WHEAT RULES EXTREMELY FIRM ALL DAY Clear, Cold Wthrr Force Com t ad Other Cereals Carry Onls with Them, While Inrrrnfd Hoc Re ceipts Elevate Provisions. CHICAGO, Dec. .-Vhet was strong throughout the entire session today, not wlthstandlng a rather quiet, and at times, a dull market, the clone being strong, with May up H'tC'Vc. May corn closed V(4o higher, with oats 4c better. January pro vision) cloned trom 24c to loc higher. Statistics In general were bullish and wheat ruled extremely firm all ilay. The lack of any material trading wan tlie means of preventing any great advance resulting from the higher cables, decreased receipts, bullish Argentine advices and a small In crease In the visible eupply, when a largo one had been anticipated. The markets In the northwest were strong, adding to the strength of the situation, while a decrease of from lo,0O0.(JO to 15,000,000 bushels In the official estimate of the crop ot Manitoba from the private estimate previously given also aided In boosting the market. The close was strong and near the top on May, the final figures being VtfVc higher at 7o'4 t;6c, after opening unchanged to 4c higher at 76V0i&c, and advancing steadily to 76c. 1 he world s shipments for the week were 8,844,000 bushels, compared with 8.497, 000 bushels a year ago. The visible supply tor the week showed an Increase of only fcoS.OOO bushels and clearance of waea't and Hour were equal to 412,ooo bushels, Primary j-ecelpts were 1,459,500 tunnels, against 1,616, 700 bushels a year ago. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of 1,176 cars, which with local receipts of 88 cars, 1 of contract grade, made total recelpta for tlie three points of 1,264 cars, against 1,697 cars last week and 98 a year ago. There waa considerable strength In corn, due to higher cables and clear, cold weather throughout tha west. Prominent commis sion houses bought freely of May, but the offerings were rather limited, the fears of manipulation causing the local traders to hold back. There were no special features In the Hading and the volume of business on the whole was close. The close was strong and at the top. May closing VuMic higher at 4WiC, after selling between 4344 4,i4c and 43, c. Local receipts were 122 curs, with 7 of contract grade. Strength In other grains and a continued good cash demand caused oats to rule strong throughout the session and there was a fair amount of business transacted, commission houses taking on quite freely of May. The increased receipts were a bear factor and caused some selling, but the offerings were readily taken. May closed '4c higher at 33c, alter ranging be tween kj(a3J4o and 83c. Local receipts were 336 cars. provisions were offered freely at the open ing on the Increased hog receipts and the lower prices at the yards) and an easier tone prevailed early. Later a good demand for lard developed and with the strength in grains a firmer feeling was manifested, the close being firm, with January pork 5o higher at $18.3ii. Lard was up 84e nt89.7iV4. while ribs were 10c higher at $8.3B.37tt. C 1 CATTLE There was a liberal run of cat tie reported this morning, butia good many of tne trains were late In arriving, so that the morning was well advanced before much business was transacted. With the exception of cornteds the cattle changed hanos quite freely as fast as they arrived at just aoout steady prices with the close of last week. There was a liberal sprinkling of corn cattle in the yards ano as Chicago was quoted 10&-uc lower packers here were nat urally ratner bearish. It was evident, how ever, that they wanted the cattle, so tnat while some saies were fully loc lower others did not look much if any lower. It was rather an uneven market, with packers bearish on the good as well as on the com mon stuff, bo mar.y of the trains were late in arriving that the market was slow. Packers all ieeraed to have quite liberal orders for cows, so that ajl kinds sold freely at good steady prices. Buyers wanted the medium grades and tanners as well as the better grades and there was very little change from the fclose of last week In the prices paid. Bulls, veal calves and stags also sold without material change. There waa not a very heavy supply of Btockers and feeders and the market could safely be quoted steady on anything de cent. Speculators carried very few cattle over Sunday and as a result they all wanted a few tnis morning, ine oemanu, though, was limited largely to the better grauea, with the common stuff slow sale at any price, the same as has been the case tor some time past. There were a few bunches of western grass steers offered that were good enough tor killers and packers seemed to be quite anxlojs for them and paid good steady prices. Range cows also sola freely at last week s quotations and the same was true of anytning desirable in the way of range stockers and teedera. Representative -sales: B.k.lf urt-LKS. Av. Pr. NEW YORK, Dec. 8 COTTON After opening steady at unchanged prices, ran to an advance of 8 points, sold off a point and then rallied sharply on small transactions and closed very steady at a nft rise of 8 to 10 points, this being the highest price of the session. The advance wan due largely to disappointing receipts, with forecasts as to the movement in the near future also small; Januurv sold up from 8.18c to 8.27c; March, 8.10!ha.i9c; May, 8.12-i8.20c; July, 8.11 4i8.23c. The buying was in good part for New Orleans account, although a certain Wull street Interest probably Initiated the upward movement, which waa accelerated by covering of short accounts. Th move ment of cotton Is still said to be delayed by bad weather and a car scarcity, al though the weather is changing for the better and the freight commissioners of the New York Cotton exchange, recently returned from an investigation In the south on the car scarcity rubject, stated that within a few weeks the car service In the cotton belt has been Increased to the ex tent of 1.7o0 cars and that the more Impor tant railroads have expressed the intention to give preference to cotton to the fullest fiosslble extent. HOGS There wss a heavy Monday's run of hogs here today and as other markets were quoted lower prices here took a drop amounting to Just nbout a dime. Thp bulk of the sales wartt from 86.06 to $6.10 ami ns high as 86 15 was paid for a medium weight load of good quality. Trading was very slow on the start and In fact was not par ticularly active at any time, a is sellers did not like the Idea of taxing off a dime. The bulk of the sales, though, were made In fairly good season, but several trains were late In arriving. Today's decline wipes out all of the gain of last week and more too, so that the average cost today Is a shade lower than a week ago.
