eye of her host or hostess. If invited for the week-end at some hos pitable country or suburban home, try to recall the favorite methods adopted by the hostess for entertaining. If she has ample grounds or belongs to a country club and goes In for athletics, lay out your gowns accordingly. Take your best fitting walk lug skirt, your smartest tailored shirt waists and your most mannish cravats and Stocks. And us you vnltie that woman's friendship don't wear your l-st Mb nnd tucker on the train. A pretty girl recently went to a house party foity miles from town at tired la a dainty dotted muslin and flower crowned shepherdess hat. Phe does not un derstand why her hostess almost gasped on receiving her. Always travel In gowns that at least suggcHt the tailor's hund. If your hostess goes In for porch parties, dim corners with music, and perhaps a danre, pack up your filmiest, mmt coquet tish frocks. She will expect you to be a real summer girl, and the men in the party will probably line up in white flannels. WIIITK STUlPliU L.1UKKTY 0CAR9. Then there are tartan plaid silk shawls for those who are true to bonnie Scotland, or who love the play of brilliant colors. The Roman stripe silk shawls have a stead ily growing popularity. They come in striking color combinations, not only for shawls, but for head scarfs. Head scarfs are a great feature of sum mer wear. The Roman stripe scarfs have openwork gause mingled with the silk and are therefore as light as a thlHtledown. They are In all the pastel shades. A vivid crimson, whit-) and green one will be be coming to a brunette, while her blonde slater will do well to choose a delicate pink and blue combination. The auburn haired girl will find a sapphire blue and white scarf ready for her wearing. The scarfs ot chiffon, either printed or hand painted, are even more attractive They well deserve the old fashioned name of cloud. The scarfs and squares of lib erty silk are also filmy and eloud-like. They come both In plain colors and In stripes. A cloud of green and white lib erty silk. In broad strles, has fringed ends and will become either brunette or blonde. Among the latest scarfs are the chenille. They are soft and velvety to the touch. For those who object to ttieir apparent thickness thert is the chenille scarf Inter woven with silk braid. A pure white scarf of this variety has its ends trimmed with chenille fringe fully eight Inches In depth. If thinner head scarfs are desired there are lace ones of every oort and price. ' Malta lace Is the season's chief favorite. Indeed, white or cream laces have quite superseded the black laces in. popular for the Outing But if you are not Joining a house party, and are bound for one long delicious day out of town with the dearest chap on the face of the globe, drcas to please him, and that means, be sensible. Just remember that he wants to give you a good time him self. Neither of you will have a good time If you wear tight shoes, or a long skirt that everybody In the crowd before you, behind you and around you manages to step on. Don't Imagine that because this Is Inde pendence day you are to celebrate In your most bewitching gown. "The onllest chap" has probably seen you under the most ad vantageous circumstances, In a dainty party dress, all fluffs and flowers and furbelows. Now show him that you add to a pretty face und a fancy for dainty things, good common sense and tact. Wear comfortable walking shoes or ties. A man likes the clinging sort of girl In theory. In practice he wants her to step out briskly, and a limp is not a beautlfier. Your pklrt should clear the ground by aeverul Inches. It It be either light weight cloth or pique, or linen, or duck, but bo sure that It tits you well, hns a neat flare and rives you a generally trim ap pearance. Don't burden yourself with many petticoats The beach, the moun tain path and the boat are not the place to display lingerie. Beautiful Than Ever ':.--.r -' , .- . ...... . , rX ' " Till 11 11 i,Wi 11 11 r 1 , ; A CLOUD OF WHITE CUKNII.I.K favor. The scarfs of Malta lace havo both elegance and distinction. The silken meshes stand dampness better than the linen and cotton thread laces. If milady has an un limited purse she will have a shawl of Malta lace. The widespread use of lace has resur rected old fashioned Lace shawls. Those who rejoice In such family heirlooms be tak ing them out of old chests to wear with their most recherche toilettes. A gown of vivid silk looks doubly attractive when Veiled by a lace shawL The black Spinish lace shawls are also being worn both over the shoulders and as a head scarf. The desire to obtain long shoulder ef fects has much to do with the popularity of stoles, fichus and pelerines. They will accompany most of the dressy summer gowns. It la predicted that this fact will have further outgrowths In the form of capes, but so far it ts little more than a prophecy The stoles, fichus and pelerines are faBhloned In feathers, clilffon, lace muslin and tulle and there Is no limit to attractive ntyles. A dainty pelerine has long ends which reach to the hem of the skirt. Nothing will so emphasize a tall and slender figure. The foundation, as It were, is a Russian lace cape collar. From this depends an accordion pleated ruffle of white chiffon. It Is fully ten Inches deep and Is edged with a full niching. Above the lace collar falls a short turnover collar of white silk over a stiff foundation. It is trimmed by triple runnings of narrow black velvet ribbon, and with innumerable French knots worked in heavy white silk. The long ends on the Fourth Wear a shirtwaist that la not fussy, but neat and well laundered. Lce, chiffon and other transparent fabrics look dainty us you leave the house in the cool morning. When sea air and hot sun have done their work, such raiment outfades a faded flower trampled under foot. Dress your neck comfortably, and wear a hat that will not be on your conscience all day. Better a bargain counter sailor that defies wind and rain arid dust than your choicest conceit In tulle, (lowers and j feathers, which must be preserved as carefully as your morals and your manners. The girl who is dressed for the crush and good natured raillery of a holiday crowd is the girl who wUl help a man meet the buffetings of the world when the courtship days are done. The girl who starts on her holiday trip In white kid slippers, a dimity frock, blue ribbons and a picture hat will tangle her household accounts when the honeymoon Is past. Men are beginning to realize these little things, and many a girl Is Judged by the frock she wears on Just such days as this. There Is a time and a place for all sorts of gowns, but a holiday Jaunt is no time for Miss Flora McFhmsey to air her fine raiment. She Is the girl th-u the average man prefers Ut leave at home. ULOKIKIKS A l'KKTTY KACK. are of the clilffon edged with the accordion pleated ruffle. They cross slightly over the bust and are held in place there by a bunch of white ribbon carnations tied with many long loops and ends of black velvet. Another liundsome pelerine is also of white clilffon. A four-inch band of shirred white clilffon, edged with narrower bands of chiffon, ruching combined with narrow white velvet ribbon, circles the shoulders like a fichu. l,ong ends bang down the front to below the knee. A wide accordion pleated rullle, similarly trimmed with ruching and baby velvet, depends from the Hliouider band and ornaments both edges of the stole ends. Hosettes of white chiffon give a finish to t lie points where the peler ine is pinned to each side of the front of the bodice, to prevent its slipping from the shoulders. A pelerine of white maline has a cape collar of the maline over a white silk foundation. On this are itpplinued black lace butterflies, and It is edged with melt ings of dotted black net. From this de pends triple ruflles of the accordion pleated maline. graduated In length. Each is edged with a narrow ruffle of the dotted net The wide ends, which hang down the front to the knees, are of the accordion pleated maline. They are ornamented by alternate triple rows of black net ruffling nnd Irreg ular appliques of the black lace butterflies. Many of the tulle hats, in white or deli cate colors, have tulle stoles or pelerines to match. This is a distinctively new fea ture of the season. The parasol may also match, and the whole effect Is extremely dainty. HARRIET HAWI.EY lema lastircs Pare.Soft, White Skia and a Beantifal Complexion, earn Eczema sod Trtter.
