GO LOWER ; ' .Wheat I IP FrovUloaa Easter, Mar Pork and Lard aail Itlba Falling Fear Cents on Day. CHICAGO, Jnn. 16. Trading was active gain In the grain pita today ami wlictt .ruled strong, May closing c higlH-r. May corn u V4C lower and oats were lower. 1'iovlslons were easier, May pork closing lie lower, while May lard was off tVtji'.sc and rihs down 5c. There waa an active trade In wheat and the market at times exhibited considerable excitement. In spile of heavy liquidation by locala and outsiders prices maintained . higher level, although there waa a slight decline early on general selling, brought n by the rumor that the leading long was unloading hla enormous holdings. Instead if disposing of any long stuff, however, the leader of the bulls added still further to his Jon line, which fact was mainly respon sible for the strength In the situation. May Speiied UVtc to VcfVic. higher at Wq'v, but sold off to 77'ic easily, only to rally (-gain to "(yaTSVuC. Renewed selling caused another decline to 7i',sc, but a good export (demand resulted In a late bulge, and the Iclose was near the top, with May V higher at 78V Hc. The early strength was on higher cables and reports of unfavorable weather in Argentine. Exports of wheat and flour for the week, according to Urad ieitreet's, were 4.879.ls0 buehels, against t.Sao. lODO bushels last year. Clearances of wheat (and flour were equal to XU.auu bushels. I'ri 'mary receipts were 570.3(h) bushels, against I4SW.3O0 a year ago. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of 3N8 earn, which wltn ' local receipts of 34 cars, made total re ceipts for the three points 422 cars, against 314 cars last week and 4MI cars a year at;o. 1'here was heavy realizing In corn .throughout the day, and the market gen erally was weaker, with the January op tion especially weak, although covering by ahortd and a fair export demand brought out a rally late In the day and part of the early losa waa regained. January opened unchanged to Mic higher at 4XV414c. but heavy selling caused a decided increase In the cash offerings from the country, result ing In a break to 4H'c, but a firmer tone developed later, the close being l'sc lower at 47'ic May ranged between 44c and 44-Sc and closed ic lower at 44vii44V. Cables were easier and Argentine advicee very bullish, a large crop being predicted. Local receipts were small, 2S1 cars, with only 1 of contract grade. Following a strong opening the oats mar ket developed considerable weakness under enormous realizing sales by commission houses and local longs. Cash houses were also large sellers, the Increased offering from the country being an Incentive. On the close there was a rirmness, with part of the loss regained. May. was Vfcc lower at 38V;, after selling berween 3iic and &c. loeal receipts were 192 cars. Provisions were dull and the market wag weaker, due to profit-taking botn on local and outside account. The opening was ilrm on a strong hog market, and the etrength !n grains. May pork closed 16c lower at 116.4214. May lard was off 6W7Hc at 9.504J!9.&2to. while rlba were 6c lower at p 06. Backing and filling was the favorite term to express the condi tion of today's stock market, which re flected the same state of bewilderment that has been evident In the speculative mind for several days past. The trade was la.er quite apathetic. The few stocks which developed a show of strength had very little sympathetic effect upon the list In general and their gains wero but poorly held. The most prominent of these waa Missouri Pacific, which seemed to be effected by prevailing gossip that the great "Missouri ' project was to be announced at an early date. Reading was advanced, and Southern Rail way, Atchison, Sugar and a few less con spicuous stocks had the'r period of strength. Although the earlier events of the week were considered to demonstrate that trior J was no Immediate prospect of attracting public Interest to the market, the profes sionals show themselves exceedingly wary of venturing to go Bhurt of the market. Covering of some of the short lines put out early was a factor in holding prices firm In today's exceedingly dull market. The mystery attaching to Erie served to Intimidate the bears. The enormous volume of dealings In this stuck at the higher levels was believed to point to manipula tion and realizing. But its firmness since the continued rumors regarding It point to some development going on. The apparent pulley to pair out the anthracite coal prop erties among the great trunk line powerr, aa in the case of Reading, would point tu some plan regarding Erie. There is faith In the rumor regarding Wabash tr Rock Island or both to secure an Atlantic outlet for the ErUs. J. P. Morgan's testimony yesterday Into the Louisville transfer was seen to express an adverse opinion against tne buying up of railroads over night and to show a par tiality for the extension of voting trusts for the insurance of control. But Mr. Morgan has demonstrated In the caae of the Northern Pacific that he will adopt ex treme measurea to prevent the wresting of control from him of a property of the over night class of purchasers. If the recent vlgility In Erie represented a contest in the sudden passage or control irom me 001111 nant Morgan Interest or whether In the j progress of parcelling out the property aR in the case of as in tne case ot neaoing are iwu yoetuuiu contingencies that present themselves to the conjectures of Wall street. There is every probability of a strong bank statement-tomorrow, as the yield to the banks on sub-treasury operations of $3,otil,uou haa been supplemented by cur rency from the Interior estimated at 35.uuO.0OO or over. ' The strength of St. Paul and of Chicago Great Western seemed to be due to rumors that the former had acquired control ot the att"r- ,, . The bond market was generally firm, but with some issues slightly lower. Total ales, nar value. 