Tim OMAHA PAIIYY TMTFa TUESDAY, jMAKCII 17, 1903. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL All Commoditiai Tumble on Chicago Board of Trade. MAY CORN BREAKS OVER TWO CENTS Other ftralns Butler la Sympathy. While Provisions Are Alio Af fected In ("pile of Otherwise Favorable Conditions. CHICAGO, Marrh lti. There wbb a break Of over 2 renin In March corn today, due. to heavy liquidation hy pruinlnent holders and the' rlrs- was down lc. May wheat whs (.fT c and oats cr; Vt lower. Provisions were easier and the May pro ducts closed from i'Vc to Uc lower. TradlnB In wheat was only moderate and the mantel held fairly steady the greater fiart of the day, but the extreme weakness n corn caused a decline late In the session and the close was near the bottom. May opened a shade to 4c higher, at i44c to 74'.4!U 74Hc. on comparatively steady cables' the markets at IJverpool tailing to respond to the decline here, and on small world s shipments, the decrease being largely from Kurla and Argentine. There waa general selling by commission houses, but the of ferings were well taaen by pit traders, and local longs, and the price remained s;emly until the session was well advanced, when a reversion of sentiment developed on the break In corn and a decline to 7i)c fol lowed. The close was lower at i3V 73",c. Clearance!, of wheat and flour were eoiiHl to 336..0 bu. 1-rlmnry receipts were 797,fJ bushels, against 631,000 bushela a year ago. The amount on paasaije de creased 1 672,000 bushels, and the visible sup ply showed a decrease of 091.000 bushels. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of So curs which with local rt;vlpts of 1!7 cars, none' of contract grnde, made total receipts for the three points of tio ears, against 568 cars lust week, and 579 cars a year ago. Enormous liquidation of May corn re sulted In a breuk of 2c In that commodity and with poor support the market closed near the bottom. The selling was a con tinuance of the liquidation begun lust week and was on a scale sufficient to sat isfy the most Incredulous that the bull campaign Inaugurated reveral weeks ago had been abandoned. The selling was In big blocks and at llrst wu muinly con fined to one or two large operators, but as the session advanced and no letup oc curred the smaller holders took alarm and Joined In the selling movement, ao that for a time It seemed aa If the whole pit had corn for sale. The opening was easy on lower cables, May being a shade lower, at 4t;'fi t67c, and from the tup of the bell until lnte In the day the market experienced a gradual decline. At 4c there was some covering by shorts and a slight reaction occurred, the close t?lng off lc, at 43c. Statistics on the whole were bull ish, but hnd little effect on the situation. Ixcal receipts were 3tB cars, with one of contract grade There was early selling of oats on the Increased receipts but the offerings were well taken and the market held quite Heady until late In the session, when prices declined with corn. The volume of trade waa only moderate. The cloBe was weak and H4c lower for May. at 54'4c, after Belling between 84c and 34-ic. Local re ceipts were 413 cars. There was considerable liquidation In provisions Induced chiefly by the weak ness In corn, although liberal receipts of bogs and a decline of from 6c to 10c In prices at ihe yards were early uear factors. There wus no effort to support the market and the whole list slumped off. the closs being weak and 25c off. May pork at $18.4iVi; May lard down 17Vc at $195, and ribs were 7Vsc lower at I8.87H. Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, 20 cars; corn. 375 cars; oats, 220 cara; hops. 24.000 head. The leading futures ranged aa follows: Artlcles.l Open. I High. Low. Clcse. Safy. Stocks Slump 'When Brokers Find Money Tighter Than Anticipated. NEW YORK. March 16-The feeling of encouragement professed on Saturday over the money situation as indicated by the bank statement was dissipated today. When cull money rose to 7 per cent the dis couraged bulls began to throw over stocks and there was evidence of considerable liquidation by tired holders. Prices went down easily and there was no appearance of effective support until there came a sudden spurt in Southern Pacific, during the last half hour. The marking up of this stock to 63 was so characteristic of the drastic speculative motive of the manager of the pool in Southern Pacific that the shorts took fright and covered hastily In various parts of the market. Union Pacific shared in the late rally as Southern Pacific had done In the early weakness. There was a manifest embarrassment in the sup posed efforts, which were making all day to depress Union Pacific and support South ern Pacific. Speculators assumed this pur pose on the part of the pool in