Trading In hwi waa again i.ull and extreme weakness prevailed through tJie ureal, r part of the sesMon. altnnugh the close was lirm. May opeiieu unchanged to a shade higher at 72ii tne t.tea. ti ne being due to the unfavorable weather conditions. The weakness In outside mar kets and a t port irom Paris showing a harp break In flour prices aoon changed the aentlment in the pit anil uinM iKCn.no artlve sellers. There wm aiao considerable! sel.lng on rhort account, with no support from any source the market quicKiy d--cllned, May selling down to 71,,c. A good export demaiid ite In the nay atarted ahorta to covering and there wan slso fulr buying by longs who had aold out earlier In the session, which letulfed In a strong upturn. The close wan unchanged at 72Va 1ic. Clesraneee of wheat and flour were equal to tSO.UH) ba. Primary recelpta were vwio bu., against a hollda? laat year. Minneapolis and Dulnth reported receipt of 21 cara. which, with local recelpta nf 19 cara, none of contract grade, made total recelpta lor Ihe three points of 232 can, agali.at 273 ast week. There wna no feature In the trading in corn and the volume of business wna hunt. While the apeculatlve conditions wer bear ish, the news was of the op)osiie character, the weather belna; unfavorable for the movement, and receipts were light. The weakners In wheat and the tar of any active demand was responsible for the de cline. The late strength In wheat Induced considerable buying by locals and the close was Mrm. with May higher at 43-c. alter selling between M 42 ic and 4.1Sc lineal receipts were 100 cars, rune of which were of contract grade. The weakness In wheat caused general selling of May oats and that delivery suf fered a break of lc, but recovered all of the loss before the dav was over. The sentiment was moderately bullish on re ports of delayed seeding and thj cash de mand was good. After selling between 32Mt32o nnd I31t&c Mny closed a shade higher at 3c Local receipts were 289 cars. Provisions ruled easier and the volume of trading was light. Th? liberal receipts of hogs and a decline In prices at the yards caused an easier tone at the start and the weakness In grains addnd to the depression. A fair demand for lard from exporters later In the day crea.ed a better fee lng. but May pc.-k closed Wc lower at 318. In Price.. NEW YORK, March 27. There appeared In the stock market today a powerful or ganized Hnd resourceful bear party. The market proved unable to withstand the aggressive tactics of this clement and some violent breaks were the result. When spec- uibiiuii 4 B 1, iiiiu iiiai 1 uiiuiiiuii ntnic 1 available resoure-es have been taken up ' Dy speculative holders or stock and the construction of money supplies begins to make their position pn-carlous, the bull party Is In the position of holding grimly to their possessions and selling out only as they nre forced to do so. Skillful calcula tion will disclose approximately a price level below the market where the efforts of thmo holders will have to be abandoned and their possessions thrown over for pur poses of realizing. Under normal clrcum siances the narrowing money supply would bilng this about by ernduul steps. It Is the part of the ambitious bear to bring It about with a rush and avail himself of the benefit of selling before the break and of buying at the decline. The sluggish and hesitating tone of the raarlt for some time and the difficulties of the money mar ket have disclosed the unpleasant position of the bulls. Th professional trading ele ment on the exchange newly recruited by the retirn of a number nf skillful specu lative leaders, demonstrated to their satis faction the state of affairs. The opejilng spurt In prlcea thin morning whs nomi nally based upon the action of the secre tary of the-treasury In resuming refunding operations,- but the professional bear party evidently had Its part In forcing the open ing bulge In prices and they sold freely from the start. The first prices of the day were almost without exception the highest. Almost Immediately the signifi cant selling in Pennsylvania made Its ap pe nance ngain. The beneficiaries by the stock subscription privileges seemed united In their desire to take their profits promptly. There was heavy selling of rights on the curb. The holders of stock, seeing the course of rights, sold their hold ings of stock on a large scale on the chance to subscribe for the new stock at a profit In the future, while having funds in hand In the meantime from the present holdings of slock. New York Central' at the same time developed a very weak tone. The rumor was prevalent that the $17,000,000 of stock In the company's treasury, which Is airenay autnorixea, win He shortly offered for subscription. The selling of stock was alleged to be against this fjture issue of treasury stock. The prevailing sentiment on the subject of additional stock issues waa shown by the special weakness of all stocks which have a possible new issue ahead of them. St. Paul was a conspicu ous example. This formed the principal basis for the bear raid upon the market, which changed the early gains eif 1 to IV 11110 sucn nei losses ior me aay as 01. Paul 64. New York Central ex-dlvldend. Pennsylvania and Southern Pacific about 8 and a long list of losses between 1 and 2. in tne inactive list there were even wider decline. The prospect of a further loss of over $2,000,000 In cash by the banks aggra vated the weakness. On - the curb there was a break of 24 point in Northern Se curities. The hasty taking of profits by the iea.ra uiumki raiut?s at ine laac, put tne market closed In a very feverish and un settled state. Expert estimates a to the effect of the proposed refunding operation did not promise a large release of cash to the money market aa a result. Th In. creased possibility for note issues was taken little count of In the stock market view of the measure. . Bonds became heavy in sympathy with stocks. Total sales, par value. $2.210,OuO. Trading waa quite brlsa from atart to. tlnish and everything waa sold at an early hour except, of course, the late Ar rivals. There were quite a few beef steers in cluded In the offerings, and buyers took hold freely end the market could safely ba quoted about a dime higher than yesWrday. Aa compared with a wee ago prices are about 10fel6c lower. The bulk of the cattle yesterdsy sold right around close to 26c lower than the close of last week, and the bulk of the cattle received hers since Monday have also so.d very nearly 16326c lower than last week. The cow market was quite active and fully steady so fsr as the better grades are concerned. Thete has been considerable unevenness to the trade for the laat several days, but as compared with a week ago there Is not much change, except on tne cannera and cutters, fanners have been badly neglected all the week, snd are 1525c lower. gutters have also suffered, but not quite as much ss the canners. Bulls veal calves snd stags all sold In just about tho same notches they did yes terday. . . . Thers were only a few stockers and feed ers on hand this morning, and as Is gen erally the case on a Friday the market w,a rather slow snd buyers shaded prices a little. The maraet opened rather slow, aa packera did not want to advance prices, but sellers held on and the most of the esrly sales were right around a nickel higher than yester day's average, t Ix.ngh some sales were, perhaps, not over 2Sc higher. I.ater In the morning It became evident that there were hardly enough hogs on sale to fill pAckers oraers. and as a result the close wss more active and stronger, some sales going at an advance of 6tfloc. Practically everything repor.ed arrived In good season today, so thst the market came to an early close. The bulk of Ihe hogs with any weight to them aold from 87.2o to 37.30. and prime heavyweights Sold from 37.30 to 17.40. The light loads so:d from 87.26 down. Today's advance a little more than makes up for the lort of the last two days, but as compared with the close of last week the market Is still frjjioc lower. Representative sales: It.. No. Av. gh. The market showed no quotable change from yesterdav and practically everything waa out of first hands In goo I reason. Some ewes and wethers, mixed, about half and half, sold as hleh at 3.oo, which waa considered a fully steady price. As compared with the close of lat week, the better grades of both sheep and iambi are f nil v steady, while the half-fat kinds are all the way from 10c to 25c lower.