19.165.000. Money was in strong demand In the market today and there were renewed borrowings from the Bank of England, estimated to amount to 115.000. 000. DiEcounts were maintained. Business on the Stock exchange was quiet and prices were fairly steady, the bank return betmr a helpful factor. There was some talk of an early reduction of the Bank of Eng land's rate of discount. Consols were easier, owing to the scarcity of money and the expectation that the Issuing of the Transvaal loan will cause further sales of these securities. Home rails sympathized with the consols. Americana were de pressed and uncertain. There waa little Interest manifested In them. They hard ened slightly and closed dull. Kaffirs were unsettled. PARIS, Jan. 16. Prices on the bourse today opened Arm. Turks were lively In demand. letter stocks became weaker. Rentes were extensively offered and the whole list suffered on realizations. Rentes were again offered later, owing to a rumor mat a bill for an Income tax will shortly be laid before the Chamber. At the close re.ites were easier and money eaay. French rails reacted. Industrials weak. Rio tin tos were firmer as a result of the rise In the nrlce of copper. Packers, thougn, took hoid in good snape, and the market ruled active from start to finish, everything being disposed ot in good sea son. The quality of the cornfed steers on sale was poorer than on any provision day this week, and In fact there was nothing ot tered that could be called good. The mar ket, though, could be quoted generally about steady, although buyers were not particularly anxious tor the kinds that were ottered. The cow market was quite brisk and the prices paid were a little stronger than yesterday. The demand seemed to be ac tive for canners and cutters, as well as' for the better grades, and the cattle began moving toward the scales at an early huur. The big bulk of the receipts consisted of cow stuff, but tne supply was none too large to meet the demand and the pens were cleared In good season. Bulls, veal caivea and stags were all easy to dispose of at yesterday's prices. There waa not much change In the stocker and feeder situation, bupplles were very light and so also waa the demand. As noted yesterday, country buyers are all looking tor the cattle of good quality, ao that the Inferior grades are almost un salable. The market yesterday took a big drop on the common kinds, and the few that arrived today were again extremely slow sale at still lower prices, nepreseuia- tive sales: ., No. At. The bulk of the medium weight hops sold from $ti.4." to $6.65 and choice heavy hogs sold mostly from $S6o to $8.65. The light weights went from $6.46 down. Trading was not very brisk owing to the fact that buy ers were a little slow about bidding the full ntrength of the market, but as supplies were limited It did not take long for the bulk of the offerings to change hands. There was practically no quotable change In the market from start to finish, the last hogs selling on about the same basis as the early onea. Representative sales: No. 91... NEW YORK, Jan. 16. COTTON Opened at an advance of 2rn4 points and was fairly active, largely on general public demand while the more professional class of trad ers were disposed to take .profits on long cotton or loses for short account on a belief that while the statistical position remained me of remarkable strength It had been over discounted in the more than lc ad vance which has occurred here since No vember 14, when May cotton sold at 7.67c, TVlth that position today reaching 8 90c. At the strongest Interval today's market show ed an advance of timid points, after which there was n weaker period under the heavy sales to secure prolits, with the marki-t film My steady at a net loss ot 1 point to a net gain of 1 point. Total sales were about 360.000 bales for th day. Helling for short account was arrested by the strotiR week-end figures shown In this country and abroad, the Liverpool stocks being i'Sl.iMvi short of Inst year's wlfh the amount afoul 74.000 short of the present year, while 8uier Intc ndent King made the amount of cotton brought In sight lor the week and Ih amount for the season less than last year's, the weekly contrast being 808,630. against 325.372, and for the season 7,501, US, against 7 520.9uti. Selling was also held In check bv strong reports front the tpot cotton markets of the country, the rang" showing un advance of from l-ltc to 3 l-16c. in tho afternoon, however, the disposition to se cure profits In speculative accounts over balanced all other considerations and the market closed rather weak.