connection with its suit to prevent the diversion of Southern Pacific earnings away from di version The possible incidental conse quences of this suit are an unsettling In fluence on the speculation, on account of the important questions that may arise re garding the control of competing lines by ownership of stocks held In the treasury of a railroad corporation. The progress of the voting on the strike question on the part of the employes of the New Haven system served to keep alive the labor ques tion in the mind of the speculative public. The progress of the spring season gives constantly new occasion for the considera tion of this subject by reason of new de mands for higher wages and disputes grow ing out of them. This is a wide reaching influence for depression In the present temper of speculation. The proposition for New Y'ork to provide Its own street light ing plant caused further sharp losses in the local gas stocks. The selling pressure seemed particularly severe against New York Central, for what reason was not dis closed. A decline of 11 points In New York, Chicago & St. I-ools preferred from the preceding marked the continued ntmcuny of finding a market for dormant securities. It was hoped that the success of the banks last week in keeping within their legal reserve requirement would lead to quieter money conditions this week. The absence of violent disturbance In stocks last week In spite of the $16,000,000 loan contraction effected seemed to be regarded as en couraging. There was a momentary ef fort, in fact to pull up prices and some progress was made In the case of Reading, Wabash preferred, Louisville and a few other stocks. The disbursement of the Standard Oil dividend today seemed to be without effect in relieving the monty market. London sold stock here and sterl ing exchange advanced, both of which were factors In the weakness of the mar ket The fact that the week starts with a weak gain for the banks on sub-treasury operations affected but mild specula tion. The market was coincident with the arrival at this office of a leading Indiv idual In the financial world after a vacation absence, although the motive which prompted the professionals to pursue this course was not disclosed. The bond market was weak In sympathy with stocks. Total sales, par value, $1, 875 000. United States new 4s. registered, advanced per cent on the last call. 'rYadlng was not particularly brisk, but at the same lime a fairly early clearance waa made. The quality of the beef steers on aale was about the same as of late, and the market could be quoted generally steady. Buyers though, aid not take hold with much life, and some salesmen thought they had a hard time to get fully as good prices as they received last week. As a general thing, though, there was no quotable change In the market. Cows also sold In about the same notches they did last Friday. The better grades, such as sell from $3.50 up, seemed to be in the best demand, and lor such kinds It was an easy matter to get fully steady prices. When it came to the fair to me dium kinds and also the canners, the mar ket was not very brisk and should be quoted barely steady. In fact, tome sales men were calling tne market a shade lower on all but the best kinds. Bulls, veal calves end stags sold at just about steady prices with the close of last week. The stocker and feeder market was not hsavlly supplied, uid as speculators are looking for a good demand Horn the coun try this week they took nold quite freely and bought up everything at ail desirable at steady to strong prices. A good many snortiea cattia again sola to feeder buyers. Tha market opened 5'jlOc lower, but as the morning advanced the market seemed to weaken and the close was very slow and fully 10c ,ower than the close of last week. Trading was not very active, as sellers did not like to take off that much. Several trains were lute In arriving, which also helped to delav thi market. The bulk of the medium weight hogs old from 17.15 to 17.20, good weight hKS from ll.zo to 17.25 and as high as Si. 31 was paid for prime heavies. The lUht stuff was neglected, the same as usual, and sold from t. lo down. Representative saies: No, 44.. 88. . 74.. 70.. 72.. 92.. Some sales, n fact, were a big dime higher and the highest prices of the season were paid. Western yearlings sold at $6.35, the top price of the season: wether brought P ib and ewes topped the market at $5.35. Everything at all desirable sold In good season, but some common stuff did not seem to be in quite as good demand, but till-even that class of stuff was lully steady with last week. There were not many lambs on aale and good lambs In particular were scarce. There were some on sale, however, good enough to bring $6.62. which was con sidered a fully steady price.
